Operación de tácticas incendiarias ayudo a la supresión del Incendio Creek

MERLIN, Ore. – Desde el miércoles, el confinamiento del Incendio Rum Creek a aumentado de 1 a 27 porciento, la mayor parte debido a las tácticas exitosas de las operaciones de quema y por la construcción de líneas directas. Sobre el flanco suroeste del incendio, los bomberos han logrado limpiar hasta unos 50 pies amortiguados entre las líneas de control recientemente quemadas. Después de haber extinguido dos espacios en llamas, las tácticas de patrullaje expandieron la limpieza desde unos 200 a 300 pies alrededor de la comunidad de Galice. Limpieza, es el proceso de extinguir o remover material quemado cerca de las líneas de control, talando enganches y zanjeando troncos para prevenir que estos rueden libremente después de que el área fue quemada. La cima entre 60 y 80 grados en el canon del rio y cercana a los drenajes hacen del zanjeo una parte clave para prevenir que rocas y troncos rueden hacia abajo y libre de suelos inestables. Por la tarde, con cielos despejados, permitió que los aviones de ala fija y helicópteros ayudaran a los bomberos en el terreno, manejar operaciones de tacticas de fuego hasta horas altas de la tarde. En los próximos días, los bomberos se enfocarán en conectar las líneas de contingencia desde Hog Creek hacia Quartz Creek sobre el lado Este del incendio.

En general, el día de hoy, el fuego se propago en menos de 400 acres. El fuego continuara ardiendo activamente en las horas de la noche, particularmente, entre Ennis Riffle y Galice Boat Ramp, en donde el incendio ha estado quemándose hacia la costa al oriente del Rogue River.

Se espera que los vientos se calmen al incrementarse la humedad relativa en las horas tempranas del día de mañana, reduciendo el progreso del incendio arrastrándose y ardiendo hasta que se levante el fenómeno de inversión en el clima.

 Tactical firing operations aid Rum Creek Fire suppression

MERLIN, Ore. – Since Wednesday, containment of the Rum Creek Fire has grown from 1 percent to 27 percent, largely due to successful tactical firing operations and direct line construction.

On the southwest flank of the fire, crews are mopping up a 50-foot buffer between recently burned control lines. Tactical patrols are expanding mop-up from 200 to 300 feet around the community of Galice after two spot fires were extinguished Friday.

Mop-up is the process of extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines, felling snags, and trenching logs to prevent them from rolling after an area has burned. The 60 to 80 degree slopes in the river canyon and nearby drainages make trenching a key part of preventing logs and rocks from rolling free of unstable soils.

Clearer skies this afternoon allowed fixed wing aircraft and helicopters to help firefighters on the ground manage tactical firing operations into the evening hours. In the coming days, firefighters aim to connect contingency lines from Hog Creek to Quartz Creek on the east side of the fire.

Overall fire spread was less than 400 acres today. The fire will continue burning actively into the night, particularly between Ennis Riffle and the Galice Boat Ramp, where the fire has burned down to the eastern shore of the Rogue River.

Winds are expected to die down as relative humidity increases in the early morning hours, reducing fire progression to creeping and smoldering until the morning inversion lifts.

“Overall, firefighters have made great progress controlling the Rum Creek Fire, especially in areas with difficult topography,” said Eric Riener, incident commander trainee for Northwest 13 IMT.

Weather: Friday, the high in Medford was 98F, 10 degrees higher than the seasonal average of 88F. Temperatures will remain in the low to mid 80s through Monday, peaking at 90 Tuesday, with continued higher relative humidity.

El jueves, el incendio avanzo hacia la línea de contención cerca de Grave Creek. Los bomberos iniciaron estrategias de operaciones de fuego en el área con el objetivo de reducir la posibilidad de que las llamas crucen la línea del mismo. Utilizando drones (The Unmanned Aerial System/UAS) se dejaron caer encendedores para incendiar laderas que no han sido afectadas por el incendio cercanas a Ennis Riffle y con el fin de reducir los espacios de emanación de calor a través del Rogue River. 

