CURRENT STATUS:  The Muldoon Fire transitioned to a smaller local Type IV organization this morning at 6:00 am; the fire is now is at 75% containment and holding at 374 acres.  Fire activity was minimal yesterday; the fire was smoldering and creeping with isolated torching.  Heat in the interior of the fire remains, the visitors to the area will continue to see smoke and trees torching but this fire activity is well within the interior of the fire and not near the control lines.

Firefighter and public safety is the primary objective for the fire.  The fire is in rugged terrain with presence of numerous snags.  Today, firefighters will continue to address any hot spots near the fire’s edge and hold and reinforce the fireline.  Firefighters will continue to staff the fire for the next several days and will continue to monitor the fire in the coming weeks.

WEATHER:  Warm, dry, and breezy conditions will continue through the weekend, with near critical winds and minimum relative humidity this afternoon and early evening, with a better chance for critical winds and relative humidity Saturday afternoon and early evening.  Near record high temperatures are possible this weekend.  Moisture begins to increase Monday with a chance for scattered thunderstorms Tuesday.

Stage I Fire Restrictions are in effect for the Salmon-Challis National Forest.  All Forest Service lands (outside of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and Jim McClure Jerry Peak Wilderness) within the Salmon-Challis National Forest are in Stage I Restrictions.

Nationally, there are 81 uncontained large fires being managed under a full suppression strategy and 18 large fires managed under a strategy other than full suppression.  These fires are contributing to the smoke, which is drifting into the valleys around the Forest.  The public can find further information on smoke at http://airquality.deq.idaho.gov/ and https://arcg.is/1Wy8jS.

MULDOON FIRE UPDATE

August 20, 2020

The Central Idaho Dispatch Zone is at VERY HIGH Fire Danger.

Currently, No FIRE RESTRICTIONS on the Salmon-Challis National Forest

On InciWeb @ https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/6984/

Date of Detection: August 16, 2020

Current Size:  374 acres

Containment: 55%

Location: 20 miles southwest of Mackay; Lost River Ranger District

Cause: Unknown/under investigation

Fuels: Timber (lodgepole pine and fir)

Resources on Fire: 98 personnel

Type I Crew: 1

Type II Crew: 2

Type I Helicopters: 1

Type II Helicopters: 1

Type III Helicopters: 2

Engines: 4

CURRENT STATUS:  A local Type III organization is managing the fire.  Firefighters continue to make good progress; the Muldoon Fire is now 55% contained.  Fire activity was moderate yesterday, with the fire creeping and smoldering with single tree torching.  Firefighters continue to construct line using assistance from aircraft to cool the fire’s edge as needed and are working to tie the line into natural barriers.  On the east side of the fire, handcrews have tied into natural features and continue to hold and improve the line with the support of air resources.  Firefighters conducted a burnout yesterday on the south and west part of the fire to pull the fireline away from avalanche debris.

Firefighter and public safety is the primary objective for the fire.  The fire is in rugged terrain with presence of numerous snags.  Today, firefighters will continue to hold and reinforce the fireline.  Crews continue to progress into the higher elevations of the fire.  Aerial resources will continue to support the crews as the potential for roll-out increases in the higher elevations.  On the northern portion of the fire, the primary fueltype is subalpine fir which has a large dead and down component with numerous snags.  It is unsafe in this area for firefighters to directly engage the fire therefore for firefighter safety, a sprinkler system will be set up today on this part of the fire to assist with cooling the fire’s edge.

WEATHER:  Near critical winds and minimum relative humidity will develop this afternoon.  There is a low-end chance of an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon and early evening as well.  Dry and hot conditions will build into the region by this weekend with high haines conditions.  Poor air quality will develop across the region due to area fires.

CLOSURES AND RESTRICTIONS:  No closures are in place for the Muldoon Fire.  If you are recreating near an ongoing wildfire suppression operation, please keep your distance - do not congregate in the area and allow the firefighters to do their job safely and efficiently.

