Current Situation: Multiple small victories have been recorded by fire crews in the last several days. Night shift operations, coupled with cooperative daytime weather, have allowed significant progress to be made on tactical burnout operations along the fire’s west flank. The completed work has strengthened fireline off the 10N02 road. The line adds protection to the Hoopa Reservation and additional firing operations moving southward will further protect Willow Creek, Salyer, and other communities.
Community and structure protection to the south of the fire in Denny and northeast in Forks of Salmon has included brush clearing, hose and sprinkler lays, and outreach. A public meeting was held Saturday in Forks of Salmon to help residents best understand conditions in their area.
Additional fireline is being constructed or scouted elsewhere on the complex. Dozer-line was completed Saturday from Hwy 93 to Hotelling Ridge. Areas on the fire’s east flank and away from communities remain unstaffed due to remoteness and resource limitations.
Weather: Terrain driven winds anticipated at lower elevations, with gusty winds near and just above the higher ridges. Temperatures will be in the 70s.
Air Quality: Smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will combine with other fires in the area which could keep the levels in the Very Unhealthy and Hazardous AQI range, depending on proximity to the fires.
Area Evacuations: The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office lifted the Evacuation Warning for Denny.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office has issued an Evacuation Warning for the Red Salmon Complex fire. WARNING WILL BE ALL OF FORKS OF SALMON. FROM BUTLER FLAT TO TEN MILES EAST OF FORKS OF SALMON AND SOUTH TO PLUMMER CREEK ON CECILVILLE ROAD.
National Forest Closure Areas: The US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region has issued an Emergency Closure Order of all National Forests in Region 5 (California) pursuant to 16 U.S.C. 551 and 36 C.F.R. 261.50(a) and (b), of Regional Order No. 20-10 to provide for public safety and protect natural resources. The Red Salmon Fire Forest Closure Area became effective on August 8, 2020 under Forest Supervisor’s orders on the Klamath, Shasta-Trinity, and Six Rivers National Forests. As hunting seasons open, hunters are reminded the closure is in place for their safety as well as the safety of firefighters. Complete closure information is available on InciWeb for the Red Salmon Complex.

Current Situation: Fire crews made significant progress across the fire on community and property protection efforts on September 11th. Burnout operations widened and strengthened firelines on the western flank, adding critical protection to homes and residents of the Hoopa Valley wildland-urban interface. Overnight operations completed line construction on the west side along the 10N92 Road. Structure assessment and protection measures were provided in Forks of Salmon and Denny to reduce potential fire impact.
Today’s staffing and operational priorities will be to contain the fire west and northwest from the 10N02 road to the Hoopa Reservation boundary, including continuation of firing operations if weather conditions are favorable. To the northeast, containment lines will be repositioned to prevent fire spread north toward Hwy 93 and Forks of Salmon. Crews will continue to construct indirect fireline, prepare for additional burnout operations, and provide direct attack where safe to do so.
The fire is actively backing in Tish Tang Creek, forming alignment for potential future runs impacting cultural and resource values in the area. Fire behavior predictions suggest that once the inversion lifts today, there is the potential for fire spread in all directions.
Weather: Widespread smoke will likely cause cooler conditions and poor visibility, though the trend should improve through the week. Light and variable winds in the valleys and mid-slopes will persist into the mid-afternoon before becoming west-northwest at 2- to 8 mph.
Air Quality: Heavy smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will combine with smoke from other fires in the area and affect the entire forecast zone.
Area Evacuations: The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office has lifted the Evacuation Warning as of 8 a.m. today for the community of Denny.

Current Situation: In the early evening hours, some burning operations were conducted along the 10N02 Road. Winds started to pick up however, and minimized those opportunities. Patrol, mop-up and holding operations were continued throughout the night by fire crews.
Fire crew efforts will be focused today on repositioning containment lines to prevent fire spread towards both the community of Forks of Salmon and towards Highway 93. Fire behavior predictions suggest that once the inversion lifts today, there is the potential for fire spread in all directions. The fire is actively backing in Tish Tang Creek forming alignment for potential future runs impacting cultural and resources values in the area. The 10N02 Road will serve as a primary line for containing the fire east of the Hoopa Valley Reservation. Mastication equipment will be clearing fuels around Horse Trail Ridge in anticipation of future firing operations. There is still a critical need for suppression resources to continue prepping existing lines and build new fire containment lines, as resources are stretched extremely thin throughout the state and Pacific Northwest.
Weather: High pressure over the area will lead to continued hot and dry weather through the end of the week. Low humidity recoveries at night with low relative humidities will persist. Smoke from fires across the region will pass overhead, at times potentially shading all or some portions of the complex.
Air Quality: Heavy smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will combine with smoke from other fires in the area and affect the entire forecast zone. Communities that are closer to the fire may see levels towards the Very Unhealthy category with potential periods into Hazardous, while coastal communities may see some improvement tomorrow.
Area Evacuations: The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office has issued an Evacuation Warning for the community of Denny: THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE TRINITY COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE. THERE IS AN EVACUATION ORDER NOW IN PLACE FOR THE DENNY COMMUNITY TODAY 09-09-2020. A TEMPORARY EVACUATION POINT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED AT THE BURNT RANCH SCHOOL.

