Friday’s unseasonably warm and dry weather tested containment features on all three fires. Although there was a moderate amount of smoke visible Friday afternoon, its source was mostly from islands of unburned fuel well within the fire perimeters, the Grizzly Fire did grow about 25 acres. Crews working on the ground supported by aircraft were successful in preventing large scale growth on all three fires.

Brice Creek Fire: Size: 588 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023, | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 55%

Yesterday, helicopters and scoopers made water drops in the southwest and northeast regions as hotspots surfaced due to the warmer and drier weather.  Firefighters hiked south of Road 709 mopping up to bolster the fire line. Today, firefighters will continue to hold, secure, and mop up control lines. Helicopter bucket work is anticipated to address flare ups, and crews will work to complete contingency lines.  

Dinner Fire: Size:  304 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023, | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 95%

Engine crews patrolled the perimeter of the fire Friday to ensure that no smoke, hot spots or hazards having the potential to breach containment lines remain. A few areas of minor concern were located; additional crews will patrol and secure lines today to ensure that all threats to containment have been mitigated. Suppression repair will be ongoing.

Grizzly Fire: Size:  112 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023, | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 0%

Yesterday, two scoopers and helicopters worked throughout the day dropping water on fire edge to slow fire growth. With assistance from aviation, the fire remained east of Champion Creek and south of Grizzly Creek. Scoopers were again requested for use today along with helicopters to help limit the fires spread in the very steep terrain. Structures are prepped, monitored and secured.

Weather:  Warm and dry conditions will continue through the weekend with Saturday being only slightly cooler than Friday, temperatures down 3-4 degrees with humidity up 8-10%. 

Evacuations:  Lane County issued a Level 2 Evacuation (Be Set) for all private lands and mining claims in the Bohemia areas within the Cottage Grove Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.

Safety and Closures: Please remember to stay out of the fire area; this includes flying any unmanned aircraft (drones), if you fly we can’t. There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety.  There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire area.
