Smith River Complex North update for Thursday, September 7, 2023

GRANTS PASS, OR – Firefighters are taking advantage of moderated fire behavior across the incident. Equipment is enroute to the northwest side of the fire to construct contingency line. The team is preparing to conduct strategic burning operations in the next few days when conditions permit, which may increase smoke impacts to communities on the north side of the fire.

The Stanislaus and Del Rosa Interagency Hot Shot Crews have checked miles of line for hot spots on the east side of the fire, continuing to make progress on securing additional fire perimeter. Close coordination continues with Southwest Area Incident Management Team 2 working on the south side of the fire, sharing resources to support efficient operations.

Please respect the temporary flight restriction (TFR) established for the Smith River Complex; keep drones away from the fire and firefighting operations. If you fly, we can’t. Don’t be the reason a firefighting air mission has to divert! For more information on the TFR, visit https://tfr.faa.gov.

US-199 is OPEN to all traffic but continues to have hazardous conditions. An 8-mile segment between Sandy Beach and Knopki Creek has one-way, piloted traffic control. Delays of 20 to 60 minutes are possible. The Del Norte Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to refrain from any unnecessary travel. Local roads will be very active with firefighters and firefighting apparatus, especially between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. For additional information on road conditions, please see the Caltrans site and Oregon Department of Transportation's TripCheck site.

Monitor Rogue Valley Emergency Management site and sign up for evacuation alerts and updates at https://rvem.org. An interactive Fire First Response Map showing evacuation areas can also be found there.

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and Bureau of Land Management Coos Bay District have issued area and road closures for the Smith River Complex. A campfire ban remains in place for BLM and forest lands, and the Wild section of the Rogue River.
