Prescribed-fire operations in the Strawberry project area, which began on May 26, 2023, were suspended at the end of June as weather conditions became unfavorable. Nearly 4,200 acres were treated with prescribed fire in the Strawberry, Dry Meadow, South Fork, and Experimental Forest project areas. Crews also prepared more than 5,000 acres in the North Beardsley project area for prescribed-fire treatment. Stanislaus National Forest fire managers anticipate being able to resume firing operations on the remaining untreated units this fall, most likely from mid-October to mid-November.
Stanislaus National Forest employees thank residents and visitors for their patience and support as they use prescribed fire and other treatment methods to reduce wildfire risk to communities, protect infrastructure, and improve forest health.
