Northwest Team 12 transitioned management to Northwest Team 6 at 8pm last night. Northwest Team 6 will carry forward the work done by Team 12 and continue with strategic management of the five fires in the area. In addition to the two fires listed in this update NW Team 6 is managing the Brice Creek, Dinner, and Grizzly Fires further north on the Umpqua National Forest.

Chilcoot Fire: Size: Currently 1,769 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 45%

Firefighters are working on building control line on the southern flank of the fire. Crews will also be assessing for opportunities to conduct small targeted strategic burning operations to prevent fire spread and strengthen control lines in the south. Crews will be patrolling and mopping up hot spots by extinguishing pockets of heat using hand tools, heavy equipment, and engines along the fire perimeter.  Air resources are available and supporting operations on the ground.

Ridge Fire: Size: 219 acres | Start Date: August 25, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 95%

Crews are working to complete control lines in the north of the fire and working on mop up operations to prevent fire spread.

Weather: Today will be the last day of onshore flow keeping temperatures cooler before warming and drying the next few days. Winds will shift northeast and become lighter as weather becomes warmer and drier the next few days.

Safety and Closures:  There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety. A Closure Order for the Canton Creek area has been issued by Bureau of Land Management (BLM): Chilcoot Ridge Fire Emergency Closure Order BLM Roseburg District. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over these fires.