Se dieron operaciones de quema controlada sobre el eje suroeste del incendio situado entre Mount Peavine y Bear Gulch. Los bomberos trabajan arduamente para eliminar posibles zonas de emanación de calor sobre el eje del área incendiada. Se continua con las estrategias de quema al lado norte hacia el Rogue River y sobre el lado oeste de el incendio con la finalidad de asegurar esta sección del incendio.  El Incendio Rum Creek logro mantenerse durante el frente frio 

MERLIN, Ore. – En altas horas de la noche de ayer, un frente frio penetro el Incendio Rum Creek, acompañado de ráfagas de viento. Se presentaron vientos más intensos sobre el eje y los drenajes con una alineación Oeste-Este, con datos de ráfagas alcanzando la 25 mph. El fuego permaneció entre las líneas primarias del incendio, a excepción del surgimiento de dos espacios de fuego que fueron localizados en las cercanías de Crawford House por Galice y al Oeste de McKnabe Creek. Los bomberos lograron atacar estos dos fuegos y mantenerlos bajo control y de un tamaño pequeño. El día de hoy, los aviones utilizaran imágenes infrarrojas para buscar espacios adicionales de incendios. Actualmente, la mayor parte de los acres quemados sumados al incendio son el resultado de las operaciones de estrategia incendiaria en el interior de las líneas de control. Cuando los bomberos encienden de manera cuidadosa el material de combustión en el interior de las líneas de fuego, ganan mayor control sobre el terreno y detienen la propagación del incendio. Así mismo, estas operaciones refuerzan las líneas directas de fuego. Los bomberos están utilizando quemas a mano con la ayuda de antorchas de goteo y las quemas aéreas realizadas por el Sistema Aéreo de drones. Usualmente, las estrategias incendiarias resultan en una quema de baja intensidad, consumiendo el material de combustión en el terreno sin la afectación de los árboles. 
 

El equipo de bomberos, el día de ayer, completó operaciones incendiarias cerca de Grave Creek, conectándose a otra sección critica del perímetro del incendio. A medida de lo posible, los bomberos están excavando líneas a mano directamente sobre el eje del incendio, combinadas con estrategias de quema con el fin de detener el avance del fuego. En otras áreas, en donde el incendio es más intenso o existe mayor cantidad de material de combustión, las líneas directas a mano no son suficientes para detener el incendio. En este caso, los bomberos utilizan líneas indirectas construidas por bulldozers y los caminos existentes como líneas contención. Al oeste, los bomberos han completado estrategias de quema sobre la mitad de la línea entre Mount Peavine y el Norte de Rogue River. Se continuo con esta labor hasta la medianoche del viernes cuando la humedad relativa (RH) se incrementó. A este punto, material de combustión tales como grama y arbustos han absorbido suficiente humedad que no se quemaran fácilmente. El día de hoy, si las condiciones climáticas lo permiten, se continuará con la quema controlada. 
 

El personal de la oficina Estatal del Alguacil de Incendios, continúan limpiando los espacios remanentes de fuego cercanos a viviendas y a la vez patrullando las áreas a lo largo de Galice Road buscando posibles espacios de emanación de calor causados por las brasas acarreadas por el viento. Los bomberos se encuentran evaluando la infraestructura y planeamiento en los vecindarios de Crow Road, Hugo Road, Quartz Creek Road y Picket Creek Road ubicados al suroeste del incendio.

 Actividad del Incendio Rum Creek podría moderarse por el frente frio 

MERLIN, Ore. – El día de hoy, un frente frio penetro el Incendio Rum Creek, con la posibilidad de incrementar el crecimiento del incendio. Este frente frio traerá temperaturas mas bajas y humedades relativas mas altas para los próximos periodos operacionales.

Esta tarde, empezó a disminuir la presencia de humo, permitiendo utilizar el recurso aéreo al terminarse el día. En el lado oeste del incendio, con la ayuda de reconocimientos aéreos, los bomberos capturaron una mancha de fuego cercana a Crawford House. Los helicópteros también irrigaron el drenaje de Rum Creek en donde el fuego se ha movido en el interior de Wildcat Creek. Fueron completadas las operaciones incendiarias desde Galice hasta Mount Peavine. Se continuará con las operaciones incendiarias planeadas desde el Norte de Mount Peavine, asegurando de esta manera la línea de fuego hacia el Rogue River.

Al norte del rio y al oeste de Grave Creek, los bomberos están construyendo líneas indirectas de contingencia entre Mt. Reuben y por donde sucedió el Incendio Dad Creek. El incendio sigue arrastrándose y manteniéndose hacia abajo de la línea de Stratton Creek y sobre el lado Este. Las operaciones incendiarias hacia el noreste fueron completadas al sur de Lower Grave Creek Road y el Rogue River. 

