Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Fire
The Dixie and Jumbo Fires were unable to get an infrared flight
last night due to weather. The Fires still stand at 29,309 acres
on the Dixie Fire and 1,624 acres on the Jumbo Fire. Fire
personnel continue to hold, improve, and monitor fire
perimeters while taking action on other locations as needed.

Smoke
There’s an increased chance for rain and the possibility of
thunderstorms in the area and over the fire. Yesterday,
locations near the fire saw smoke concentrations ranging from
Good to Unhealthy, staying mainly in the Moderate to
Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Predicted higher relative
humidity values will moderate fire behavior. Southwest
transport winds, gusty winds from thunderstorms and wind
flow generally from the south will continue to push smoke to
the north/northeast. Smoke from local and regional fires
continues to impact the area and localized smoke continues to
settle in drainages, namely along the Salmon River.

Other
Idaho Department of Environmental Quality in Lewiston and
Idaho Falls has issued an Air Pollution Forecast and Caution to
notify residents of Latah, Lewis, Lemhi, Idaho, Clearwater, and
Nez Perce counties of degraded air quality due to wildfire
smoke. The Nez Perce Tribe issued an Air Quality Advisory and
Burn Ban. All are effective until further notice.

 Daily Update 7/19/2021

Yesterday was a critical fire weather day, but overall the firefighters’
control lines held. The Dixie Fire did grow, especially to the north,
toward but not crossing Jack Mountain Hill. There is a Red Flag warning
today, with a 25-35 percent chance of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes
over the fire area.

Dixie Fire
Despite shifting winds, low humidity, and high temperatures, the
Dixie Fire only grew by 939 acres yesterday. Most of the fires’
growth was north. Firefighters have been buffering Jack Mountain
Road as a control line, and yesterday the line successfully held.
Three heavy equipment task forces plan to go direct on that portion
of the fire, conditions permitting, and air operations applied fire
retardant yesterday as pre-treatment. There was also some fire
growth in the Comstock area, and firefighters successfully employed
a combination of hand crew work and helicopter bucket work.
Firefighters are also chipping excess flammable fuels along USFS
Road 222. Night shift continues to patrol the Dixie/Comstock area,
and firefighters continue to monitor the Mallard Creek area. Air
operations supported a successful initial attack on a new fire start
along the Salmon River last night, and was able to fully contain that
new fire. The Dixie Fire remains north of the Salmon River.

Jumbo Fire

Firefighters continue to monitor the Jumbo Fire daily, and suppression
tactics will be reassessed if conditions warrant. The Jumbo fire grew by
39 acres.

Weather and Smoke
Temperatures today are expected to be in the mid 80s in most areas. Winds are expected from the
south today, around 7 mph, with gusts as high as the mid 20s. Cloud cover is expected, which will
continue to result in smoky conditions. For more information on smoke conditions visit
https://fire.airnow.gov/.

Fire Restrictions
Based on current fire activity, land management agencies and fire managers in the Grangeville Area
implemented STAGE 2 FIRE RESTRICTIONS effective Friday, July 16. See Inciweb for more information:
https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/7608/60737/.

Salmon River Recreation Advisory

Boaters on the Salmon River are directed to stop at Allison Ranch for updated fire information prior
to continuing downriver. Expect active fire on the north side of the river from Allison Ranch south to
Mackay Bar. Designated camping areas along the fire are open for camping, however, be alert for
rolling, flaming debris on river canyon slopes.

Evacuations and Closures
Evacuation orders continue to be in place in the communities around the fire perimeter including
the Dixie/Comstock Area, Mallard, and White Water Ranch. For evacuation information and updates,
please call Idaho County Sheriff’s Office at 208-983-1100.
The Payette National Forest has issued a closure order south of the Dixie fire for multiple trails on

Special Statement
Red Flag Warning in effect from 11AM-8PM for thunderstorms

Fire
Both fires saw growth yesterday putting the Dixie Fire at
29,309 acres and the Jumbo Fire at 1,624 acres. The
perimeters of both fires continue to creep out and scattered
heat continues to cool. Scattered perimeters appear to be
similar to previous nights.

Smoke
Erratic winds and thunderstorms are possible. Winds from the
south will be gusty at times and central Idaho will continue to
be impacted by smoke from local and regional fires to the
South and Southwest. Transport winds have been doing a good
job of keeping smoke aloft, but areas close to the fires will see
smoke continuing to settle in drainages, especially along the
Salmon River. Any weather events may impact fire behavior.

Fire

The Dixie Fire is 27,287 acres with not as much growth as we've been seeing. In the southeast, the fire held at Mallard Cr. In the southwest, it continues to burn in the trail 212. There is also significant growth between those two areas. The northeast area between Lost Hunter Creek to Grouse Cr area also saw some growth. The Jumbo Fire also had minimal growth putting it at 1,397 acres. Growth was spread around the perimeter in small patches.

