Publication Type: Closures
Prather, CA., October 01, 2020 – The Sierra National Forest (SNF) High Sierra Ranger District and Fresno County Sheriff’s Office will allow individuals to enter temporarily to collect belongings left behind when evacuated (tents, trailers, boats and gear), and close cabins for the winter.
Due to an overwhelming response the decision has been made to add another weekend to allow individuals affected by the Creek Fire the opportunity to take care of these tasks. Individuals can choose to either enter the weekend of the 3rd & 4th or 10th & 11th, allowing time for plans to be made.
Each day a there will be a set period of time beginning October 3rd & 4th, and again on October 10th & 11th, 2020 allowing those affected by evacuations, and recreational residences to clean out refrigerators, winterize cabins, then move back off the forest.
The SNF will allow roadblock access each of the two days from 7am - 1pm, If individuals arrive after 1pm access will not be permitted. The check-in for these days will be staged at each of the roadblock access points to areas where entry is to be made for that day.

CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Weather Information:
The hot and dry pattern continues as the high pressure system remains in place. Today’s temperatures are expected to be similar to yesterdays, 10 to 15 degrees above the seasonal average. Humidity remains low with minimal recovery overnight. Light terrain driven diurnal winds (upslope during the day and downslope at night) from the southwest will also continue through today.
The hotter/drier weather conditions combined with dry/receptive fuels have the potential for flare ups and upslope runs in unburned green islands within the fire interior along with short range spotting.
Fresno County: SOUTH ZONE
The Sierra National Forest will allow individuals who were evacuated from campgrounds, camping areas and cabins during the Creek Fire an opportunity to return and collect their belongings on October 3rd and 4th. Please follow this link for more information regarding the procedures and processes to gain access. Permit Holder Access/Recreation Residence
A relatively static weather pattern will again support drought stressed fuels contributing to active fire behavior in all size classes. Anticipate containment challenges associated with steep terrain and increased wind speeds along the exposed higher elevations of the fire.
Operationally, the Incident Command Post at Sierra High School has been relocated to the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building at 808 4th Street. With this move, public information will continue in place at Sierra High School, available to meet the needs of our community and media partners.
Madera County: NORTH ZONE
Active burning of surface fuels within the Ansel Adams Wilderness (north side of the fire) continues, but is confined by natural barriers. In the northwest corner fire fighters continue to secure the edge, mopping up and increasing containment line depth. East of Central Camp and south of Little Shuteye Peak is expected to transition into patrol status within the next couple of days. Crews have begun “back hauling” (removing fire hose from the containment lines) south of Whiskey Falls as these areas enter patrol status. Helicopters flew throughout the day yesterday supporting fire operations.
Removal of hazardous standing dead trees continued along primary roads, and began along secondary roads within and adjacent to the fire area yesterday. The structure protection group continues to assess conditions throughout the fire area.
The fire is still 10-12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes, little forward progression is occurring due to the natural barriers of rock and the Lions Fire (2018) burn scar. Conditions continue to be monitored very closely. Additional information is available via the Sierra National Forest Facebook page, or the following link:
https://creek-fire-preparednessmonomammoth.hub.arcgis.com
Cattle in and around the fire area are being rounded up and moved. Be aware of cattle, those working with them, fire personnel and other hazardous conditions when returning to the fire impacted area once it re-opens.
Please respect the Temporary Flight Restriction. The use of drones is not permitted over the fire area. A drone incursion will result in the grounding of all firefighting aircraft. Remember, "If you fly - We can't."