Interagency fire management officials in east-central Idaho will begin Stage 1 fire restrictions, effective at one minute after midnight (12:01 AM) tomorrow, August 21, 2020The Central Idaho Fire Restrictions Area encompasses all Forest Service lands (outside of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and Jim McClure Jerry Peak Wilderness) within the Salmon-Challis National Forest.  Don’t forget it is your responsibility to maintain and extinguish your campfire to prevent wildfires.  Remember, if it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave; pour water and add dirt to your campfire until it is cold.  One spark is all it takes to start a wildfire.

CENTRAL IDAHO FIRE RESTRICTIONS AREA IMPLEMENTS STAGE I FIRE RESTRICTIONS

The Central Idaho Dispatch Zone is at VERY HIGH Fire Danger.

Salmon, ID-August 17, 2020

Interagency fire management officials in east-central Idaho will begin Stage 1 fire restrictions, effective at one minute after midnight (12:01 AM) on August 21, 2020The Central Idaho Fire Restrictions Area encompasses all Forest Service lands (outside of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and Jim McClure Jerry Peak Wilderness) within the Salmon-Challis National Forest which is within the Central Idaho Dispatch Zone.

Stage 1 fire restrictions apply to campfires and smoking.  Under Stage 1 restrictions, the following acts are prohibited:

  1. Igniting, building, maintaining, attending or using a fire outside a fire structure that is provided by the agency.
  2. Smoking outside an enclosed vehicle or building.

Exceptions to the above Stage 1 prohibitions include the following:

  1. Persons with a special use authorization, other Forest Service authorization, or a written permit specifically exempting them from the effect of the order
  2. Persons using a stove or grill that is fueled solely by liquid petroleum fuels
  3. Persons using a stove fire (defined in the order)
  4. Persons using metal fire pans within ¼ mile of the of the south side of the Main Salmon River
  5. Persons smoking while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is clear of all flammable materials
  6. Any Federal, State, or local officer or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty

Under these restrictions, campfires are allowed only in recreation sites within metal/concrete fire pits.  The restrictions will remain in effect until there is a significant change in fire danger.

Fire danger across east-central Idaho is VERY HIGH.  Rangelands and forested lands at all elevations are dry.  As we continue through the fire year, land managers across the country are constantly assessing fire conditions and risk factors, including COVID-19, that may impact our ability to respond to wildfires.  Fire management officials are hopeful that by initiating Stage 1 fire restrictions, there will be fewer person-caused wildland fires.

If you are planning a visit to public lands in these areas, please check with the Salmon-Challis Ranger District offices https://www.fs.usda.gov/scnf/ for the latest information or visit www.idahofireinfo.com.

Current Status:  The Muldoon Fire, reported yesterday, August 16 at approximately 4:00 p.m. is located approximately 20 miles southwest of Mackay; ½ mile east and south of Star Hope Campground on the Lost River Ranger District.  The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation.  The fire is greater than 200 acres burning in timber (lodgepole pine and fir).  Fire behavior yesterday was extreme with short crown runs, wind driven runs, and group torching.  This morning, the fire is creeping and smoldering; fire managers expect fire activity to increase as the day progresses.

The fire is in rugged terrain with presence of numerous snags, firefighters are engaging in direct line construction where safe to do so.  Aircraft will be used when possible to help minimize fire growth.  Additional resources are on order and will begin arriving today.  A local Type III organization is managing the fire.

Weather:  ...HOT TEMPERATURES CONTINUE WITH AN INCREASING CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH MIDWEEK...  High pressure will keep hot conditions going through midweek and beyond.   Monsoon moisture steadily increases through at least Wednesday. If you are recreating or live near an ongoing wildfire suppression operation, please keep your distance - do not congregate in the area and allow the firefighters to do their job safely and efficiently.

While the Salmon‐Challis National Forest looks green, fire danger is a concern.  Fires can start quickly and will burn in vegetation that seems green but is drying out.

A campfire can be one of the best parts of camping or provide necessary warmth to forest visitors.  Don’t forget it is your responsibility to maintain and extinguish your campfire to prevent wildfires.  Remember, if it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave; pour water and add dirt to your campfire until it is cold.  One spark is all it takes to start a wildfire.
