Start date: Aug. 16, 2020
Location: 9 miles east of Juntura, OR
Cause: Human/under investigation
Fire size: 48,128 acres
Containment: 40%
Total personnel: 395

VALE, Ore. – Containment lines are nearly complete around the Indian Creek Fire’s perimeter. Crews are now working to reinforce them while restoring disturbed soil to a more natural appearance.

Tuesday evening, the fire measured 48,128 acres with 40 percent containment.

Fire investigators have determined the fire to be human-caused. All human fires are preventable. These take resources away from the protection of life and property, which can limit the resources available to respond to initial attack.

The public plays a valuable role in preventing wildfires. Property owners can help prevent wildfires by doing three simple things: Plan, Prepare, and Prevent.  Before the weather gets hot and vegetation dries out is the time to Plan for a Wildfire.  Homeowners can minimize wildfire risk to their property by screening exterior openings to prevent airborne sparks or embers from entering.

Creating defensible spaces by keeping vegetation away from structures, maintaining a fuel break around all structures, and having a garden hose pre-connected to a faucet are all ways to Prepare for a Wildfire.

Whether it is properly extinguishing a campfire or keeping a vehicle properly maintained to prevent sparks, following a few simple steps can help Prevent a Wildfire. Learn more ways to prevent wildfires and protect your home at
https://www.nifc.gov/prevEdu/prevEdu_main.html.

R
ESTRICTIONS:  Fire restrictions are in effect across the Bureau of Land Management Vale District and Bureau of Reclamation-protected lands. This includes a ban on campfires and open flames, driving or parking on dry vegetation, and operating equipment or engaging in activities that could create a spark. Go to
https://tinyurl.com/Vale-BLM-fire-restrictions for details.

WEATHER: Prevailing winds are expected to shift from the southwest to the northeast today. Any lingering storm cells will move out of the area, followed by a warming and drying trend into the weekend.

SAFETY: Bow hunting season for deer and elk begins Saturday, and hunters are scouting now, which is adding to the volume of traffic along Hwy. 20 and secondary roads. Motorists should maintain situational awareness at all times.

VALE, Ore.

VALE, Ore. – Firefighters are gaining the upper hand on the Indian Creek Fire, although there is still much work to be done.

“We had a really good day [Monday],” Operations Chief Brent Meisinger said. “We’ll keep on deepening our lines over the next several days.”
The fire will not be considered contained until a 100-foot control line is around every area where a reignition could potentially spread into unburned vegetation outside the fire boundary. Thanks to the arrival of additional crews and engines, that work is progressing more quickly each day.

Monday evening, the fire was estimated to be 47,657acres with 28 percent containment. Dozer line rehabilitation is beginning in some areas and crews will also go back and smooth over the hand dug firelines for a more natural appearance after they are no longer needed.

Wildfires burn an average of 6 million acres a year. The U.S government spends about $2 billion a year suppressing them, not to mention the incalculable cost of lost lives, damaged or destroyed private and public property, rangeland, wildlife, ecosystems and habitat.

Vale Bureau of Land Management spends approximately $3.8 million a year on fire preparedness, which includes firefighters, training, equipment, supplies, prevention education and mitigation. Large-scale wildfires like the Indian Creek Fire are funded separately and can cost many millions of dollars.

“With much of the Nation's wildland firefighting resources currently engaged on active fires, you can help our firefighters by being fire-safe and preventing more human-caused fires,” said Al Crouch, Prevention and Mitigation Specialist for Vale BLM.

WEATHER: A continued chance of lightning combined with a wind shift Wednesday could test containment lines, followed by a warming and drying trend Thursday through Saturday.

SAFETY: Watch for increased traffic on Hwy. 20 and secondary roads. Expect to see large vehicles and heavy equipment entering and leaving the roadway.

Wildland Firefighters Rescue Lost Calf on Indian Creek Fire

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

After pulling his cows off an allotment in the Indian Creek Fire zone late last week, a local rancher realized one calf was unaccounted for. Unable to go back and look for it, he notified fire officials, who spread the word. After spending two nights alone on the range, a crew found the calf Sunday and delivered it to Incident Fire Operations trainee Russell Hamilton of Spokane. Hamilton then escorted the calf outside the fire zone to be reunited with its mother.

VALE, Ore.

