Bone Lightning Fire Update - July 8

2023 - Bone Lightning Fire
Publication Type: News 07/10/2023

Following a successful day of burning yesterday, crews continued ignitions south of the fire’s origin, moving along 2N05. The upper area of the unit is pine plantation with a thick understory of white thorn and ceanothus. The lower area consists of dense mixed conifer interspersed with dead and down trees.

In other locations of the fire, crews cleaned up unburned patches along the western section of 3N01. They also mopped up in the northern section of the fire utilizing a 50-foot buffer. This included extinguishing burning material down to mineral soil, cooling ashpits which will reduce residual smoke, making the fire less likely to escape containment lines.

Fire managers utilized existing workforce already in place to prep the 2N12 road west of 3N01 by removing dead standing trees. The 2N12 road will serve as a contingency line in the event embers and/or roll outs cross the 3N01 road. If that occurs, fire managers would allow fire to burn in these units. The likeliness of this occurring in this operation is very low, due to the moisture from meadows and wet drainages at this time.  However, these efforts will aid fire managers as they prepare for future prescribed fire implementation here, potentially this fall.
