Firefighters Making Good Progress on Klamath NF Lightning Fires

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Firefighters have been busy the last several days after widespread lightning started 35 fires on the Klamath National Forest. Additional engines, crews, dozers and aircraft were brought in from neighboring units to bolster local firefighting capabilities. Firefighters have been working in steep terrain and very high temperatures to contain these fires. Two heat-related injurieshave been reported during this event.
Today is the first day that no new lightning fires were discovered since the storms came through.  Most of the fires are less than .25 acres in size. All but three of these fires are contained, in patrol status, or have been called out. The three fires that remain active have fire personnel on scene strengthening containment lines and mopping up.

Greenhouse Daily FINAL Update 7/30/2020

Today is the final day that the Northwest Incident Management Team 6 will be directing operations for the Greenhouse Fire.  Command will be transferred from this Type 2 team to Mt. Tolman Fire at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31st.

Crews were able to perform mop up over sizable portions of the fire area.  The occasional gust of wind sent dust or ash into the air creating plumes that would dissipate as they blew over the terrain.

Efforts today will focus on continued mop up, patrol, and removing signs and trash from the line.  On the northern section of the fire area, crews will be breaking down berms the bulldozers made when creating line to contain the Greenhouse Fire.

Warm, dry, windy conditions are expected today. Temperatures are predicted to be between 102 to 104 degrees, with humidity near eleven percent.  Wind gusts could be over 20 miles per hour. A chance of lightning will increase tonight through tomorrow, with little chance of accompanying rain.

Road construction on Schoolhouse Loop Road and Columbia River Road has resumed.  Fire personnel will continue using these roads as needed.  Avoid traveling in the area if possible.

The following roads are closed except for essential travel by local residents and businesses:

-  The Columbia River Road from Omak, WA, to Nespelem, WA, (Hwy 155).
-  All of Schoolhouse Loop Road.

The transfer station and recycle center remain closed at this time.  Smoke from smoldering yard debris may be visible.

During the incident strong collaboration occurred to protect fire personnel and local communities regarding COVID-19.  Remember to watch your distance (6 ft. or more), wash your hands and wear a mask to help prevent the spread of this disease.

7/29/2020 Daily Update

Yesterday temperatures reached 101 degrees, the humidity dropped to eleven percent, and wind gusts up to 28 miles per hour were recorded on lower elevations within the fire.  “In areas with receptive fuels, these weather conditions can result in extreme fire behavior,” said Steve Ziel, Incident Fire Behavior Analysist. “It is obvious that our fire fighters have been doing an excellent job of mopping up, or we would have seen more fire activity within our containment lines.”

Much of yesterday’s work focused on mopping up (searching for hotspots and extinguishing them) in the northern portion of the fire where it has been smoldering and creeping around in the heavy litter under pine and shrub dominated upper slopes. There was noticeably less smoke in these areas yesterday afternoon. Crews and engines will continue to focus mop up efforts on these areas again today.

Firefighters found few hotspots on the southern portion of the fire yesterday. Colville Tribes EMS Fire and Rescue firefighters applied water to the large mounds of smoldering cardboard at the Colville Recycling Center, successfully extinguishing any embers stirred up by wind gusts yesterday afternoon. They plan to continue this work today if needed, while Greenhouse firefighters patrol and monitor the area.

Warm, dry, windy conditions are expected to return tomorrow. Temperatures are likely to reach 105 degrees, while humidity will likely drop to less than ten percent.  Winds may gust up to 25 miles per hour again. There is a 20% chance of lightning beginning Wednesday at midnight, through Friday.

Fire traffic continues to be heavy throughout the Nespelem area. Additionally, all previous road construction Schoolhouse Loop Road and Columbia River Road has resumed. Anyone travelling in the vicinity of the fire should use extra caution and avoid traveling in the area if possible. Due to construction and fire traffic, the following roads are closed except for essential travel by local residents and businesses:

- The Columbia River Road from Omak, WA, to Nespelem, WA, (Hwy 155).
- All of Schoolhouse Loop Road.

Greenhouse Daily Update 7/28/2020

Firefighters made excellent progress on all sides of the fire yesterday. Crews and engines performing mop up (searching for hotspots to extinguish) in the southern portion of the fire found numerous small hotspots which they extinguished. They reported that the only significant amount of smoke in the area was coming for the recycling center. Today, Colville Tribes EMS Fire and Rescue (CCT EMS) firefighters plan to work throughout the day, applying water to the large mounds of smoldering cardboard at the site. Firefighters will be patrolling and monitoring the area.

The fire continues to smolder and creep around in the heavy litter under pine and shrub dominated upper slopes on the northern portion of the fire. Crews and engines are focusing mop up efforts on these areas now.

A weak cold front moved in from the south this morning bringing warm, dry, windy conditions to the area for the next few days. Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees, while humidity will likely drop to ten percent.  Winds may gust up to 25 miles per hour.  These conditions could lead to extreme fire behavior if fires ignite in areas of unburned fuels or escape containment lines.  There is a 20% chance of lightning beginning Wednesday at midnight, through Friday.

Yesterday a strike team of engines (five engines and a Strike Team Leader) and a bulldozer were pulled off the fire line and dispatched to support CCT EMS on a fire in Nespelem. Local firefighters were able to rapidly contain the blaze and the crew and bulldozer returned to continue their mop up work.

Fire traffic continues to be heavy throughout the Nespelem area. Additionally, all previous road construction work in the area has resumed. Anyone travelling in the vicinity of the fire should use extra caution and avoid traveling in the area if possible.

Due to heavy fire traffic, the following roads are closed except for essential travel by local residents and businesses:

-  The Columbia River Road from Omak, WA, to Nespelem, WA, (Hwy 155).
-
All of Schoolhouse Loop Road.
