After a successful day of operations on the Yeso Fire’s edge, Carson National Forest fire crews will today evaluate interior areas, chip fuels along roads and may conduct limited firing operations if needed. The fire stands at 300 acres with no containment. 

Crews yesterday completed blackline around the entire fire’s perimeter. Blacklining is pre-burning fuels along the control line, which are primarily roads for this wildfire.  

The area remains open, including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and Forest Service roads. The driving public is asked to keep speeds down while around fire personnel and equipment. 

The lightning-caused Yeso Fire was first reported on July 9. For safety, crews are using a less aggressive strategy to indirectly contain the fire along existing roads while it provides ecosystem benefits within the interior. 

“The fire effects are looking good so far,” said District Ranger Angie Krall. “This work will tie in nicely with the nearby Canjilon Wildland Urban Interface Project.” 

That project to reduce the risk of wildfire around the village of Canjilon has been in the works since 2011. The Yeso Fire is near the project’s south side, where fire managers are planning to continue prescribed fire operations this fall.