Madera County: NORTH ZONE
The fire continues to be active in the north, within the Ansel Adams Wilderness, but is confined by natural barriers. On the northwestern edge crews completed a successful backfiring operation connecting and filling in the containment line yesterday. Fire fighters continue to secure this edge, mopping up and increase the containment line depth. East of Central Camp and south of Little Shuteye Peak continues to be monitored, the fire is still hung up in the rocks in the same location as it has been for the last 11 days. South of this area has seen minimal fire activity for the last few days and has entered the patrol and monitoring phase. Helicopters were unable to fly yesterday due to the heavy smoke.
Removal of hazardous standing dead trees continues along the primary roads within and adjacent to the fire area supporting safe access into the fire area. CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Weather Information:
The hot and dry pattern continues, with temperatures well above normal and more typical for late August, about 10 degrees above average highs and 10 to 15 degrees above average low temperatures. Lower humidity and terrain driven winds (gusts of 14 to 18 mph and 20 to 25 mph on ridge tops) primarily from the south and southwest are also expected to continue over the next several days. These conditions combined with dry fuels across the fire area will allow for flare ups and some spotting, short distances, where conditions align.
Fresno County: SOUTH ZONE
Continuing hot and dry weather conditions are allowing for increased fire activity on the eastern portion of the fire near the 80 Road and Potter Pass. Sparser fuels and a changing fuel type (red fir and lodgepole pine) is expected to slow fire progression.
Fire fighters continue to patrol and enhance containment lines. Crews are mopping up and increasing the depth of the established fire line and treating hot spots. As a precaution, structure defense also continues in several areas within and near the southern and eastern edges. Hand crews are working in areas where dozer access is limited due to steep terrain, and helicopter support is also helping to treat hot spots and flare ups.
Operationally, the Incident Command Post at Sierra High School is relocating to the Veterans Memorial Building in Clovis, located at 808 4th Street. Public information will now be working from both Sierra High School and the Memorial Building. Please see the phone numbers listed above, media contact information has changed.
Madera County: NORTH ZONE
The hotter/drier weather conditions combined with dry/receptive fuels have the potential for flare ups and upslope runs along with short range spotting. The fire was more active in the north/northeast yesterday, within the Ansel Adams Wilderness, but confined by natural barriers. On the northwestern edge crews worked to put out hot spots and are planning a small backfiring operation to connect and fill in the containment line today. East of Central Camp and south of Little Shuteye Peak continues to be monitored, the fire is still hung up in the rocks in the same location as it has been for the last 10 days. Firefighters continued to mop up, widen the containment line and patrol the Central Camp, Whiskey Falls and southwestern corner of the fire. Helicopters were able to fly yesterday and support several areas around the fire with bucket drops.
Removal of hazardous standing dead trees continues along the primary roads within and adjacent to the fire area including the 81 and 274 Roads and Beasor Road. The structure protection group continues to work throughout the fire area including in the Johnson and Arnold Meadow areas.
The fire is still 10-12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes, no forward progression is occurring due to the natural barriers of rock and the Lions Fire (2018) burn scar which help to limit fire spread on the north-eastern flank. Conditions continue to be monitored very closely by emergency officials. Additional information is available via the Sierra National Forest Facebook page, or the below link: https://creek-fire-preparednessmonomammoth.hub.arcgis.com

