928 Riverside Fire Daily Update

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Sunny, clear, dry and breezy conditions are expected today with sustained winds across the fire to continue over the next 24 hours. Potential for 40-45 mile per hour gusts along east-west orientated drainages and Goat Mountain are forecast.  Creeping and smoldering fire activity is expected.  A creeping fire exhibits slow rates of spread and low flames.  Significant growth of the fire is not anticipated due to lingering effects of the moisture we received over the past week.

Open areas of fine fuels, such as grass and leaves, will dry faster and carry fire more readily.  Elevations above 2000’ will dry more quickly due to lower humidity levels.  East winds will bring more smoke to the area and isolated smokes from vegetation burning within the fire perimeter will be visible.

Yesterday:  Firefighters continued to patrol the fire perimeter, improved fire lines and responded to smoldering fire activity that produced visible smoke near fire lines. Crews on the east side of the fire worked to complete line preparation.  On the south and west sides of the fire crews strengthened fire lines and removed vegetation working with chippers and masticators.  No fire growth occurred. Today’s Activities: Firefighters are focused on monitoring firelines, patrolling for heat pockets held in heavy fuels and suppression repair.  Heavy equipment work continues along roads with chippers and masticators to improve existing containment and contingency firelines on the south and west side of the fire.  Work along the 224 road continues.  In addition to monitoring, patrol efforts and suppression repair, firefighters are identifying and felling trees that were weakened by the fire to improve safety along roads and around structures.  With the sustained winds and potential for gusty conditions, falling trees are anticipated.   Evacuations: Current evacuation information is available at www.clackamas.us/wildfirestwitter.com/ClackCoSheriff or by calling 503-655-8224.  Smoke info: Oregon Smoke Blog: oregonsmoke.blogspot.com  Willamette Valley Smoke outlook: wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlooks/nworegon Closures:  Mt. Weather and Fire Behavior: In the past week, more than three inches of rain have fallen over the fire area.  Sunny, clear, dry and breezy conditions are expected through today and into Monday with the potential for 30 mile per hour gusts along east-west orientated drainages.  No spread is expected. It will take a few days of warmer and dry weather before fine fuels such as grass are able to carry fire. East winds may bring more smoke to the area and isolated smokes from vegetation burning within the fire perimeter may be visible.
Yesterday: Firefighters patrolled the fire perimeter watching for places near the fireline where heat has held-over through the rains.  Crews on the south end of the fire worked to connect segments of dozer line with handline.

Today’s Activities: Along with handline, containment lines can include a combination of roads, scars from past fires, treated vegetation areas and natural features such as water or expanses of rock that are free of vegetation. Heavy equipment operators are working along roads with chippers and masticators to improve existing containment and contingency firelines.  Work along the 224 road continues.  This road is the main access to the Timberlake Job Corps and Ripplebrook Guard Station. Patrol efforts are ongoing to seek and extinguish areas where heat has held in larger downed trees, stumps or root systems. In addition to monitoring and patrol efforts, firefighters are identifying and felling trees that were weakened by the fire and pose hazards along roads and around structures.  Evacuations: Current evacuation information is available at www.clackamas.us/wildfirestwitter.com/ClackCoSheriff or by calling 503-655-8224.  Smoke info: Oregon Smoke Blog: oregonsmoke.blogspot.com Willamette Valley Smoke outlook: wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlooks/nworegon Closures:  Mt. September 26 Riverside Fire Update

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Weather and Fire Behavior: Wind speeds up to 40 miles per hour and wet conditions presented challenges for those working on the Riverside Fire Friday.  Fire weakens trees, making them more susceptible to falling during high winds.  Further, after vegetation is burned from around rocks, they are more likely to shift, particularly when rain moistens soils.

Low clouds and forecast precipitation will limit fire behavior today.  Spread rates will be very low.  While precipitation over the area since Wednesday has affected fire behavior, there are places within the perimeter that are sheltered by the tree canopy and continue to smolder.

Yesterday: Crews patrolled the fire area, seeking and extinguishing hot spots. Suppression repair work, including constructing waterbars to address potential soil erosion, is ongoing. Good progress is being made working along the Abbott road to secure it as a potential holding line to the north of the fire.

Today’s Activities:
Hand crews are connecting segments of dozer line southwest of the fire.  Work continues along the 224 road which is the main access to the Timberlake Job Corps and Ripplebrook Guard Station.  Firefighters are patrolling the fire perimeter seeking and extinguishing areas where heat is holding in larger downed trees, stumps or root systems.  Improving roads to be used as fireline involves thinning vegetation from along the roadsides and, where necessary, widening the area of bare soil.  As a result of this work, there can be large accumulations of cut vegetation.  Where work is complete, chippers are being utilized to process brush and limbs cut during line construction.
