On September 12, 2023, just after 12 PM, 2 different fires started between Yakima Washington, and Ellensburg Washington, along State Route 821 in the Yakima River Canyon. The Roza Slope fire started about 1211 PM and the South Slope fire started about 1220 PM. The area is mainly managed by the Bureau of Land Management, with some private ownership. BLM resources started working on the fires and called in local area resources to assist them including air resources for water and retardant drops where it was possible. The request for a type 3 Incident Management Team was also made due to the large number of firefighting resources that will be arriving overnight and on the morning of September 13. South East Washington Inter-Agency IMT team 2 will take control of the fire at 6 AM on 9/13/23. The fires will be managed as separate fires but under one management team. There may be some sharing of crews based on the operational needs each day, and the skill sets of different teams.
This page will contain updates for both fires.
