TODAY

The Bobcat Fire grew to 33, 312 acres with 6% containment today. Crews conducted strategic firing operations in the south as the fire remained very active reaching Chantry Flat in Santa Anita Canyon. There has been significant western growth towards Mt. Wilson and Mt. Harvard where hand crews and dozers are working to protect the area. Fire activity is expected to grow north where crews continue to conduct firing operations. Numerous spot fires near Buckhorn Flat and Highway 2 were successfully contained. On the west, the fire is staying within containment lines near Highway 39. The Station, Ranch2 and Fish fire scars are helping moderate fire activity due to low fuel loads. Tonight, the priority will remain to protect foothill communities using additional resources that arrived today. Tomorrow, Sept. 14, fire management will host a virtual public meeting via Zoom at 6:30 PM. Representatives from the Bobcat Fire will be available to provide an update and respond to your questions. Special Statement

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a Smoke Advisory for the South Coast Air Basin through Sunday September 13th due to the smoke from the Bobcat and El Dorado fires. Additionally, smoke from the fires in Northern and Central California is also being transported south and may impact the South Coast Air Basin and Coachella Valley.

Fires

The Bobcat fire has grown to 31, 991 acres with 6% containment. The fire continues to actively grow to the north and south side. The El Dorado fire has grown to 14, 283 acres with 41% containment. The fire continues to slowly grow in the northwest and north side.

Smoke:

The smoke from the fires in Central and Northern California have moved out of the forecast area. This will decrease, but not eliminate the hazy skies which have been present Smoke from the El Dorado and Bobcat fires trapped near the surface will begin to mix out somewhat this morning and be transported to the east and upslope and up canyon as the day progresses, but not completely mix out. The clearer skies today however, will allow the fires to get more active and produce more smoke. Tonight, smoke will move downslope, downcanyon, and towards to west. The areas closest to the mouth of the canyons near the fire will experience the worst smoke. This pattern is expected to repeat itself tomorrow.

Bobcat Fire Reporte Diario Septiembre 13 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

HOY:

Bobcat Fire Morning Update 91320

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

TODAY:

The fire continues to actively grow to the north and south, with keeping it out of the foothills

communities as the top priority. Crews are constructing handline and dozerline where

possible to stop the downhill progression. Indirect lines are being used where direct attack

is not possible. As air conditions allow, helicopters are being used to support the ground

forces. Elsewhere on the fire the focus will be on keeping it south of Highway 2 and west

of Highway 39. Indirect dozerline continues to be constructed to keep the fire away from

Mount Wilson and to herd it into the Station Fire scar, where there will be significantly

reduced fire behavior. This fire has mainly been driven by steep terrain and dry fuels,

some of which have not seen fire activity in at least 60 years. Tonight, smoke and flame will

remain visible to surrounding communities as fire activity remains in the south.

YESTERDAY:

Crews worked actively all last night on the southern end of the fire where it is burning

downhill into the foothills community. Fire crews saw heavy fire activity in the north and

south ends of the Bobcat Fire yesterday. On the south end, the fire reached Santa Anita

Canyon near Chantry Flat and remained active overnight.

WEATHER:

Weather today will be similar to yesterday, being warm and dry, with low humidities and

light winds. These conditions are expected to continue until at least mid-week. It is

anticipated that smoke will lift earlier today resulting in increased fire activity. A Smoke

Advisory has been issued for the fire area. The fire area is under a Fuels and Fire

Behavior Advisory. Abnormally dry fuels are leading to extreme fire behavior and rapid

rates of spread.

EVACUATIONS ALERTS:

Evacuation warnings are in effect for Monrovia, Arcadia, Bradbury, Sierra Madre, Altadena, Duarte

and Pasadena. At this time, no Evacuation Orders in these communities have been issued—

however, it’s important to stay well-informed as this is an evolving incident. An Evacuation Order

has been issued for Camp Williams.

SUMMARY:

The Bobcat Fire started on September 6th at 12:21. The fire is located near the Cogswell Dam and

West Fork Day Use area. The fire is burning in heavy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. Along with

California Team #1, the fire is currently managed under Unified Command by the Angeles National

Forest, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office and cooperating

fire departments.

