On March 24, 2023, the Last Resort Fire started on private land adjacent to Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. By Friday, the fire had grown and moved onto Refuge land.
Last Resort is currently being managed under Unified Command with Incident Commanders Tommy Sports (NCFS) and Gregg Buckalew ICT3/Caleb Jones ICT3(t) -USFWS. The fire is located on private and Federal lands in Tyrrell County, North Carolina.
Current Incident Objectives are:
1. Provide for public and firefighter safety by utilizing risk management processes.
2. Maintain current and accurate cost estimates of the incident using cost effective strategies.
3. Continue to evaluate which resources are needed on the incident and demobilize the resources that are in excess of incident needs.
4. Maintain current water levels within the fire area allowing water to soak into the peat soils, extinguishing the current ground fire and mitigating future threat of fire escape.
5. Continue to monitor water levels in the ditches surrounding the adjacent farm fields and remove that water when necessary.
6. Continue to identify suppression repair needs and document those needs so they can be incorporated in the suppression repair plan prior to the closing of the incident.
