Moose (July 17):  The fire is being updated separately and can be found on Inciweb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8249/

Woodtick (2 fires) (July 14):  The lightning fires are located approximately six (6) miles west northwest of the Meyers Cove in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the Middle Fork Ranger District.  The fires total 25 acres and are burning in lodgepole pine and fir.  Aircraft continues to drop water on the fire as weather allows.  Two (2) Type I crews and two (2) Type I helicopters are assigned to the fire.

Wolf Fang Fire (July 13):  The lightning fire is located approximately four (4) miles northeast of the confluence of Big Creek and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the North Fork Ranger District.  The 75 acre fire burning in spruce and fir is located in steep, rugged terrain.  Risk to responders and public safety are the top priorities for the Wolf Fang Fire.   Due to the inaccessibility of the terrain and snag hazards, we are monitoring this fire utilizing the Middle Fork Peak lookout and aviation daily.

Banner Fire (July 3):  The 15 acre human caused fire located approximately three (3) miles north of Banner Summit on Highway 21 was called controlled on July 10.  Resources continue to patrol the fire.

To date, there have been 14 wildfires reported on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Weather:  RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FOR THE AREA FROM 1 PM TO 9 PM THIS EVENING.  Dry air is moving into the area this morning along with very strong winds.  This afternoon expect west winds 20 to 35 mph with gust of 40 to 50 mph.  Locally higher gusts over 50 mph are possible, especially along peaks and ridgelines.  Winds are expected to taper down near sunset.  Dry conditions will last the rest of the week, but winds will not be as strong as today.

The forest is asking visitors to be aware of the HIGH fire danger for the Salmon-Challis National Forest.  Ensure your campfire is dead out.  If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave!  One Less Spark Means One Less Wildfire.

Nationally, there are 17 uncontained large fires being managed under a full suppression strategy and 108 large fires managed under a strategy other than full suppression.

1148 Fire Update

July 23, 2022 10:00 a.m.

1148 Fire Stats:

Size: 457 Acres

Containment: 50%

Location: 15 miles SW of Graham, TX

Start Date: July 18, 2021

Cause: Unknown

Resources Assigned:

•     Total personnel: 54

•     Engines: 14

•     Dozers: 5

The Southern Area Blue, Type-I Incident Management Team assumed command of the 1148 Fire at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Current Status: No additional fire growth occurred on the 1148 Fire yesterday. Two task forces are assigned to continue mopping up on any remaining fire. Those resources continue monitoring the entire perimeter, as well as interior heat sources, as progress moves towards a full containment status. Firefighting efforts were also assisted by light precipitation near the fire a day ago, increasing relative humidity which helps decrease burning conditions. The task forces operating on the 1148 Fire are also responsible for initial attacking new fires which may start within their vicinity.

Fire Weather: Temperatures will again be near 100 degrees, with a chance of cloud cover over the 1148 Fire which could moderate temperatures and increase relative humidity. No precipitation is expected, but nearby thunderstorms may produce outflow winds that could affect the fire area. Winds out of the south to southeast will occur at 8-12 mph with gusts up to 18 mph. Relative humidity will be 15-20%, which is still low and fuels on the ground remain extremely dry.

Closures/Evacuations: There are currently no evacuation orders in place.

Safety and Notifications: Personal responsibility and prevention of the next ignition is of utmost importance in preventing the next wildfire. Refrain from parking vehicles on dry grass and make sure all power equipment is in good working condition. Do your part to help our firefighters.

1148 Fire Update
July 22, 2022 10:00 a.m.

1148 Fire Stats:
Size: 457 Acres
Containment: 50%
Location: 15 miles SW of
Graham, TX
Start Date: July 18, 2021

Resources Assigned
Total personnel: 74

The Southern Area Blue, Type I Incident Management Team assumed command of the 1148 Fire at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022

Current Status: Significant progress has been made in the past 24 hours, with little to no fire activity observed across the 1148 fire. Firefighting efforts were also assisted by light precipitation in the fire vicinity, increasing relative humidity which helps decrease burning conditions.
Despite minimal observed fire behavior, elevated potential for fire activity is present, as fuels surrounding the fire's perimeter remain extremely dry and at an increased risk of ignition. Firefighters will remain diligent as the probability of ignition remains high as does the potential for extreme fire behavior if activity increases.
To minimize any potential fire activity, crews will continue mopping up existing hot spots and strengthening and improving existing containment lines on all sides of the fire. Engines will continue working near structures and along FM 1148 to minimize any chance of fire activity in the area.

Fire Weather:
Light precipitation was observed across the 1148 fire. A 20% chance of precipitation remains across the region into the afternoon and tapers off as the day progresses. Hot and dry weather will continue for the foreseeable future, with daytime temperatures maxing out near 100 degrees. Winds out of the southeast will occur at 9-12 mph with gusts up to 18 mph. Humidity recovery has increased in recent days, with tonight’s humidity recovering to near 60%.

Closures/Evacuations:
There are currently no evacuation orders in place.

