Rough Patch Complex and Jack Fires Daily Update Sept 12

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Incident Summary:  Expected upcoming weather will rotate from hot and dry to cool with increased humidity throughout the week. This constant shift in weather will affect regions of the fire differently. It is anticipated that ridgelines will have lower humidity and may see increased weather activity while the slopes and canyons retain higher humidity levels and diminished fire activity. Firefighters continuously monitor fire behavior and assess actions as the day progresses. Objectives include keeping the fires as small as possible working toward full containment while preventing loss of valuable resources through full suppression.

With highly variable humidity, the fire continued creeping and smoldering, creating smoke in the valleys. Post rain with gusty winds up to 12 miles per hour, green trees are falling due to weakened root structures from fire damage and soil becoming saturated. Firefighters are utilizing logging roads as containment lines and are continuing to conduct brushing operations – using masticators to remove vegetation along the roadways to strengthen containment lines.

Chaos and Little Bend Fires:  The Chaos Fire is 24,462 acres and the Little Bend Creek Fire is 8,569 acres. On the north end of the Chaos Fire, firefighters were able to directly apply containment line to the spot fire that crossed the 2460 road. With the use of hose lay, roadbeds and rock features, this spot fire is holding at  three acres in size. Work is ongoing to strengthen those containment lines. Fire crews were able to utilize air resources and bucket drops to cool the fire on the southeast end of Little Bend. Crews are assessing the terrain to insert additional containment lines using old logging roads which would tighten up that edge of the fire.  Around 200 firefighters will move to the northeast of the Chaos Fire into an existing spike camp, sharing resources with the Middle Fork Complex.

Jack and Buckhead Fires:  The Jack Fire is 23,990 acres and the Buckhead Fire is 6,535 acres. The Jack Fire has remained consistent in size with the west, north, and northeast perimeter contained. Firefighters are continuing to work on the southeastern portion of Buckhead to create containment with natural features and roadbeds. Crews are also beginning to scout for repair work and plan for that work to begin.

Near Minky Fire:  The Near Minky Fire is at 4,867 acres. This stable, southern-most fire is being utilized to assist with the Smith Fire as it continues to move closer to its perimeter. The Rocky Mountain team managing the Devil’s Knob Complex has assumed operations around the western portion of the Near Minky Fire. This is being done to enhance their abilities to manage the Smith Fire safely and effectively.

Closures:  Copies of all closures and maps can be found at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/7758/

  • Amended BLM Roseburg District fire closure: BLM road 24-1-26 (Francis Creek) from the junction with BLM road 25-1E-31 (Canton Creek Road) North to the Roseburg District Boundary in Township 24 South Range 1 West Section 1 will remain closed.
  • The Umpqua and Willamette National Forests have temporarily closed areas of both forests due to the Jack Fire, Rough Patch Complex Fire, and Devil's Knob Complex Fire.

  • Highway 138 between Roseburg and Diamond remains open. Expect short delays for hazard tree removal operations east of Glide. Slow down and be alert.

Rough Patch and Jack Fire Daily Update Sept 13 2021

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Incident Summary:

To start the week there will be a shift to hot and dry weather with gradually decreasing humidity. The incoming flow of  warm, dry air with wind gusts up to 20 mph over the next 48 hours is expected to accelerate creeping fire behavior and the potential for single tree torching. Large growth of the fire is not expected to take place. Firefighters and support crews in all areas of the Complex are working to reach containment of the fires through a full suppression strategy. Fire closures are still in effect, please see closure listings below for specific locations.

Chaos and Little Bend Fires:

The Chaos Fire is 25,392 acres and the Little Bend Creek Fire is 8,970 acres. Work on the northern tip of the Chaos fire is becoming secure.  Crews have stabilized the spot fire that crossed the 2460 road near Fairfield Peak last Thursday. Firefighters are working to strengthen containment lines. The fire at Horse Heaven Creek – off the 3829 road continues to slowly grow north. Crews are actively working to slow the growth along the fire’s edge. Fire crews are using old roadbeds along with hose lay to contain the east side of Little Bend fire.  Aerial bucket drops on the southeast corner of Little Bend have assisted firefighters to hold the fire in place.

Jack and Buckhead Fires:

The Jack Fire is 23,990 acres and the Buckhead Fire is 6,861 acres. Fire growth on the Jack Fire is unchanged and containment lines are holding on the west, north, and northeast perimeters. In the southeast corner of the Buckhead, fire growth has been limited through direct and indirect fire line work using the road systems. Fire crews will continue to strengthen containment lines as needed. Crews are beginning to scout for fire line repair work.

