These fires will transition from Great Basin Incident Management Team 5 to local oversight on Wednesday, August 25th, until another IMT arrives in a few days.

Weather – After a chilly night, a warming and drying trend should begin today, with temperatures in the mid-70s.  It will take several days of warm and dry weather for the fire to return to active behavior; heavy fuels and thick duff continue to smolder.

The incident is no longer using the Troy Airstrip as a helibase and it is now open to public use.

The fuel break is complete on Keeler-Rattle Road in the Halverson drainage, and final cleanup work will occur there today.  Ongoing repair of dozer line in Benning Creek includes pulling in berms and installing waterbars.  Heavy machinery will continue with creation of the shaded fuel break up Surprise Draw and Carr Draw on the northeast corner of the fire, working toward Goat Mountain.  Over the next few days, excavators will work to repair more distant contingency lines built earlier in the Iron Grouse road system, cleaning culverts and piling slash for later removal.

Closures – The Three Rivers Ranger District has several areas, roads, and trails closed or restricted for public safety due to fire management activities related to the Burnt Peak and South Yaak fires.  Closure orders and maps may be viewed on the Kootenai National Forest web page https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/kootenai/alerts-notices.