1148 Fire Daily Update for July 21 2022

Related Incident: 1148 Fire
Publication Type: News

July 21, 2022
1:30 pm

Size: 500 acres
Containment: 45%
Date Started: July 18, 2022
Cause: Human Caused - Roadside Start

Last night a hand crew and several engines extensively mopped up the northern ridge line, working to put out any heat they found near the fire line. This work is instrumental in containing this fire, any section of line with heat still in it is a potential for fire to get out of the containment lines. Engines also continued to work around structures and FM 1148, double checking everything making sure that there is no heat left around to threaten structures.Today, crews are going to continue mop up. All resources on the fire are working to meet the goal of containing this fire. Resources are working around the whole fire continuing to mop up. The largest focus will be the northern ridge line, where the largest amount of heat has been identified. Last night an Infrared flight flew over the fire and provided an excellent map for ground resources to seek and destroy these heats. Tonight, resources will continue to mop up the perimeter again.Today a heavy equipment task force will be released from the fire to return to its base in Merkel, Texas to be available for response to new starts. Additionally, there will also be an Initial Attack group established here at the fire to be available for new starts across North Texas. Aerial resources are standing by to assist here and other fires across the state.

Weather

Last night storms moved through the region, providing scattered moisture to a small number of locations. However, there were also numerous lightning strikes that can potentially start new fires.

Temperatures will be a little cooler today, topping out at a cool 99 degrees. Humidity will also be higher, falling to somewhere between 25 and 35%. There is a small chance for rain this morning, and more thunderstorms this afternoon. Winds will be erratic around these storms, potentially causing increased fire behavior.

Resources

Currently there are 131 personnel assigned to this incident. This number does not include the many volunteers that are on scene assisting their neighbors and community. Resources will begin to be released from this fire as conditions allow and prepare for the next fire.

Damages and Injuries

We have confirmed five homes have been destroyed as well as five outbuildings. There have been two firefighters with minor heat injuries. Both firefighters were treated by paramedics on scene

1148 Fire Daily Update for July 20 2022

Related Incident: 1148 Fire
Publication Type: News

July 20, 2022
12:00 pm

Size: 500 acres
Containment: 15%
Date Started: July 18, 2022
Cause: Under investigation

Last night dozers and a handcrew were able to complete a fuel break along the north side of this fire. This line connects from the western side of the fire on FM 1148 to the northeastern corner on FM1148. These resources as well as multiple engines assigned to night shift began to mop up the northern edge along this dozer line. Additionally, resources continued to patrol and mop up along FM 1148 to ensure there was no further growth to the south.Today, crews are going to begin extensive mop up. All areas of the fire are still holding lots of heat and occasional active flames. To ensure that this fire stays within this box any heat with 100 feet of the edge will have to be extinguished. This type of work requires firefighters to walk across the edge of the fire, continually scanning to identify any area that still has heat in it. This heat can be as obvious as active flames, or as small as an occasional puff of smoke. Resources will continue to patrol around the perimeter until they don’t find any heat long this perimeter. Night shifts will continue tonight with resources taking advantage of lower temperatures to get lots of beneficial work done.

Aerial resources are standing by to assist here and other fires across the state.

Weather: Today will feature exceedingly high temperatures forecasted to reach 110 degrees. Humidity is expected to reach a low of 19% with moderate winds coming out of the southwest. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for much Texas including the fire location. New starts in the area may occur and have the potential for rapid growth. Fire resources will be monitoring the local area in support of the local fire departments.

Evacuations and Closures: Initially, 50 homes were evacuated. A voluntary evacuation remains in place for the fire area. A shelter has been established at the West Lake Chapel. Donations are also being accepted at this location. FM 1148 is still closed at Chapel Road at this time.

Damages and Injuries: Yesterday there were two minor heat injuries. Both firefighters were treated on scene and released, they will be back at work today. Five homes and five outbuildings have been confirmed destroyed by the fire.

1148 Fire Update for July 19 1200 PM

Related Incident: 1148 Fire
Publication Type: News

July 19, 2022
12:00 pm

Size: 500 acres
Containment: 10%
Date Started: July 18, 2022
Cause: Under investigation

Last night resources worked to mop up the eastern edge of the fire around many structures. Moving carefully through the area they put out as many of the hotspots as they could find to reduce the risk to the homes inside the perimeter of the fire. Additionally, a handcrew was able to conduct a burn operation safely to remove unburned fuels along the southwest section of the fire and better secure that edge. Last night there was an Infrared flight that came over and mapped the perimeter of the fire to assist crews today as they work to construct line. Today, firefighters will be working to secure the perimeter of the fire, trying to hold it in place during the expected hot and dry conditions. Around the northern edge of the fire there will be 10 dozers working to construct containment line and access for engines to move completely around the perimeter. As this line is constructed engines will be searching for hot areas and putting these out to help secure the boundary. This work will take a significant amount of time and residents can expect to see smoke rising. Along 1148 there will be lots of engines mopping up the edge of the burn and protecting structures. This includes working around structures away from the fire edge in case the fire jumps containment lines and continues to grow. Night shifts will continue tonight with resources taking advantage of lower temperatures to get beneficial work done. Aerial resources are standing by to assist here and other fires across the state.

Weather Today will feature a weather pattern very similar to yesterday’s weather. Temperatures are expected to reach 106 with humidity expected to drop below 20%. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for much of this area including the fire location.

Damages and Injuries: No injuries from either the public or first responders have been reported. Five outbuildings and 5 homes have been reported destroyed by the fire.
