Since May 29th, the Klamath National Forest has had several days where thunderstorms brought lightning to various parts of the forest. The total number of lightning fires reported as of June 18th is 16, the largest of which was contained at 1.4 acres. Scattered precipitation was received with the storms.

Reconnaissance flights to detect additional fires have been occurring over the forest regularly and will continue for the next several days. Additionally, Klamath National Fire Lookouts are staffed for the season.
Lightning causes about 80% of the wildfires on the Klamath National Forest. The other 20% are caused from things like mowing when it’s dry, unattended debris burns, and campfires that have not been extinguished. Please do your part to prevent wildfires.