Bobcat Fire Evening Update September 12 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

TODAY:

Fire crews saw heavy fire activity in the north and south ends of the Bobcat Fire today. On the south end, the fire reached Santa Anita Canyon near Chantry Flat where fire activity will remain high overnight. Priorities remain to hold containment lines and protect the foothill communities as the fire continues to progress south. On the northeast end of the fire, near the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 39, crews used strategic firing operations to keep the fire south of Hwy 2 and west of Hwy 39. Both the eastern and western ends of the fire remain moderated by the Ranch2 and Station Fire burn scars allowing for lesser fuel loads. This fire has mainly been driven by steep terrain and dry fuels, some of which have not seen fire activity in at least 60 years. As smoke lifted, aircraft operations were able to monitor growth and make water drops. Tonight, smoke and flame will remain visible to surrounding communities as fire activity remains in the south.

YESTERDAY:

Crews worked actively all last night getting a foothold in southern end of the fire. Firefighters focused on protecting the communities at the south end of the fire where it is burning downhill as winds pushed the fire northeast yesterday. Two LA County Blackhawks arrived in the late evening as smoke lifted allowing for perimeter control in the southwest portion of the fire. Poor air quality due to smoke cover was experienced in the foothill communities and limited the use of aircraft.  There was little fire movement on the west and east sides, with most of the fire growth occurring on the north and south ends.

WEATHER:

The warm and dry conditions allowed the fire to remain active through the day. For tonight and Sunday, slightly warmer conditions are expected. Relative humidity will exhibit poor recovery tonight with minimum values in the teens on Sunday. Weak northeasterly/downcanyon winds are expected tonight with southwesterly/upcanyon winds on Sunday. For the first half of next week, only minor day-to-day changes are anticipated. The fire area is under a Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory.  Abnormally dry fuels are leading to extreme fire behavior and rapid rates of spread.

EVACUATIONS ALERTS:

Evacuation warnings are in effect for Monrovia, Arcadia, Bradbury, Sierra Madre, Altadena, Duarte and Pasadena. At this time, no Evacuation Orders in these communities have been issued—however, it’s important to stay well-informed as this is an evolving incident.  An Evacuation Order has been issued for Camp Williams.

Smoke Advisory

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Valid Saturday September 12, 2020 through Sunday September 13, 2020.

This advisory is in effect through Sunday afternoon. South Coast AQMD will issue an update if additional information becomes available.

In any area impacted by smoke: If you smell smoke or see ash due to a wildfire, limit your exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed or seeking alternate shelter, and avoiding vigorous physical activity. For more tips on protecting yourself during a wildfire, see South Coast AQMD’s Wildfire Smoke & Ash Health & Safety Tips page: http://www.aqmd.gov/wildfire-health-info-smoke-tips.

Overnight Saturday through Sunday morning: Winds will be light and variable overnight. Areas south of the Bobcat fire along the I-10 corridor from Pasadena to Rancho Cucamonga will likely see the highest particulate matter levels as smoke is likely to remain closer to the ground overnight. Smoke impacts from the El Dorado Fire are predicted for western Riverside County and the Coachella Valley, with the highest particulate matter levels likely between San Bernardino and Banning. Other areas of the South Coast Air Basin could also see smoke impacts on Sunday morning to a lesser extent.

Sunday afternoon: Onshore winds will start around noon and will likely move smoke to the northeast and east into the mountains of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties and out of the South Coast Air Basin. Modest smoke impacts may persist throughout the rest of the South Coast Air Basin and Coachella Valley due to smoke from the Northern and Central California fires.

Bobcat Fire Morning Update September 12 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

TODAY:

Fire crews will continue to focus on increasing containment lines along the south end of the fire to protect the foothill communities. Throughout the day, heavy fire activity will continue to be seen on both the south and north ends. The eastern portion of the fire is burning downhill and entering into a burn scar from the Ranch2 Fire, creating less intense fire behavior for firefighters. Much of the western side of the fire is entering an old burn scar as well, which reduces the rate of spread. Steep terrain and dry fuels, some of which haven’t burned in the last 60 years, will create challenges for crews.  Local fire departments will continue to conduct structure protection within the foothill communities. Crews will also be working on the north end to keep the fire south of Highway 2 and west of Highway 39.

YESTERDAY:

Crews worked actively all last night getting a foothold in southern end of the fire.  Firefighters focused on protecting the communities at the south end of the fire where it is burning downhill as winds pushed the fire northeast yesterday. Two LA County Blackhawks worked the perimeter control in the southwest portion of the fire.  Poor air quality due to smoke cover was experienced in the foothill communities and limited the use of aircraft.  There was little fire movement on the west and east sides, with a majority of the fire growth occurring on the north and south ends.

WEATHER:

Continued warm and dry conditions with poor humidity recovery along the ridgetops will allow active burning and fire growth through the night. There will be a slight cooling of temperatures Sunday. Poor air quality due to smoke cover will continue today.
