Electrical Service Restored to the North Rim and Jacob Lake

Yesterday the northeast corner of the fire remained active, with crews continuing to flank the fire with line construction and direct attack where possible. A smoke column developed over the NE section during late afternoon as interior fuels were consumed.  On other sections of the fire crews extinguished hot spots, conducted suppression repair, and improved fire lines. Power was restored to Grand Canyon National Park by late afternoon. Efforts continued to mitigate hazardous trees along highway 89A as the Team tentatively hopes to reopen Highways 89A and 67 for public travel by Sunday. Due to a previous error in calculation, the corrected containment percentage has been reduced to 46%.
Today firefighters will focus on continued suppression on the NE side. Crews working controlled sections of the fire will conduct suppression repair on the remainder of the perimeter. The weather forecast is for changing conditions with another wind event forecast over the weekend.

Mangum Fire Containment Increases to 68 Percent

Tuesday firefighters working the northeastern segment of the fire stopped fire movement at House Rock road.   Crews assigned to the north, south, and west perimeters were initiating suppression repair, patrolling, and mopping up hot spots in areas that have been secured. As a result of the fire suppression effort, containment was increased to 68%.

The weather forecast for Wednesday continues as the two previous days with hot, dry, and with very unstable atmospheric conditions. Firefighters, aided by aerial retardant applications and water drops, will use handline tactics and dozers to continue efforts to limit fire spread today. On the active northeast segment of the fire firefighters will tie in newly created fire lines to existing, encircling the fire. With 386 miles of line around this fire, it has been a tremendous effort.

Mangum Fire Continues to Test Lines North of Highway 89A
Monday continued the pattern of hot dry weather observed during the past several days. On the fire’s north east section, the fire continued to challenge fire fighters with afternoon runs.  The fire was steadily burning downhill towards House Rock road. Firefighters were prepared and poised to intercept the fire as it moved toward prepared lines.
Firefighters continued to reinforce containment lines, monitor for spot fires, and conduct suppression repairs in sections of the fire perimeter that have been secured.

The weather forecast for Tuesday is for continued hot and dry conditions with low humidity and an unstable atmosphere, ideal conditions for fire growth.  Fire managers plan to focus resources on the NE section of the fire where it remains active. Crews, utilizing water drops, dozers, and handline tactics, will continue efforts to limit the northern section’s eastward growth.

Wind Aligns With Terrain on NE Portion of Fire Pushing Flames East

Sunday westerly winds aligned with east draining canyons to push the fire off the rocky slopes towards the House Rock Valley. By afternoon, a large smoke column developed over the NE portion of the fire. Fire managers responded with air tankers and helicopters dropping retardant and water to aid crews poised to intercept new eastward fire movement.
The other portions of the fire perimeter remained active but within containment lines. Fire fighters continued to improve, patrol, and monitor the rest of the fire perimeter with great success.
Today’s weather forecast continues warm and dry. Firefighters will again hold and secure fire lines and anchor points around various portions of the fire while watching for spot fires. The northern portion of the fire will be the main effort as other portions cool. Crews will continue efforts to limit the fires northern section’s growth eastward.

Light Wind Aids Fire Fighting Efforts

Saturday’s weather continued with warm temperatures, light winds, low humidity, and active fire behavior. Interior pockets of unburned fuel remain inside the perimeter and were observed creating afternoon smoke columns. The containment percentage changed by the end of the day indicative of firefighter’s progress.

The northern portions of the fire remained active. However, work by firefighters continued to restrict the fire’s spread. Bull dozers and mastication aided in widening contingency fire breaks along both Winter and House Rock Roads. Other portions of the fire were in patrol, improve, and mop up status while fire fighters watched for spot fires outside the perimeter.

Today’s weather forecast continues warm and dry. Firefighters will continue to hold and secure fire lines and anchor points around various portions of the fire while exercising continuous vigilance for spot fires. Preparations are in place if the fire continues east towards House Rock Valley.

On Friday, favorable weather conditions aided firefighters in securing preliminary lines around critical areas of the fire. Firefighters focused their efforts on the southern, western and eastern edges of the fire. Crews work towards containment through successful firing and burnout operations and additional line construction.

Northern sections of the fire remained slightly active. Firefighters continued to limit the fire’s spread to the north by securing anchor points and constructing line. BLM’s Winter Road served as a firebreak and was enhanced by utilizing masticators to reduce the fuel load alongside the road, resulting in a wider firebreak.

Today’s weather forecast calls for westerly winds, hotter temperatures, and lower humidity. Fire behavior will be active with smoke blowing eastward. Firefighters will continue to hold and secure fire lines and anchor points around various portions of the fire. Anticipate that fire may spread east towards House Rock area.

How to RespondDonations

Related Incident:
Publication Type: Announcement

We greatly appreciate the support and generosity of the community! Our team’s focus is on the mission of fire suppression while keeping firefighter and public safety our number one priority. Our wildland fire crews are well equipped and cared for. After many donation inquiries, here’s a list of suggestions.

Here are some ways you can show support for firefighters.

  • Help keep firefighters safe by creating defensible space around your home. Creating defensible space around your home is absolutely the BEST thing you can do to help firefighters.  Learn how at http://firewise.org.
  • Post thank you banners / signs in the community and on social media.  This is a great morale booster for firefighters after a long shift!
  • Write thank you notes to firefighters. Drop them off at the incident command post so they can be posted or shared.
  • Write thank you letters to firefighters families.  Put them in blank, stamped envelopes.  After briefings or after shifts, firefighters can address letters to parents, kids, spouses, etc.

Items We Cannot Accept at Fire Camp:

  • Clothing
    • We have federal standards for personal protective gear for our wildland firefighters.
  • Food Items including baked goods and sweets
    • We are required to follow food safety regulations, and we have strict national guidelines for firefighter nutrition. Rest assured, we feed our fire crews three meals a day, including snacks.

Please confirm needs by contacting the organization of your choice before donating physical items (food, water, etc.).  Financial contributions to a recognized organization are the most effective way of helping them obtain goods and services locally and provide direct financial assistance to those in need.

Consider a financial contribution to a voluntary organization of your choice. You might consider a donation to:

  • Your Local Fire Department
  • The Wildland Firefighter Foundation or other firefighter support organization
  • The American Red Cross or other community relief organization
  • Your local Humane Society or other animal support organization
  • Other organizations of your choice

Thank you for your kind consideration!
