Location: North Fork Pound burn unit located two miles west, northwest of Pound, VA and 3.2 miles south of Jenkins, KY.
Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists are planning to begin the 5,033 acre burn on Monday, April 11 and continue on Tuesday, April 12. You may see smoke from this prescribed burn for several days.
Purpose: This burn operation will burn a small portion of the larger burn unit which will act as a safety control line during the prescribed burn later this spring. Ultimately, prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape.
Additional Information and Road/Trail Closures: Sections of the Pine Mountain Trail (Forest Trail #201) and the Red Fox Trail (Forest Trail #205) that are within the burn area will be temporarily closed. For your safety, please follow posted signs and trail closures when they occur. The controlled burn is expected to have lingering smoke effects in Wise and Letcher counties. Depending on wind direction, residents and travelers in these areas may see or smell smoke.

Location: Cable Gap burn unit is located three miles northeast of Pound, VA, 2.7 miles Southeast of Jenkins, KY and approximately 1.8 miles southwest of Gaskins and Burdine, KY.
Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists will begin the 1,300-acre burn on Sunday, April 10. The ignition-phase will be concluded before the end of the day and firefighters will continue to monitor the area for several days until the fire is extinguished by rain. You may see smoke from this prescribed burn for several days.
Purpose: This burn will improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape.
Additional Information and Road/Trail Closures: Pine Mountain Trail (Forest Trail #201), Austin Cemetery, South Mountain Road, and part of White Oak Creek Road may be closed. For your safety, please follow posted signs and trail closures when they occur. The controlled burn is expected to have lingering smoke effects in Wise and Letcher counties. Location: The burn area is located two miles southeast of Hot Springs, VA and includes approximately 2,200 acres of the Porter’s Mill burn unit and the north Big Wilson burn unit.
Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists, The Nature Conservancy, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, among others, will begin the burn on April 4, 2022. The ignition-phase will likely be completed today using both aerial and ground ignitions. Firefighters will continue to monitor the burn area for several days until the fire is extinguished by rain. You may see flames and smoke from this prescribed burn for several days.

The Cable Gap unit is located three miles northeast of Pound, VA, 2.7 miles Southeast of Jenkins, KY and approximately 1.8 miles southwest of Gaskins and Burdine, KY. The North Fork Pound burn unit is located two miles west, northwest of Pound, VA and 3.2 miles south of Jenkins, KY.
Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists are planning to conduct the burns Sunday, April 3 and Monday, April 4. You may see smoke from these prescribed burn operations for several days.

The Cable Gap unit is located three miles northeast of Pound, VA, 2.7 miles Southeast of Jenkins, KY and approximately 1.8 miles southwest of Gaskins and Burdine, KY. The North Fork Pound burn unit is located two miles west, northwest of Pound, VA and 3.2 miles south of Jenkins, KY.
Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists will conduct the burns Monday, March 28 through Wednesday March 30. You may see smoke from these prescribed burn operations for several days.

Location: The 302-acre Mill Creek Unit 1 prescribed burn will take place east of Fenwick Mines Recreation Area in Craig County, Virginia.
Date and Time: The Forest Service will begin ignitions on Tuesday, March 22, 2021. This prescribed burn will be completed in one day. Firefighters will continue to monitor the area for several days after the burn.
Objective: Prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape. Safety is the Forest Service’s top priority, and Forest fire managers will conduct the prescribed burn only under appropriate weather conditions.
Additional Information: Smoke from the area may be visible from New Castle, Barbours Creek and Oriskany. Depending on wind direction on the day of the burn, residents of Oriskany and the Craig Creek Valley along County Road 615 (Craigs Creek Road) may smell smoke.

The 1,118-acre Elkhorn prescribed burn unit located on Elkhorn Mountain is approximately four miles southwest of Stokesville. For your safety, please follow posted signs and comply with road closures when they occur. North River Road (Forest Service Road 95) may be temporarily closed during the burn. Campers in the North River Campground and residents of Stokesville or Staunton may see or smell smoke. Ignition will take a minimum of one day to complete. and depending on wind direction, this controlled burn may have lingering smoke effects. Interior burning and residual smoke can be expected for several days following ignition unless precipitation occurs.

Location: An approximately 300-acre section of the Porters Mill burn area will be burned in preparation for burning the larger unit later this spring. The area is located four miles southeast of Hot Springs and four miles north of Douthat State Park.
Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists, The Nature Conservancy, and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, among others, will conduct the burn on Monday, March 21. The ignition-phase will be concluded before the end of the day. The fire will be monitored for several days and damp conditions and forecasted rain are expected to extinguish the fire later in the week.
Purpose: Prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape. Safety is the Forest Service’s top priority, and Forest fire managers will conduct prescribed burns only under appropriate weather conditions.
Additional Information and Road/Trail Closures: The Salt Pond Ridge Trail (Forest Trail 620) and Brushy Ridge Rd (Forest Road 1901) will be closed. Expect to see increased truck traffic on Limekiln Road (Forest Road 194). Smoke will be visible from Douthat Road (State Route 629).
