Total personnel: 472 | Total Resources: 11 engines; 15 crews; 1 helicopter; 3 heavy equipment; 4 water tenders
There will be a Virtual Community Meeting for the Brice Creek, Dinner, and Grizzly Fires on Thursday, September 7th at 7:30 PM on our Facebook page.
Precipitation over the fires on Monday continues to moderate fire behavior, though the fire area is entering a warming and drying trend.
Brice Creek Fire: Size: 583 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 25%
Work on the northern secondary containment line, which connects Forest Service Road (FSR) 2216 to FSR 951, should be completed today. Fire personnel are mopping up the fires edge, extinguishing smoldering material and felling hazard trees where needed. A large, unburned pocket of fuel, on the southeastern flank of the fire north of FSR 22, has shown little to no growth. If conditions change, fire managers will consider burnout operations off FSR 22 road.
Dinner Fire: Size: 304 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 80%
With containment increasing, excess resources are being shifted to other fires. Qualified saw teams will be removing hazardous trees and excavators and chippers are removing and reducing woody debris. Mop-up operations along the perimeter will strengthen and deepen containment lines to a standard of 25-50’ interior.
Grizzly Fire: Size: 103 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 0%
Due to the difficulty of accessing this fire directly in the rugged terrain, a Wildland Fire Module (WFM) is being inserted to the Grizzly Fire. A WFM is a highly trained crew specializing in managing remote and difficult fires. Structure protection around Crystal Lake and east of Champion Creek consists of sprinkler systems and fire-resistant wrap. Firefighters will be ensuring these measures are working and functioning.
Weather: Temperatures will range from the mid-60s to the mid-70s with minimum relative humidity in the range of 35-45%. Winds will be slightly elevated with gusts 10-15 mph.
Evacuations: Lane County issued a Level 2 Evacuation (Be Set) for all private lands and mining claims in the Bohemia areas within the Cottage Grove Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.
Closures: There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire area.
