TRAP FIRE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 26 2020

The Trap Creek fire is located on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Middle Fork RD of the Salmon-Challis NF, approximately 9 miles northwest of Stanley, ID. The fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. Rain and cooler temperatures have given firefighters time to complete containment line along the north and eastern portions of the fire. Crews continue to monitor fire activity on the south and western perimeter of the fire.

Hazard tree mitigation along highway 21 has ended, and the highway is now fully open. However; the public is still encouraged to drive slowly due to smokey conditions and the presence of firefighters entering and exiting the roadway. 

Sierra Front Incident Management Team will transfer the Trap Creek Fire back to Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Salmon-Challis NF fire personnel as of 0700 Monday, September 28th. Incident Command will be Colton Bates.

CLOSURES – A forest area closure is in effect for the area around the fire and was expanded on September 19th to include Valley Creek Road (see map). The purpose of this order is to protect the public and fire fighters during wildfire activity suppression activities. This includes all roads, trails, campgrounds, and hunting units within the closure.

Percent Containment: 41%

Continued cooler temperatures, cloud cover and higher humidity has given firefighters time to complete containment line along the north and eastern portions of the fire. Crews continue to monitor fire activity on the south and western perimeter of the fire.

Hazard tree mitigation along highway 21 has ended, and the highway is now fully open. However; the public is still encouraged to drive slowly due to smokey conditions and the presence of firefighters entering and exiting the roadway.

The Trap Creek fire is located on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Middle Fork RD of the Salmon-Challis NF, approximately 9 miles northwest of Stanley, ID. The fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. Over the weekend, a cold front brought rains that reduced fire activity allowing fire fighters to increase the amount of containment line on the north and eastern portions of the fire. Gusty winds, ahead of incoming storm front, will likely cause single tree torching and creeping of fire within the existing fire perimeter today.

Hazard tree mitigation along highway 21 has ended, and the highway is now fully open. However; the public is still encouraged to drive slowly due to smokey conditions and the presence of firefighters entering and exiting the roadway. 

CLOSURES – A forest area closure is in effect for the area around the fire and was expanded on September 19th to include Valley Creek Road (see map). The purpose of this order is to protect the public and fire fighters during wildfire activity suppression activities. This includes all roads, trails, campgrounds, and hunting units within the closure.

The fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. Over the weekend, a cold front brought rains that reduced fire activity allowing fire fighters to increase the amount of containment line on the north and western portions of the fire. Winds, drier conditions and warmer temperatures increased fire activity yesterday causing torching of trees within the existing fire perimeter and are forecasted again for today.  

Hazard tree mitigation along highway 21 has ended, and the highway is now fully open. However; the public is still encouraged to drive slowly due to smokey conditions and the presence of firefighters entering and exiting the roadway.   

CLOSURES – A forest area closure is in effect for the area around the fire and was expanded on September 19th to include Valley Creek Road (see map). The purpose of this order is to protect the public and fire fighters during wildfire activity suppression activities. The Trap Creek fire is located on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Middle Fork RD of the Salmon-Challis NF, approximately 9 miles northwest of Stanley, ID. The fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. Over the weekend, a cold front brought rains that cleared heavy smoke and provided some reprieve for firefighters and the local community. Forecasted winds, drier conditions and warmer temperatures could increase fire activity today.
 
Hazard tree mitigation has begun along highway 21 and is expected to continue for 2 to 3 days. The project aims to address standing hazard tree patches that continue to pose a threat to firefighter and public safety. Highway 21 is open; however, a pilot car is in place from mile post 116 to 119 during fire crew work hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Be advised that intermittent closures of the highway are possible due to hazard tree mitigation and increased fire behavior.
 
CLOSURES - A forest area closure is in effect for the area around the fire and was expanded on Septen1ber 19th to include Valley Creek Road (see map). The purpose of this order is to protect the public and fire fighters during wildfire activity suppression activities. Public Safety

 

Pursuant to Title 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited in the Area described in this Order, including the roads and trail within the Area, located within the administrative boundaries of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Sawtooth National Forest and Yankee Fork Ranger District, Salmon-Challis National Forest. This Order will be in effect when signed and shall remain in effect through October 30, 2020, at 00:01 AM, unless rescinded earlier by the Forest Supervisor.

