The fire was active for most of the day, it did cross the Carson River to the west. Most of the fire’s growth was to the east. Firefighters are expected to be on scene overnight and through the weekend. Please stay out of the area where firefighters are working.

If you are planning to recreate on public lands over this upcoming holiday weekend, remember that emergencies can happen any time. Prepare yourself and your group for the possibility of having to evacuate, in the event of a wild fire. Know your location and how to get out. Plan at least two ways out, you may not always be able to go out the way you came in.

Carson Ranger District (July 2, 2021 12:00 p.m.)

• Size: 200 acres

• Location: Cottonwood Canyon, approximately 15 miles due east of Woodfords, CA and approximately 15 miles due south of Gardnerville, NV.

• Start Date: July 1, 2021

• Cause: Lightning

• Containment: 10% contained

• Personnel: 1 Air Attack, 3 Helicopters and 3 Hand crews (approximately 170 personnel)

Current Activity: Firefighters responded to the East Fork Fire, located in Cottonwood Canyon on the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest yesterday afternoon and worked through the night. The fire was active for most of the day on July 1st, moving east towards the county line and crossing the Carson River to the west.

“Today firefighters are focusing on working in tandem with aircraft to secure the line”, said incident commander Stacey Saucedo. Cottonwood Canyon is a steep and rugged canyon with difficult access for ground crews. Flames and heat are being funneled uphill through the canyon from the river bottom, so firefighters are focusing their efforts there.

Firefighters are expected to be on scene through the weekend. Please stay out of the area of Horseshoe Bend on the East Fork of the Carson River, where firefighters are working.

• Start Date: July 1, 2021

• Cause: Lightning

Hall Mountain Fire Update - 7/3/21
Crews are directly engaging the fire and have been able to update yesterday’s acreage estimate. Initial size-up from an aircraft with limited visibility due to smoke was 20-30 acres. We are happy to report that the fire is now estimated at 10 acres.
Nonessential traffic is urged to avoid Forest Service Roads 2217 and 272. These roads are currently in use for fire access by heavy equipment, water tenders, and fire engines.
A North Idaho Type 3 Incident Management Team will take command of the fire tomorrow, 7/4/21. The logistical challenge of this fire’s location, coupled with the coordination needed with our Canadian partners has necessitated the upgrade in management level. Any further updates on this fire will be released by the IMT, and will occur as conditions on the fire change.