Smoke

Today's weather will bring hotter, dryer, and windier conditions than we've seen this past week. Southwest winds will bring smoke from local and regional fires to the south and southwest of the Dixie and Jumbo Fires. Smoke concentrations will increase and those areas closest to the fires will see the greatest impacts. Any new starts will create new smoke that may affect more/new locations. Changes in weather conditions and fire behavior may also impact this forecast.

Publication Type: News

Critical fire weather conditions are present across the fire with southwest winds at 10-15 mph, low relative humidity, and high temperatures. This will be the hottest, driest, and windiest day since the fire was discovered. Firefighters are expecting an increase in fire activity today with the change in weather.

The Dixie Fire

Dixie fire grew by 1,134 acres with most of the growth along the Salmon River and in the northeast corner. Heavy equipment task forces continue to work on a fuel break along Jack Mt road (FS Road 1190) above the northern perimeter of the fire. Mallard Ranch and the campground have structure protection in place and are being monitored. Along the eastern edge, crews are removing hazard trees on the 421 where the fire crossed the road between Vitta Point and White Water Ranch. To the south, the fire continues to spread along the Salmon River from Mallard Creek to just past Rhett Creek. Crews are continuing to do structure protection preparation along the river corridor. Within the communities of Dixie and Comstock, firefighters continue to hold and improve line, and do structure preparation on the west side of Dixie and down in the Comstock area.

The Jumbo fire grew by 62 acres. It will continue to be monitored daily and suppression tactics will be reassessed if conditions warrant.

Weather and Smoke

Today temperatures will be in the 90’s across the fire, with relative humidity around 15%. Winds are coming out of the southwest at 10-15 mph with gusts up to 20-25 mph on ridgetops. Hazy skies will persist as southwest winds bring smoke aloft from regional and local fires. For more information on smoke conditions visit https://fire.airnow.gov/.

Fighting Fire with Fire

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Dylan Turner, Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest

On July 12th, 2021 at 10am, after several days of evaluation and preparation, firing operations began around the Dixie community. These operations, also known as burnouts, seek to “fight fire with fire”, in which controllable fire is intentionally set under certain conditions in order to remove fuel between the area of protection and the fire of concern. With the Dixie Fire being the highest priority, efforts were focused on the east side of Dixie.

In order for a burnout operation to be conducted, a series of criteria and considerations must be met, as dictated by a Firing Plan. Among the first of these criteria is the establishment of a control line. The control line acts as a secured anchor in which fire operations can be centered from and the chance of spread can be limited. These lines can be dug by hand crews or heavy machinery, or be a pre-existing road. In the case of Dixie, a pre-existing road was utilized. Another consideration that must be met before commencing a firing operation is resource evaluation and acquisition. Often this includes aerial support and both Type-1 and -2 crews, as well as heavy equipment and water access.

Once these were met, the crews based around Dixie could begin preparing for their burnout. Beyond the control line fuels were minimized, removing ground brush/debris and ladder fuels that could climb into the larger trees and spread. Once the fuel load is deemed safe and controllable, fire-lighting by Type-1 teams can begin. This starts away from the control line towards the main fire, and is slowly done back towards the line as needed. By doing it this way, heat from the main fire pulls the heat, and thus the flames, from the controlled fire into the main fire. As teams are lighting, Type-2’s can keep an eye around the control line and back in the area of protection for any smoldering or other signs of heat. The crucial thing to keep in mind at this time is being patient and methodical. Excessively lighting, lighting in the wrong place, or missing signs of fire activity could cause unpredicted results.

After a burnout is conducted, the area is closely monitored. In the case of Dixie, swing teams, which operate from evening to 12am, and night teams, operating 12am to 6am, were stationed.  As of July 13th, 2021, the operation was considered successful. With the threat of the Dixie Fire to the Dixie community being lessened, efforts could now be made on the west side of Dixie, where there is potential threat from the Jumbo Fire should it approach Dixie. Control lines and fuel removal operations are underway, with the need for firing operations being under consideration.

Fire

The Dixie Fire is currently 26,348 acres. The largest area of growth continues to be the southeast portion along the Salmon River heading northeast. A spot across Grouse Creek in the northeast also grew and is established at about 10 acres. The Jumbo Fire is 1,358 acres. The biggest areas of growth were in the south and southeast portions of the fire. Minimal growth was detected around the perimeter in small patches.

Smoke

Hazy skies will persist today as southwest winds bring smoke aloft from regional and local fires to the south/southwest of the Dixie and Jumbo Fires, namely the Bootleg Fire in Oregon. Lower elevations are expected to stay relatively clear while some of the thicker smoke may settle in valleys and drainages. Increased fire behavior is also expected, which could increase smoke production. Overall, conditions have improved over the area and concentrations should range from Good to Moderate with potential for Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups in those areas closest to the fires.

Other

Idaho Department of Environmental Quality in Lewiston and Idaho Falls has issued an Air Pollution Forecast and Caution to notify residents of Latah, Lewis, Lemhi, Idaho, Clearwater, and Nez Perce counties of degraded air quality due to wildfire smoke.