La estructura de bomberos OSFM evaluó aproximadamente 500 viviendas y aplico medidas de protección de estructuras desde envolver las estructuras a irrigación a remover vegetación donde es apropiado. Así mismo, los bomberos están removiendo arboles peligrosos y a la vez monitoreando y patrullando alrededor de la comunidad de Galice. 

Condiciones climáticas: Para los próximos días, se esperan altas temperaturas en los 80 grados combinadas con vientos ligeros, darán como resultado un comportamiento moderado del incendio.

Rum Creek Fire Holds Through Cold Front

MERLIN, Ore. – A cold front moved past the Rum Creek Fire late on Friday, bringing gusty winds. The winds were strongest on the ridges and in drainages with a west-east alignment, with gusts recorded up to 25 mph. The fire stayed within the primary fire lines except for two spot fires, near Crawford House by Galice and west of McKnabe Creek. Firefighters attacked these spot fires and kept them small. Today, aircraft will use infrared imaging to search for additional spot fires.

Currently, most acreage gains on the fire are from strategic firing operations inside the primary control lines. By carefully igniting remaining fuels inside fire lines, firefighters have more control over the location and rate of fire spread. These operations strengthen the direct fire lines. Crews are using hand ignition with drip torches and aerial ignitions by the Unmanned Aerial System. Strategic firings usually result in a low-intensity burn, consuming the ground fuels but not the trees.

Fire personnel completed a strategic firing operation near Grave Creek yesterday, tying in another critical section of the fire perimeter. Direct lines are holding the fire, restricting spread further to the east. Where possible, firefighters are using lines hand-dug directly on the edge of the fire, combined with strategic firings, to stop advancement. In other areas where the fire is burning more intensely or fuels are more abundant, a direct hand line is unlikely to hold. In these areas, firefighters are using indirect lines constructed by dozers and existing roads as containment lines. Fire personnel are mopping up residual heat near the fire lines on all areas of the fire.

On the west, firefighters have completed strategic burning on over half of the line between Mount Peavine and the Rogue River to the north. This work continued until midnight Friday when the relative humidity (RH) increased. At that point, fine fuels like grasses and brush absorbed enough moisture and would not burn well. Firing will continue today when fuel and weather conditions are appropriate.

Office of State Fire Marshal personnel continue to mop up remaining hot spots near structures, and are patrolling areas along Galice Road for possible spot fires caused by wind-blown embers. Firefighters are working on structure assessment and pre-planning in the Crow Road, Hugo Road, Quartz Creek Road and Picket Creek Road neighborhoods southeast of the fire.

  Cold front should moderate Rum Creek Fire activity 

MERLIN, Ore. – Friday a cold front moved into the Rum Creek Fire, increasing the possibility of fire growth. The cold front passage will  bring cooler temperatures and higher humidity for the next few operational periods. 
 

Smoke began clearing this afternoon, allowing aviation support to resume. On the west side of the fire, crews caught a spot fire near Crawford House with help from aerial reconnaissance. Helicopters were also dropping water in the Rum Creek drainage where fire has moved into Wildcat Creek.  
 

Firing operations were completed from Galice to Mount Peavine. Planned firing operations will continue from Mount Peavine north, securing the fireline to the Rogue River. North of the river, west of Grave Creek, crews are building indirect contingency lines between Mt. Reuben and the Dad Creek Fire scar.  
 

The fire is still creeping down the line of Stratton Creek on the east side and currently holding. Firing operations to the northeast were completed south to Lower Grave Creek Road and the Rogue River.  
 

OSFM structure crews have assessed approximately 500 homes and applied structure protection measures ranging from structure wrapping to sprinklers to vegetation removal where appropriate. They are also removing hazard trees while monitoring and patrolling around the community of Galice.  
 

Weather: Highs in the 80s combined with lighter winds will moderate fire behavior for the next several days.

Safety: Just a spark from a tire rim or chain can cause a wildfire. Hot exhaust systems parked off-road can ignite dried grasses, too. Check your vehicle before heading out, and park in areas clear of dry vegetation. 
 

River status: The Wild section of the Rogue River below Grave Creek will remain open unless fire conditions warrant closure. River status is determined on a day-to-day basis. Please call 541-471-6535 for more information regarding Rogue River permits. No new boating permits will be issued at this time.  

