Crews Respond to 50 Acre Wildfire 3 Miles Southeast of Tusayan

TUSAYAN, Ariz., August 3, 2020 – Fire crews from the Kaibab National Forest, Tusayan Fire Department, and Grand Canyon National Park responded to a wildfire Monday morning about 3 miles southeast of the town of Tusayan. The 50 acre lightning caused "Halfway Fire" was discovered by local aircraft and most likely started the day before from a passing thunderstorm.
Multiple resources have been working on the fire Monday including a helicopter, a dozer, 3 engines and miscellaneous overhead. Additional resources have been ordered to assist from neighboring forests and are expected to arrive later today.
The fire is moving in an easterly direction and is not posing a threat to any developed areas or Infrastructure at this time.
Smoke may be visible at times from the town of Tusayan, Grand Canyon Airport, highway 64, and from the east rim drive in Grand Canyon National Park. Motorists are asked to be aware of fire personnel and vehicles and use caution if driving near the vicinity of the fire.

Wind speeds will decrease to 8-10 mph and shift southeast early this evening before shifting back to the south around midnight. Relative humidity will be around 28 percent by 4-5 PM CDT as temperatures continue increase to highs around 99 degrees Fahrenheit. Relative humidity will recover to a maximum 86 percent by sunrise on Sunday. Similar conditions are expected Sunday, with high temperatures and dry conditions continuing through Sunday.

Today, ground resources will be patrolling fireline and mopping up as needed. Aviation resources, including a Type 1 and Type 3 Helicopter, are assisting with relaying information and providing suppression support.
Fire Weather: Winds out of the south will have speeds from 8-10 mph in the morning before increasing to 12 mph with gusts of 18 mph around 10 AM. Winds will temporarily shift southeast at 10 mph this evening, before returning south by midnight. Temperatures will be around 100 degrees Fahrenheit by 4 or 5 PM CDT with minimum humidity minimums at 28 percent before recovering to 85 percent at sunrise.

Today, the priority was to mop up and hold the fire perimeter. The fire has had strong and gusty winds from the South all day and all lines have held. Air attack was over the fire with a Type 1 helo working hotspots. The type 1 and type 3 helicopters played a big role in holding all lines. Crews will conduct a short patrolling night shift then return in the morning.
Fire Weather: Gusty south winds will continue through early evening, and then decrease at sunset, with a temporary shift to the southeast. Winds then return to the south by midnight. Highs near 100 can be expected 4 PM to 5 PM with minimum RH values around 27 percent.

Overnight, the fire slowly burned the unburned vegetation within the containment lines. Crews continued to mop up and patrol the fireline edge.
Fire Weather: South winds of 7 to 8 mph early this morning will increase to 10 mph with gusts to 17 mph around 10 AM. The gusty south winds will continue through early evening, and then decrease at sunset, with a temporary shift to the southeast. Winds then return to the south by midnight. Highs near 100 can be expected 4 PM to 5 PM with minimum RH values around 27 percent.
