Suppression repair work is still the focus for fire crews. This includes excavator operations repairing fire lines, which are wrapping up on the Beachie Creek fire. There is still chipping being done along the 46 road for the Lionshead fire. Crews are making progress towards Brietenbush, but the road is still closed for the safety of workers and drivers.

There have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at the Beachie Creek incident command post and personnel are still maintaining COVID protocols. These protocols include the 3 W’s: washing hands, wearing masks, and watching for 6-feet distancing.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Weather remains cool and mostly cloudy with a 10% chance of rain today. A weak cool front will present drier conditions with humidity levels around 60-70%. The weather today will be mostly dry and cloudy, with temperatures ranging from 58-63°F. There will be a mild western wind. Fire behavior continues to remain minimal.

With minimal fire behavior, there are still safety concerns. Newly opened, unpaved roads are muddy and susceptible to rock falls due to erosion from the fire event and winds. Burn areas remain closed due to ash pits that can continue to smolder long after the wildfire event, in addition to falling trees that can cause serious injury and death. General Information: Our fire crews are still focused on suppression repair, which includes repair work on dozer line with an excavator to rehabilitate the landscape. Additionally, crews are removing hazard trees and addressing erosion in recreation areas.

The Burned Area Emergency Response team (BAER) has concluded their work. BAER teams are typically dispatched to large fires after a halt in growth, but before suppression is completed to assess the habitats and landscape. The tasks include assessing soil burn severity, detecting the effects on the habits of sensitive species, identifying impacts to structures and recreation areas, and marking hazmat areas. 

State Highway 22 is still allowing vehicles through without road barricades. The speed limit remains 40 mph between Gates and Pamelia Creek to maintain safety for drivers and workers along the roadside where tree removal is occurring. Expect delays and remain cautious in these areas.

On the Lionshead fire, there is chipping being done along the 46 road. So far, 4 miles have been completed and crews are progressing towards Breitenbush. Drivers should remain aware that the road is still closed for their safety, as well as the safety of the crews.

There will be an increase in wind early afternoon heading southwest. Temperatures will range from 59-64°F. Fire behavior will remain minimal for the foreseeable future.

Closures are still in place for public and fire crew safety. There are still hazards within burn areas, including ash pits that can retain hot embers that smolder for extended periods after the wildfire event. Additionally, snags and green trees continue to fall throughout the fire area. Even small trees and limbs can cause serious injury and death.

General Information: Yesterday evening, the Southern Cascades Type 3 Interagency Management Team assumed operational control of areas of the Lionshead Fire that impacted Willamette National Forest lands. Several fire crews previously stationed at the Lionshead incident command post have moved to the Beachie Creek incident command post in Salem, resulting in an increase of personnel.

Local fire crews are working with local recreation staff to address hazards around hiking trails inside and outside of the burn area, as well as those directly impacted by the wind event in September. This includes removal of hazard trees and erosion mitigation.

Fire managers and resource advisors are continuing to scout for opportunities to repair fire line and mitigate the effects of fire suppression on the landscape.

The speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph between Gates to Pamelia Creek road and frequent delays are expected.

There is a slight chance of rain mainly impacting higher elevations. There will be a higher chance of rain on Sunday, as well as an increase in wind. Fire behavior will remain minimal.

Even with decreased fire behavior, there are many hazards that exist in burn areas, such as ash pits that can contain hot embers that continue to smolder weeks or months after the wildfire event. General Information: Fire managers with the Type 3 Incident Management Team are continuing to scout contingency line for opportunities to repair and mitigate the effects of fire suppression on the landscape. In addition to repairing fire lines, crews will be hard at work again today removing hazard trees, mitigating erosion, patrolling and mopping-up lingering hotspots.

Now that active suppression is no longer essential to the containment effort, many crews and resources have been released from the fire to work on incidents that have staffing and resource needs. Daily objectives are also being adjusted to reflect the shorter daylight hours in which crews can work.   

State Highway 22 is open for all vehicle traffic. Crews with heavy equipment are still working along the highway to remove damaged trees and will be for some time. The speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph between Gates to Pamelia Creek road and frequent delays are expected. Traffic is likely to increase over the weekend.

All evacuations levels have been lifted for Marion and Linn counties.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Today temperatures will range from 55-65 degrees in the fire area and be slightly cooler above 4,000 feet. Winds will be light and flow to the northwest. There will be a slight chance of showers tonight and into tomorrow morning.

Even after a season-ending rain event, which brings enough precipitation to wet exposed fuels so thoroughly they are unlikely to burn, fire can remain underground for weeks and even months. Much like banking a fire in a fireplace or woodstove, hot coals can continue smoldering deep within the stumps and root systems without emitting smoke for long periods of time. The warmer temperatures over the next few days should not increase fire behavior.
