Bone Lightning Fire Update July 5

2023 - Bone Lightning Fire
Publication Type: News 07/10/2023

Crews made excellent progress today with their firing operations. This is a result of careful planning, setting them up for success from the previous day, allowing them to pick up where they left off. Prior to starting ignitions, crews were diligent in checking and confirming that the existing fire perimeter boundaries were holding.

Once boundaries were verified as holding, crews continued burning operations and moved in a southerly direction, burning from the ridge top at 2N05A down to 3N01.  The 3N01 road will be used as the control line for the western perimeter of the Bone Lightning Fire.

Additionally, crews prepped and continued burning in the interior of the fire.  This area encompasses approximately 100-150 acres of standing dead trees (snags) burned in the 2013 Rim Fire. Over the years, thickets of white thorn have grown into the snag patch. The most effective way of treating these conditions is by fire. Today, extra smoke could be seen from many areas due to the fuel type of dead standing trees and brush.

A goal of the Bone Fire Lightning Fire is for fire managers to work with this naturally caused wildfire to help with its ecological role on the landscape.