VALLEJO, Calif., September 9, 2020 – Due to unprecedented and historic fire conditions throughout the state, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of an additional ten National Forests, meaning all eighteen National Forests in California are now closed. The closure of the additional ten forests will be effective at 5:00 pm today.
These additional forests include the Eldorado National Forest, Klamath National Forest, Lassen National Forest, Mendocino National Forest, Modoc National Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, Plumas National Forest, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
This decision will be re-evaluated daily as conditions change. We had closed eight National Forests on Monday evening, Sept. 7, 2020. Explosive growth of fires throughout California during the day and late evening of Sept. 8th led to this updated decision. “The number of large fires and extreme fire behavior we are seeing across the State is historic," said Regional Forester Randy Moore. "These temporary closures are necessary to protect the public and our firefighters, and we will keep them in place until conditions improve and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely. I ask all Californians and visitors to take these closures and evacuations seriously for their own safety and to allow our firefighters to focus on the mission of safely suppressing these fires."
The Forest Service thanks our partners and the public for their cooperation and understanding of this monumental fire threat. It is critical that all Californians and national forest visitors follow these important closures and restrictions for their own safety and the safety of our firefighters. Citizens with specific questions within their area may call their local forests for more information.
The Forest Service manages 18 National Forests in the Pacific Southwest Region, which encompasses over 20 million acres across California, and assists forest landowners in California, Hawaii and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands. National forests supply 50 percent of the water in California and form the watershed of most major aqueducts and more than 2,400 reservoirs throughout the state. The Red Salmon Complex is burning on the Klamath, Six Rivers, and Shasta-Trinity National Forests within Humboldt, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. Team 14 will continue to work closely with the Yurok Tribe, the Karuk Tribe, and local community liaisons.
Current Situation: The fire had minimal fire behavior activity overnight, despite poor relative humidity recoveries, which stayed down into the teens and single digits. The minimal fire spread that did occur was on the southwest side of the fire. A few active areas of heat remain on the east and southeast sides of the fire as well.
Fire crew efforts will be focused today clearing dozer lines created during the Corral Fire of 2013, near the fire perimeter in the southwest area of the fire. Crews will also be in the community of Denny, where they will be making assessments and preparations. Tactical firing operations will continue along 10N02 Road, which serves as a primary line containing the fire east of the Hoopa Valley Reservation. There is still a critical need for suppression resources to continue prepping existing lines and build new fire containment lines, as resources are already stretched extremely thin throughout the state and pacific northwest.
Weather: Winds will decrease over the fire area this morning as the pressure gradient across the region eases. The high pressure over the area will lead to continued hot and dry weather through the end of the week, with poor humidity recoveries overnight and low daytime relative humidities. A Red Flag Warning is effect until today at 12 noon.
Air Quality: Heavy smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will combine with smoke from other fires in the area and affect the western side of the forecast zone. Communities that are closer to the fire may see elevated areas of smoke. Shasta Valley and Scott valley will see improved air quality today, with smoke moving back into those areas tomorrow.
Area Evacuations: The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office has issued an evacuation warning for the community of Denny: PER THE UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE YOU ARE ADVISED OF A EVACUATION WARNING: THERE IS A POTENTIAL THREAT TO LIFE AND OR PROPERTY FROM THE RED SALMON FIRE WHICH IS LOCATED APPROXIMATLEY 8 MILES NORTH FROM DENNY. THOSE WHO REQUIRE ADDITIONAL TIME TO EVACUATE, AND THOSE WITH PETS AND LIVESTOCK SHOULD LEAVE NOW.
National Forest Closure Areas: The US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced yesterday the closure of all developed campgrounds and day-use sites on National Forests in California. Additionally, the prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National System Lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California.