VALE, Ore. – Firefighters have made significant progress toward containing the Indian Creek Fire and are shifting to cold trailing and mop up operations.

Sunday evening the fire was estimated to be 49,139 acres, with 20 percent containment.

Cold trailing is controlling a partly dead fire edge by carefully inspecting fire lines for heat to ensure no embers are left smoldering. Mop up work reduces residual smoke after the fire is controlled by extinguishing or removing burning material. Both activities reinforce the line as progress is made toward containment.

Resources have split into two camps to concentrate work in areas where the fire has been most active to the west and northeast/east. Justice Camp outside of Westfall has served as a base for firefighters monitoring and maintaining the fire footprint at night. Today, crews will shift to cold trailing and mop up to tie in with the well-established lines around the southeast corner. Cave Camp on the western flank is positioned to concentrate on hot spots and protect the Zotto Reservoir.

As of Sunday, there were 9 crews, 6 dozers, 9 water tenders, 36 engines and 1 helicopter assigned to the fire. Other shared aviation resources assisted as they were needed. No accidents or injuries have been reported.

WEATHER:   The weather is still in Critical Burning Conditions with temperatures around 85 and a slight west/southwest wind, with potential for dry lightning.

SAFETY:  Beware of increased traffic on Hwy. 20 between Burns and Vale, and along Harper-Westfall Road as resources move into position around the fire perimeter. Motorists should expect to encounter slower-moving heavy equipment and vehicles driving on side roads and entering and leaving the roadway.

VALE, Ore. – With contingency lines in place, fire personnel are aggressively working to suppress and contain the fire's progression to the northwest and northeast.

“We really appreciate the coordination of private land owners with the BLM during the suppression effort,” said Renee Straub, Agency Administrator for Vale Bureau of Land Management.

Saturday evening the fire was estimated to be 48,942 acres, with 20 percent containment. A mapping variance resulted in a fire acreage adjustment from August 22.

Firefighters are using dozer lines and existing roads to extend and clean up fire lines along the western edge around Westfall Butte. Efforts continue along the northern perimeter to keep fire south of Zotto Reservoir.

A second spike camp has been established northeast of Juntura to support crews and resources working along the west edge of the fire.

Work around the southeastern edge of the fire area along Highway 20 has shifted to mop-up and monitoring operations.

WEATHER: Temperatures are expected to rise today, with mild winds 5-10 miles per hour along the ridgetops in the evening. Smoke could affect conditions by lowering temperatures and moderating fire conditions.

SAFETY: Beware of increased traffic on Hwy. 20 between Burns and Vale, and along Harper-Westfall Road as resources move into position around the fire perimeter. Motorists should expect to encounter slower-moving heavy equipment and vehicles entering and leaving the roadway.

VALE, Ore.

Indian Creek Fire Update for Saturday, August 22

Brian Gales, Incident Commander
Lonnie Click, Deputy Incident Commander

Start date: Aug. 16, 2020
Location: 9 miles east of Juntura, Oregon
Cause: Human/under investigation
Fire size: 48,930 acres
Containment: 20

VALE, Ore. – Fire personnel are now actively working to suppress the fire at the west and east flanks, while establishing primary and alternate contingency lines around private property outside Westfall.  As of Friday evening, the fire had grown to 48,930 acres with 20 containment. Previous acreage was an estimate, due to heavy smoke preventing infrared mapping flights Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy smoke is also hindering air support flights during the day, although it is still being used when and where conditions allow. Those flights primarily on the west flank. Most of the smoke is blowing in from California wildfires, and will likely linger into next week before a shift in weather could clear the air. An air quality advisory is in effect.
Burnout operations late Thursday helped reinforce primary contingency lines around the Becker Roundhouse located near the northeast corner of the fire. Crews are now working to extend those lines south along Lawrence Road to tie into the well-controlled southeast corner of the fire’s footprint.

Approximately 30,000 acres of the fire is located within critical sage-grouse habitat on the Bully Creek Priority Area of Conservation (PAC).

To the west, the fire is moving toward the 2015 Bendire Fire burn scarLarge amounts of dead wood and juniper have been cut and piled to improve habitat, but conditions have not allowed for them to be burned. Those slash piles are now a concern for firefighters, as they are ready fuel if the fire continues spreading to the west/northwest.

WEATHER: Smoke is helping to moderate temperatures during the day and winds are expected to diminish over the weekend.
