Publication Type: News

The inversion lifted yesterday afternoon dropping the humidity to around 18% and increased fire behavior. The fire continues to be most active in the Martindale Lakes area where single tree torching can be observed. The type 1 helicopter was ordered to do bucket drops on the eastern flank of the fire near Red Spar Mine. This was a precautionary move that cooled things down helping to prevent spot fires. Today firefighters will continue to mop up and patrol the fires edge along Camas and West Camas where able to do so safely. The helicopter may be up in the air yet again to assist firefighters in areas with greater heat sources.

Weather: A low pressure trough will advance southeast through the region today with attending showers and thunderstorms advancing across mainly the Sawtooth and Salmon River Mountains this morning into the south zone with a more organized line of convection by early this afternoon. Most of this activity will be accompanied by wetting rains and elevated daytime humidity thus precluding the issuance of any Red Flag Warnings. Drier and more stable conditions will trail across the region tonight and Sunday. Look for much hotter and drier conditions returning to the region Monday into Tuesday.

Evacuations: Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office has announced an evacuation Status for residents at Camas Creek.  They are now in a GO status, which means immediate evacuation is necessary.  Residents at Castle Creek and Sliver Creek, including Ramshorn Creek are in READY status, meaning they should prepare for the possibility of evacuation.  Latest updates for Moose Creek Fire and Wood Tick updated 8:49am 07/25 | Lemhi County, ID (lemhicountyidaho.org)

Winds began to pick up on the Woodtick fire yesterday at around 1200 pm, this increased fire behavior and dried out fuels. Winds were generally out of the Southwest, gusting to 30 at times. A couple of embers reportedly crossed Camas Creek where firefighters remained ready, and no spot fires were reported. Fire crews coordinated efforts along with help from a firehawk helicopter to ensure that the fire remained on the West side of Camas Creek. Structure protection is still in place and firefighters will continue to stay engaged to minimize damage to any private property.

Today firefighters will continue to mop up along Camas and West Camas where able to do so safely. The helicopter may be up in the air yet again today to assist firefighters in areas with greater heat sources.

Weather:
A mostly dry west-southwest flow aloft is anticipated today with isolated thunderstorm activity most likely across the southern
portion of the Dispatch Area. Locally breezy winds are also possible in the Salmon Breaks region this afternoon. A low pressure trough positioned along the Canadian border will dig south and east late tonight promoting early morning showers and isolated thunderstorm activity. Scattered thunderstorm activity is possible in the afternoon hours which may necessitate the issuance of a Red Flag highlight after coordination with dispatch and IMETs.

Gusty southwest winds will develop across the Salmon-Challis NF today as a low-pressure system moves slowly east through western
Canada. As a result, a Red Flag Warning has been issued from noon to 9 PM MDT this evening. Isolated to Scattered thunderstorm activity is also anticipated primarily through the Mackay to Dillon corridor. The low will continue to move east Friday while a trough lingers along the Canadian border. Breezy southwest winds will redevelop Friday afternoon resulting in near Red Flag conditions.

Fire behavior picked up most of the day as temperatures started to climb and humidity was reported as low 13%. Firefighters are still only reporting smoldering, creeping and an occasional single tree torching.

A recon flight was ordered over the fire yesterday reporting increased activity in the Martindale Lakes area. Yesterday, Division X completed rebab on the Myers cove flats, and continued to secure line down to Camas Ranch. Division C did a burn out operation that brought fire down to the creek from Camas Ranch to Red Spar mine. Operations went well with no spots across the drainage, and high amount of fuels consumption.

Woodtick Fire behavior was calm yesterday due to the cooler temperatures and higher humidities. Cloud cover filled the skies all day over the incident, however no measurable rain was reported. The fire continues to creep and smolder with an occasional dust devil due to instability.

Firefighters continue to mop up and secure the fires edge around the Camas Creek area. Some hand ignition was continued in order to burn any remaining surface fuels that could reignite later. Crews continued patrols on the West side of Camas Creek around structures and adjacent areas. No further spot fires were reported today.

Aviation assets that are assigned to this fire were loaned out to assist with initial attack of other incidents in the local area.

The increase in acreage was over a two day period having gotten more accurate mapping.

Weather: Today, lingering moisture coupled with daytime heating will aide in isolated thunderstorm development. Increasing southwest flow aloft Thursday will bring near Red Flag wind gusts to the region with marginal daytime humidities as well as wider coverage of isolated thunderstorm activity. More monsoon thunderstorm activity is expected Friday and Saturday.

We are unable to update the size of the fire and maps today, mapping flights were unavailable due to weather.

Firefighters worked to secure the edge of the fire along Camas Creek yesterday. This included some hand ignition with drip torches to burn any remaining surface fuels that could reignite later. The fire area experienced periods of light precipitation which helped to further secure the fires edge and assist with mop up efforts.

Crews continued patrols on the West side of Camas Creek around structures and adjacent areas. No further spot fires were reported today and the couple that were caught yesterday were checked to ensure that they’re out. Firefighters are encouraged by the expected cooler temperatures and potential precipitation, and confident they can secure the edge in a timely manner.

