The Fossil Complex is comprised of the Canyon, Holmes, Two Cabin, Kinzua, and Service Fires. The complex is currently 24,446 acres in total and is burning in tall grass and timber.

The Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 2 assumed command of the Fossil Complex on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 6 PM.

Fuels in the fire area are composed of open scattered juniper, stands of mature pine and mixed dry conifer species; all with abundant grass intermixed. Much of the lowlands as open grass with little to no brush giving way to stringers of timber transitioning to stands of mixed dry conifer stands in much of the upper elevations.

Projected Incident Activity

12 hours:  Tonight will be clear with temps in the high 40's and good humidity recoveries. Winds will diminish through the night.

24 hours:  Low pressure moves in creating high winds with little to no rain. Slight chance of T-storms in the area and temps will be into the mid 80's. Elevated fire weather and hazardous winds across all fires.
 

48 hours:  Temps stay cool with higher humidity. Seasonal trend sets in.

72 hours: Temps stay cool with higher humidity. Seasonal trend continues over the next few days.

Remarks

Fossil Complex consists of 5 fires for a total of 24,446 acres:
Two Cabin-253 acres
Canyon-192 acres
Kinzua-96 acres
Holmes-15 acres
Service- 23,890 acres

The Holmes Fire is 15 acres and is currently not in the Complex by Incident due to technical issues with SIT209.

Weather Concerns

Unseasonably warm and dry conditions will continue through Wednesday morning. A strong cold front Wednesday afternoon and evening will be accompanied by breezy to windy conditions, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. RHs will be low across parts of eastern Oregon, and breezy winds will elevate fire weather conditions. A cooling trend will follow Thursday behind the cold front.
