A helicopter dipping at mobile retardant base, August 29. The large tank is used to mix retardant powder with water. Helicopters can dip their buckets in the tank, then deliver the retardant to the fire. This was the first day without thick smoke in several days, and multiple helicopters were flying water or retardant to support firefighters on the ground.

After returning to fire camp in the morning, they cleaned and sorted gear, figured out what supplies needed to be ordered, sharpened chainsaws and other tools, and had breakfast for dinner before sleeping.

Firefighters set up a portable pump by the West Fork Illinois River to the north of the Kelly Fire, southwest of O'Brien, Oregon on August 26. This and other pumps will supply water for the hoses along the fire lines near the Lone Mountain Road and west of Gilligan Butte.