Near Minky Fire:

The Near Minky Fire is at 4,869 acres. This stable, southern-most fire is being utilized to assist with the Smith Fire as it continues to move closer to its perimeter. The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team on the Devil’s Knob Complex is working to contain the Smith Fire on the western portion of the Near Minky  and Buckhead Fires. This is being done to enhance their abilities to manage the Smith Fire safely and effectively.

Rough Patch and Jack Fire Update for Sept 14 2021

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Incident Summary:

Warmer and drier air began impacting the fire area yesterday.   Last night’s breezy east winds are forecasted to transition to north winds today.   These north dry and potentially gusty winds could produce increased surface fire and isolated single and group tree torching on the northeast side of the Complex where heat and unburned fuel remains.  On the southern and western sides of the Complex, minimal heat is being observed.  Isolated pockets of smoldering and creeping fire could occur in some areas today.   Firefighters and support crews in all areas of the Complex will continue working to contain fires utilizing a full suppression strategy.

Chaos and Little Bend Fires:

The Chaos Fire is 25,392 acres, and the Little Bend Creek Fire is 8,970 acres. The northern tip of the Chaos fire that crossed the 2460 road near Fairfield Peak stayed in check yesterday. Firefighters are using hand crews and hose lays to improve containment in this area.  If favorable burning conditions allow, and if the situation warrants, crews will conduct limited firing operations west of the 3829 road to limit eastward growth.   Firefighters will work to slow the northward growth along the 3929-road fire’s edge in the Horse Heaven Creek drainage.  Yesterday, aerial bucket drops along the southeast corner of Little Bend helped hold fire in place. This helicopter work allowed crews to improve containment lines on old road networks in this area.   Crews will continue these containment efforts today.

Jack and Buckhead Fires:

The Jack Fire is 24165 acres, and the Buckhead Fire is 6,861 acres. Today's winds and dry air are not expected to increase fire behavior beyond smoldering in isolated pockets.  Containment lines are holding on the west, north, and northeast perimeters. In the southeast corner of the Buckhead, fire growth has been limited through direct and indirect fire line work along road systems. Fire crews will continue to strengthen these containment lines as needed.

Near Minky Fire:

The Near Minky Fire is at 4,869 acres. This stable, southern-most fire will prevent the eastward spread of the Smith Fire as it continues to move closer to the Near Minky perimeter. The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team on the Devil’s Knob Complex will work to contain the Smith Fire on the western portion of the Near Minky and Buckhead Fires. This work being closely coordinated with the Great Basin Incident Management Team 2.

Closures:

Copies of all closures and maps can be found at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/7758/.

·   The Umpqua and Willamette National Forests have temporarily closed areas of both forests due to the Jack Fire, Rough Patch Complex Fire, and Devil's Knob Complex Fire.

·   Amended BLM Roseburg District fire closure: BLM road 24-1-26 (Francis Creek) from the junction with BLM road 25-1E-31 (Canton Creek Road) North to the Roseburg District Boundary in Township 24 South Range 1 West Section 1 will remain closed.

·   Highway 138 between Roseburg and Diamond remains open. Expect short delays for hazard tree removal operations east of Glide. Slow down and be alert.

Publication Type: Announcement

Special Statement Oregon DEQ has issued an air quality advisory for southern Lake County, Detroit Lake area and Diamond Lake area through Friday OR DEQ AQ Advisory

Fire and Weather:
This afternoon will be windier and drier than the last few days which may result in increased fire behavior. Firefighters are strengthening new containment lines and continue to monitoring existing containment areas. The Rough Patch Fire is 46,092 acres. The Devils Knob Complex is 65,764 acres. Both are 35 - 40% contained.

Smoke:
With the possibility of more fire activity there follows a chance of increased smoke production today. Air quality throughout the forecast area may be compromised today by increased smoke. Tonight smoke may be trapped closer to the ground by a shallow inversion, but it should lift tomorrow by about 2 PM. Communities close to the fires will continue to experience periods of degraded air quality, especially overnight. Communities along the I-5 corridor between Roseburg and Grants Pass should have Good to Moderate air quality today and tomorrow. Medford may experience unhealth amounts of smoke today but it should clear up after sunset. Crater Lake Rim and Diamond Lake should have good to moderate air quality for the next few days.
