Update: Yesterday's Red Flag conditions created increased smoke and fire activity from the Blue 2 Fire that is currently burning in the White Mountain Wilderness area. The fire size is currently estimated at 1,478 acres, but a heavy smoke layer makes an accurate estimate difficult. Crews remained on the fire throughout the night last night.
Update: Today's Red Flag conditions created increased smoke and fire activity from the Blue 2 Fire that is currently burning in the White Mountain Wilderness area. The fire size is currently estimated at 700 acres, but a heavy smoke layer makes an accurate estimate difficult. The fire continues to burn dead and down trees and standing dead trees (snags) that were left after the Little Bear fire in 2012.
Update: The Blue fire continues to burn in a remote area of the White Mountain Wilderness. Crews are assessing existing trails to determine their suitability as containment lines. While crews work in the area, a closure order is in effect to ensure their safety. This area closure includes portions of the 107 Road on forest lands, including 107C, the South Fork Campground, and portions of 107 that are west of 107C.Light smoke may be visible, but significant impacts to the community are not currently expected

Update: Based on aerial observations, the Blue Fire has not shown any growth, and is remaining at .5 acres. Blue 2 Fire is also holding at 45 acres. The overall strategy for the Blue 2 Fire is to continue monitor while allowing it to take its course as much as possible. The remote location and severe terrain that the wildfires make the wildfire unsafe to engage directly at this time, and a safe perimeter is being determined for crews to contain the wildfire.
ALAMOGORDO, N.M., May 20, 2024 – Based on aerial observations, the Blue Fire has not shown any growth and remains at .5 acres. The Blue 2 Fire is continuing to spread, at a low-to-moderate rate of speed and is estimated at 45 acres. Smoke may be visible from Ruidoso, Capitan, Carrizozo, Mescalero, and highways in the area. The remote location and severe terrain make the wildfire unsafe for firefighters to engage directly at this time. Fire managers are determining a safe perimeter for crews to contain the wildfire.
