California Interagency Incident Management Team 15 (CAIIMT15) assumed command of the Washburn Fire yesterday evening at 7pm.  CAIIMT15 is led by Incident Commander Jim Harris.

Highway 41 Reopening- Highway 41 (Wawona Rd.) has reopened as of 6:00 am on Saturday, July 23 . Visitors are permitted  to travel  from the South Entrance to Yosemite Valley. Reservations are still required.

Washburn Fire Update- The fire is burning within an area rated as “Exceptional Drought”, the most severe rating issued by the U.S. Drought Monitor. This rating is caused by several years of persistent drought and a year that has received approximately 50% of normal rainfall. These drought conditions have left dead fuels in and around the fire area at record dry levels. Due to the hard work of fire resources, most of the fire perimeter is holding within control lines.

Today, activity is expected to be isolated to the interior portions of the fire as the extremely dry ground fuels continue to burn themselves out with limited threat to the control lines. Hotshot and helitack crews will continue to staff the remote and rugged sections of the fire along the south fork of the Merced River and the portion above Iron Creek. A persistent warm and dry weather pattern will remain in place with high temperatures in the upper 80s, minimum humidity of 15%, and afternoon westerly winds around 15 mph over the upper elevations.

Oak Fire- A new fire has started outside of  Yosemite National Park boundaries called the Oak Fire.  The Oak Fire started on Carstens Road near Highway 140, in the Midpines area of Mariposa County, cause is under investigation.  CAL FIRE and US Forest Service- Sierra National Forest are responding unified command.  For more information call 844-MMU-FIRE (844-668-3473) or visit https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2022/7/22/oak-fire/

Weather/Fire Conditions:
The fire continues to burn slowly in thick loads of dead and down fuels on the eastern edge of the fire. Fire fighters work to gain containment by holding hand line they have constructed south of Iron Creek drainage. There have been no spot fires while they hold this line. The contingency line around Mount Raymond is proving to hold its integrity as we monitor the fire and witness movement west along the line. Mop up and patrol along Wawona Rd (Yosemite’s Highway 41) as well as Mariposa grove has been successful as our crews begin the pull some of the hose they have laid in the initial attack of the Washburn Fire. The forecast predicts high 80’s with humidity getting up to 26% with winds pushing the smoke west and lingering in any drainages For a detailed look at smoke conditions: Washburn Fire Smoke Report

Weather/Fire Conditions: Firefighters continue to patrol and perform mop up operations along the western and south western portion of the fire. Patrol and mop up require our fire personnel to sift through the burned areas with hand tools in search of hot spots in order to extinguish them. This allows for residual smoke to dissipate as well as maintaining control of the containment line. Our crews continue to build and hold contingency line around Mount Raymond and hand crews dig hand line around Iron Creek drainage in hopes to gain containment on the eastern side of the incident. This fire area contains large amounts of both live and dead trees, high mortality from drought and associated beetle kill in 2016, as well as significant blow down producing heavy fuels from the winter’s Mono Wind storm. Temperatures will reach the high 80’s and relative humidity is predicted to be in the 25-28% range. Expect moderate smoke activity moving west due to the amount of heavy fuels burning in the eastern most percentage of the fire. Higher elevations will remain moderately clear while down drainage winds will provide for smoke accumulation in valleys. For a detailed look at smoke conditions: Washburn Fire Smoke Report

FINAL Daily Update for Middle Tanana Complex July 19 2022

Related Incident: Middle Tanana Complex
Publication Type: News

Highlights: This will be the FINAL daily update for the Middle Tanana Complex unless notable activity occurs. Any future updates will be made available on AK Fire Info and the Alaska DNR Facebook page.

On behalf of Incident Commander Josh Bransford and the Northern Rockies Type 3 team, we would like to thank the communities for their ongoing support and patience. The relationships made between each Incident Management Team (IMT), the community, and cooperating partners is invaluable to our operations and have made the efforts on this incident a success.

Operations: As of Monday, all fires within the Middle Tanana Complex are unstaffed with firefighters stagging at the Incident Command Post (ICP) in Delta Junction. Crews conducted a ground reconnaissance east of Big Delta to monitor the smoke activity on the South Fork Fire. Reconnaissance flights will take place today, Tuesday, to make assessments on structures near the Porcupine Fire and to monitor fire activity on the South Fork Fire. The IMT is currently building a plan in preparation for backhaul operations. Backhaul includes the removal of hose, pumps, sprinklers and any other equipment used to support crews during fire suppression efforts. These operations will not take place until the fire area has received a significant amount of rain to breach the permafrost and be considered a season ending event.

With the decrease in fire activity, a portion of resources are being released. This reduction in resources assigned to the complex will continue over the upcoming days with the exception of select crews and miscellaneous overhead remaining on site to respond as needed.

Evacuations: Current evacuations in place are for a READY status only. This covers residents and cabins throughout the following areas: Salcha, Goodpaster, Shaw Creek, Central Creek and the Pogo Mine area. For the most up to date information, visit https://tinyurl.com/FNSBEvacMap for details about evacuations within the North Star Borough.

Weather: Forecasted weather should bring temperatures cooler than the average, reaching into the low 60s. Winds will be light with gusts up to 10 mph. Expect to see scattered showers in the area.

Smoke: Minimal smoke is visible on the Yukon Creek and South Fork Fires. This activity should decrease as more precipitation is received across the area. Visit https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/fba6a113 to view the FINAL Smoke Outlook for Interior Alaska for July 19-20th.

Bean Complex Update August 2 2022

Related Incident: Bean Complex
Publication Type: News

Bean Complex Wildfire Fact Sheet

Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.

All seven fires on the Bean Complex are now unstaffed and will be monitored by air. Equipment and supplies are being hauled from Manley Hot Springs to the BLM Alaska Fire Service Cache in Fairbanks. Cleaning of facilities in Manley Hot Springs is underway before they’ll return to regular use as fire personnel depart. Rain showers are expected throughout the day on Tuesday and into the evening with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Fire activity remains smoldering and minimal. Subsurface hotspots remained scattered and are expected to continue to smolder until larger amounts of rain extinguish the fires.

The dispatch center and fire cache at BLM AFS facilities in Fairbanks remain busy as field work gets close to completion on the Bean Complex. Dispatch has a critical role in firefighting operations by keeping track of people and connecting resources on the ground and in the air.  Fire personnel stay in constant contact with dispatch via the radio and provide updated location information. In return, dispatchers provide firefighters with safety check-ins, weather reports and details on operations.  As firefighting operations wrap up on the Bean Complex, dispatchers put in long hours arranging flights and other means of transportation to safely deliver everyone back home. This task has been challenging with the large number of fires in Alaska this season. The fire cache is another facility that continues to be busy as the fire slows down. Equipment and supplies like pumps and hoses are stored and ready for fires when they are needed.