Road control: Josephine County Sheriff’s Office has established traffic access points around the fire zone. Closures: The Bureau of Land Management Grants Pass Field Office has a fire closure area encompassing the area west of Interstate 5 and north of Taylor Creek Gorge west of Stratton Creek, southwest to the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest boundary and west to East Fork Big Windy Creek and Bunker Creek. Red Flag Warning Raises Fire Danger

MERLIN, Ore. – Today a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. NOAA issued this warning for the Rum Creek Fire and other parts of southern Oregon for strong gusty winds and low relative humidity. Red Flag Warning conditions could promote rapid fire spread and provide resistance to control efforts on new ignitions.

Forecasters expect passage of a dry cold front this afternoon or evening. The cold front is forecasted to bring slightly cooler temperatures and gusty winds from the west to northwest. Rum Creek Fire personnel have established contingency lines further from the fire as containment features if needed. Containment lines are established along road systems as well as using old dozer lines from previous fires in the vicinity. Fire personnel will be monitoring the weather closely and watching for wind-driven flare-ups, especially along ridgelines.

In preparation for this frontal passage, firefighters have constructed both direct and indirect lines around most of the fire and have conducted strategic firing operations in critical areas. Mop up has extinguished the remaining embers along the fire’s edge near structures and on other sections of the fire perimeter.

On the east side, new lines are being built and fortified by strategic firing operations to keep the fire from spreading east from McKnabe Creek drainage. On Thursday, the fire made a push toward the containment line near Grave Creek. Crews initiated strategic firing operations in this area to reduce the chance of fire crossing the line. The Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) dropped aerial ignition devices to ignite a steep unburned area near Ennis Riffle to reduce the chance of fire spotting south across the Rogue River.

The southwest edge between Mount Peavine and Bear Gulch was fired during night operations. Fire personnel are working to extinguish heat near the edge of the burned area. Strategic firing continues north toward the Rogue River on the west side of the fire to secure this section.

Personnel working for the OSFM continue to mop up remaining hot spots near structures, and are patrolling areas along Galice Road watching for possible spot fires caused by wind-blown embers. Firefighters are working on structure assessment and pre-planning to the east of the Rum Creek Fire.

This holiday weekend, the public is reminded to be careful with fire. Rum Creek Fire was ignited by lightning, but historically, most wildfires are ignited by humans. Check local fire restrictions before starting any fire or barbecue grill. Make sure all fires are completely extinguished and cold to the touch.

Evacuations: No new evacuation orders or notifications have been issued. Existing evacuation orders and notifications remain in place. Progress on the Rum Creek Fire

MERLIN, Ore. – Firefighters continue to concentrate on the east side of Rum Creek Fire, focusing on areas of slop-over from Tuesday evening. Yesterday and overnight, crews established new fire lines and cooled its edge, keeping the fire from spreading further east. Fire managers connected new fire lines to previously established lines south toward the Rogue River and conducted a tactical burn.

Today, firefighters will concentrate work in and near the McKnabe Creek drainage. This area, described as steep, deep and full of snags, was unsafe for night work by firefighters. The fire is burning actively in the McKnabe Creek drainage, and firefighters intend to initiate line construction in this area today. Firefighters and dozers are also working south from Grave Creek, preparing fire lines for a tactical firing in the coming days.

Overnight, firefighters successfully burned a pocket of residual fuel near Ennis Island, with no spot fires found south of the Rogue River. This operation helps secure the south edge of the fire.

On the west side, fire personnel are making progress securing the fire’s edge. They have extended the tactical firing to the north and south from the west side of Mount Peavine. This connects existing burned areas with established fire lines toward the Rogue River and Bear Gulch. The completed line, when mopped up and secured, is expected to stop fire growth to the west.

Firefighters working with the OSFM in residential areas continue to assist with active fire suppression as needed. They have extinguished nearly all residual heat within 200 feet of buildings in and around Galice. More of the structural resources are shifting to the east of the fire to assess structures and do pre-planning and structure preparation in case the fire pushes in that direction.

After the inversion lifts today, the fire is expected to burn actively due to high temperatures and low relative humidity. On Friday afternoon or evening, a dry cold front will move through the area. While this will bring slightly cooler temperatures, the front is also expected to bring gusty winds from the northwest. Fire personnel will be monitoring the weather closely and watching for wind-driven flare-ups.

Evacuations: At noon Wednesday, Aug 31, Josephine County Sheriff’s Office issued a Level 1 – Be Ready notification the area North of Copper Queen Road and 2000 Block of Dog Creek Road. South of Rattlesnake Road, and Tunnel Creek. East of Brimstone Road, Lower Grave Creek Road, and Joe Count West of I-5. All other evacuation orders and notifications remain in place.