 

1.      Going into or upon the Area described below. 36 CFR 261.52(e).

2.      Being on the Roads described below.  36 CFR 261.54(e).

3.      Being on the Trails described below. 36 CFR 261.55(a). 

EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e) the following persons are exempt from this Order:

1.      Persons with a special use authorization or other Forest Service authorization specifically exempting them from the effect of this Order.

2.      Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.

3.      Federal or State administrative personnel in the performance of an official duty.

All National Forest System lands, roads, and trails within the boundary described beginning at the junction of Nation Forest Trail (NFT) 628 and NFT 624 in TIO N, Rl l E, Section 25; then continuing North along NFT 624 to the intersection of NFT 626 in Tl 1 N, RIO E, Section 15; then continuing North along NFT 626 to intersection with NFT 026 in Tl 1 N, RIO E, Section 10; then continuing North on NFT 026 to the junction of National Forest Road (NFR) 195 in T12 N, Rl 1 E, Section 23, then continuing Northeast on NFR 195 to the junction of Highway 21 in Tl 1 N,

State Highway 21 will remain open. 

PURPOSE;

The Area described above is closed to public entry in order to provide for public safety during wildfire suppression activities.

 

IMPLEMENTATION;

1. This Order will be in effect when signed and shall remain in effect through October 30, 2020, at 00:01 AM, unless rescinded earlier by the Forest Supervisor.

2.      A Map identifying the above-described Area, Roads and trails is attached hereto as Exhibit A, and is made part of this Order.

3.       Violation of the above prohibition(s) is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for an individual, or $10,000 for an organization, and/or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months. [Title 16 USC 551, Title 18 USC 3571 (b)(6), Title 18 USC 3581 (b)(7).]

TRAP CREEK FIRE:  The Trap Creek fire is located on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area approximately 9 miles northwest of Stanley, ID. The Trap Creek Fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. As of yesterday morning, Sierra Front Incident Management Team 1 with Incident Commander Scott Stephenson took over fire operations. Moisture and cooler temperatures helped moderate yesterday’s fire behavior. 

Highway 21 is open, however, a pilot car is in place from mile post 116 to 119 due to limited visibility from smoke and for firefighter safety. Monday, a hazard tree mitigation project will begin along the burned sections of highway to address standing hazard tree patches that continue to pose a threat to firefighter and public safety. Be advised that intermittent closures of the highway are possible due to increase in fire behavior and the upcoming hazard tree mitigation project. 

CLOSURES – A forest area closure is in effect for the area around the fire and was expanded yesterday to include Valley Creek Road (see map). The purpose of this order is to protect the public and fire fighters during wildfire activity suppression activities. This includes all roads, trails, campgrounds, and hunting units within the closure.

The Trap Creek fire is located on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area approximately 9 miles northwest of Stanley, ID. The Trap Creek Fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. As of 0700 this morning, Sierra Front Incident Management Team 1 with Incident Commander Scott Stephenson took over fire operations. Standing snag patches continue to pose a threat to firefighters and Highway 21 traffic. Be advised that intermittent closures of the highway are possible due to increase in fire behavior.

TRAP FIRE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 18 2020

The Trap Creek fire is located on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area ~ 9 miles northwest of Stanley, ID. The Trap Creek Fire was first reported on September 14th, 2020 near Trap Creek Campground. Hot, dry, south winds transitioning to northwest were a factor in yesterday’s fire growth. Winds continue to pose a threat to fireline operations due to the high number of snags. Red Flag conditions expected today. Incident Commander (IC) is Riley Rhodes and Jake Renz is the IC trainee.

HWY 21 is open, however, a pilot car is in place from mile post 112 to 119 due to limited visibility from smoke, trees falling onto the highway, and fire fighter safety. Standing snag patches pose a continual threat to firefighters and HWY 21 traffic. Highway concerns expected for the next 3 or 4 days. Be advised that intermittent closures of the highway are possible due to increase in fire behavior.
