BLACKSBURG, VA -February 28, 2022 — The USDA Forest Service will be conducting controlled burns as soon as Tuesday, March 1, and continuing into late spring. Controlled burns help keep the public and homes safe by reducing the buildup of dried leaves and wood in nearby forest land that can lead to uncontrolled wildfires, as well contributes to the overall forest health. Safety is the Forest Service’s top priority, and Forest Service fire managers will conduct controlled burns in the following areas only under appropriate weather conditions:
Forest Service to conduct prescribed burn in Wythe County tomorrow, March 1

Location: 3.5 miles north of Rural Retreat, Virginia and 3.5 miles north of Interstate 81. Date and Time: Forest Service fire specialists will begin the 286-acre burn tomorrow, March 1, 2022 as long as weather conditions are appropriate. The ignition-phase will be concluded within one day. You may see smoke from this prescribed burn for several days.