Weather Information:
Above average temperatures, lower humidity and light terrain driven winds primarily from the south and southwest are expected to continue over the next several days. These conditions combined with dry fuels across the fire area will allow for flare ups and some spotting, short distances, where conditions align.
Fresno County: SOUTH ZONE
With the change in weather conditions, yesterday saw more active fire behavior on the eastern portion of the fire near the 80 Road and Potter Pass. The goal is to keep the fire north of Kaiser Pass. As the fire moves into the Ansel Adams Wilderness and sparser fuels, progression is expected to slow.
Fire crews will continue to patrol containment lines, mopping up, treating hot spots and increasing the depth of the line. Structure defense is also occurring as a precaution. Containment remains a priority, and hand crews will be deployed in areas where heavy equipment (i.e. dozers) cannot be utilized due to steep terrain.
Madera County: NORTH ZONE
Crews continue to hold, mop up and strengthen the southern and western containment line. Yesterday, a two acre slop over was quickly incorporated into the fire line and a one acre spot fire west of Whiskey Falls Campground was also contained with the help of helicopter water drops. East of Central Camp and south of Little Shuteye Peak continues to be monitored, the fire is still hung up in the rocks in the same location as it has been for the last nine days. In the Ansel Adams Wilderness, spot fires are occurring on the northwest side of the fire, torching pockets of vegetation interspersed within the granite. Very light fire activity is occurring on the northern end of the fire.
Removal of hazardous standing dead trees continues along the primary roads within the fire area including the 81 Road and the Grizzly Road. The structure protection group is working throughout the fire area including in the Johnson Meadow area.
The fire is still 10-12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes, no forward progression is occurring due to the natural barriers of rock and the Lions Fire (2018) burn scar which help to limit fire spread on the north-eastern flank. The reported growth on the Creek Fire was 1770 acres during the evening operational period and containment remained at 39%. As areas under evacuation warning and orders are repopulated residents, business owners, and others returning to the area must do so safely. Significant efforts are underway to allow repopulation including restoration of utility services and removal of other hazards, such as dangerous trees.
Adhering to posted speed limits, following guidance of utility providers, and following manufacturer recommendations on auxiliary equipment (e.g. generators) must be implemented for the safe return to areas where orders and warnings are being lifted. Special attention must also be given to heavy machinery and firefighting apparatus still operating in the area.
Residents should prepare for potential interruptions in utility services and follow recommendations by utility providers. Additionally, manufacturer recommendations for generator use and only using them outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning within enclosed spaced such as homes and businesses.
Today on the South Zone of the Creek Fire there will be active fire on the eastern portion of the zone towards the 80 Road and Potter Pass. A spot fire south of China Peak that threatens containment and may progress east towards the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, but has held within control lines. If the fire moves into sparser fuels progression will slow as it moves towards the Ansel Adams Wilderness. There may be a planned firing operation along Kaiser Pass Road which will cause visible smoke to rise within the fire area.
Operationally, fire resources will perform tactical patrol near the fire perimeter mopping up hot spots and ensuring structures are prepared for defense in the event the fire approaches communities. Containment remains a priority, and handcrews will be deployed in areas where heavy equipment (i.e. bulldozers) cannot be utilized due to challenging terrain.
Madera County: NORTH ZONE
Weather conditions are changing with a high-pressure system moving across the area. The system shifts winds to the northeast along ridgetops and upper slopes producing a light to moderate down-sloping wind. Higher temperatures this week and lower humidity will increase fire activity in the higher elevations. Expect smoke conditions to increase along the Highway 41 Corridor.
Crews working in the Central Camp and Whiskey Falls area have finished the firing operations and they are now patrolling for hot spots and strengthening containment. Snagging operations to remove the hazardous standing dead trees continue in the area. Snagging crews will also be working on the 81 Road and the Grizzly Road. The military support there was a great success. Crews will remain in those areas and Cascadel Woods to strengthen containment.
Work around the Little Shuteye area is going well. Due to the light fuel load and rocky terrain, they are able to work directly on the fireline. The structure protection group is in the Johnson Meadow area. Cattle in and around the fire area are being rounded up and moved.
Areas of active fire are east of Chiquito Creek and the 5S04 road and east of Beasore Meadow and south to Central Camp Road.
At its closest distance, the fire was measured to be about 10-12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes. The visual inspection verified that the natural barriers of rock and the previous Lions Fire (2018) burn scar limit fire spread in the north-eastern flank. Conditions continue to be monitored very closely by emergency officials. Additional information is available via the Sierra National Forest Facebook page, or the below link:

Please respect the Temporary Flight Restriction. The use of drones is not permitted over the fire area. A drone incursion will result in the grounding of all firefighting aircraft. Remember, "If you fly - We can't."

CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Fresno County: SOUTH ZONE
Overnight fire activity in the South Zone of the Creek Fire did not significantly increase the existing fire perimeter. Areas of the fire experiencing the most activity was south of Mount Tom and the most eastern portion of the South Zone east of China Peak. There may be movement in alignment with the change in weather and terrain driven winds towards the Ansel Adams Wilderness.
Firing operations may take place on the northeastern portions of the South Zone in the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. If this occurs it will be within control lines and anyone in the area may see smoke rising from the fire. In general, the fire will smolder within the existing perimeter in heavier fuels such as timber and dense fuel beds in the southern portions of the fire near Burrough Mountain and Sycamore Canyon.,
Operationally, fire resources will perform tactical patrol near the fire perimeter mopping up hot spots and ensuring structures are prepared for defense in the event the fire approaches communities. Containment remains a priority, and handcrews will be deployed in areas where heavy equipment (i.e. bulldozers) cannot be utilized due to challenging terrain.