Fire behavior was mostly calm yesterday with backing, creeping, and smoldering.  Flame lengths were reported under two feet. occasionally a pocket of surface fuels burned hot enough to produce single tree torching.

Weather: Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop over the dispatch area today. Best chances of wetting rain will be over zone 476. Stronger storms could produce locally heavy rain and gusty outflow winds. Humidity will be much improved from yesterday. Afternoon isolated thunderstorms return again on Wednesday with humidity generally higher than what they've been over the past week.

Daily Update for August 1 2022

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

The increase in acreage over the last two days has been due to a backburn operation where firefighters are using aerial ignition in an effort to bring the fire off of the steep slopes. The backburn is bringing the western flank of the fires edge down to Camas Creek. This will allow us to secure the edge with less risk to our firefighters.

Thunderstorms developed and passed over the fire area late last night. Outflow winds created a couple of spot fires that firefighters were successful in catching with the help of a type 1 helicopter.

The operation has been slow and methodical as to moderate fire intensity and protect resources. One more day of ignitions may be needed to secure the edge properly. This may be utilizing the helicopter in conjunction with hand lighting as needed. Smoke from the Woodtick Fire may be visible for the next few days.

Weather: Isolated thunderstorms will develop over the dispatch area around 1400 hours this afternoon. Storms will mainly be dry in nature today, but thunderstorms may continue through the night with better rainfall potential. Zone 476 will see increasing chances of a wetting rain tonight and tomorrow, but thunderstorm coverage may become more scattered tomorrow afternoon. As a result of the rain coverage, humidity may only bottom out around 25 to 30 percent or higher. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are in the forecast for the rest of the week.

Evacuation Information: Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office has announced an evacuation Status for residents at Camas Creek.

Woodtick Fire Daily Update July 31 2022

Related Incident:

Yesterday, firefighters decided to take advantage of upcoming favorable weather and started to implement a firing plan using aerial ignition. Considering the safety and exposure to our firefighters, this backburn operation will bring the fires edge down to an area where control lines were already prepared and firefighters stand ready to engage with suppression tactics.

This operation is expected to last at least one more day.
Although safety is our top priority, limiting resource damage is also a major concern. Using the helicopter, we’re able to monitor fire behavior and adjust tactics in order to limit as much resource damage as possible.

Smoke from the Woodtick Fire may be visible for the next few days.

Weather:
Another hot day is in store for the area today. There is a slight chance of afternoon dry thunderstorms that may produce
strong outflow winds. Humidity will trend upwards Monday night and Tuesday. This will increase chances of showers and
thunderstorms. Coverage will generally be isolated on Monday evening, and scattered around Tuesday afternoon. These will be a mix of wet and dry storms. The rest of the work week will be breezy with wind gusts 20 to 25 mph outside of thunderstorms.

Firefighters are planning to utilize some roads and river bottoms.  Yesterday they cleared brush to improve roadways as well as cleared entry points along rivers and creeks.  These entry points will be identified for crossing as escape routes, as well as pump sites for hose lays if needed.  Firefighters continue to remain poised and ready should the fire spread unexpectedly.

Weather:  A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 12pm to 10pm MDT for dry thunderstorms.
Another weak trough will pass through the northern Great Basin today. Once again, thunderstorms will be triggered by this trough and the unstable atmosphere. The coverage of thunderstorms will vary from isolated on the west side to scattered on the east side of the Forest. During the late evening, skies will start to clear, leading to a cooler start to Saturday morning compared. The strong sunshine under clear skies on Saturday and Sunday will lead to hot afternoon temperatures and very low humidity. A monsoonal push is still expected to bring back moisture by Tuesday.

After multiple attempts to fight this fire direct, firefighters determined that the risk was ultimately too great, and the Forest changed strategies to a combination of “point protection” and “confine and contain”.  The Woodtick fire has had favorable conditions the last few days thus resulting in a moderated fire intensity with minimal growth.  Fire behavior has been reported as creeping and smoldering with some isolated torching, resulting in short range spotting.

Having completed structure protection measures, yesterday firefighters constructed and strengthened control lines in areas that connect roads and take advantage of other natural features that include rivers, creeks and rock outcroppings.

The Fire held a small community meeting last night for the communities that are being immediately affected by the Woodtick Fire.  Landowners hand a chance to speak with the Agency Administrator as well as the Incident Commander for the fire.  Landowners had a chance to ask any lingering questions that they had and left the meeting feeling confident and appreciative for everything taking place on the fire.

Evacuation Information: Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office has announced an evacuation Status for residents at Camas Creek.

Weather:  A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 12pm to 10pm MDT for dry thunderstorms.
Low pressure moving through eastern Idaho today will trigger showers and thunderstorms.  The coverage will reach scattered levels and the Red Flag Warning remains in effect, with most of the storms being "dry”.  More showers and thunderstorms develop for Friday afternoon and evening, and these have a slightly lower chance of reaching scattered coverage, so the Red Flag conditions may continue. Saturday will have clearing skies and then warming and drying return on Sunday.
