The Newell Road Fire started, July 21, 2023 near Newell Road. The cause of the fire is undetermined. Northwest Incident Management Team 8, led by Incident Commander Kevin Stock, assumed management of the fire from Southeast Washington (SEW) Incident Management Team 3 on July 24.  Team 8 appreciates all the hard work completed by local fire departments, landowners, and all personnel that have been involved. 

The Northwest Incident Management Team 8 (IMT8) will be turning over management of the fire to local fire and agency resources the morning of July 30. Each local agency will be providing their own resources for their assigned section of the fire, which will include patrolling and monitoring.

Fuels Involved

Short grass, brush, and timber with grass understory. 

The primary carrier of the fire is grass and brush. The north flank of the fire transitions to mixed conifer timbered draws with grass and brush understory. Oak savannah patches widely scattered throughout the north portion of the fire. 

Developed solar and wind farms are present throughout the fire and surrounding area.

Minimal fire activity consisting of smoldering material with isolated pockets of heat and fire, primarily where surface fuels contain duff. Consumption of woody debris.

An approaching front will produce gusty winds (likely over 20 mph) in the afternoon and evenings both Saturday and Sunday. The winds will combine with low humidity and high temperatures, resulting in a red flag warning from 11:00 Saturday through 20:00 Sunday.
