Constellation Fire Monday 824 Update

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Location: 9 miles NE of Wickenburg, within Wickenburg Mountains                                               Start Date: Thursday, 8/20/20 Size: 12,252 acres                                                                                                                                 Cause: Lightning Strike Containment: 68%   Wickenburg, AZ ( DATE \@ "M/d/yy" 8/24/20) – Firefighters continue to secure up containment lines on the Constellation Fire and report containment at 68%. There was minimal growth on the fire overnight and was mapped today at 12,252 acres.  Today, firefighters continued building and improving lines and providing structure protection to residences and infrastructure in the area. Firefighters have scouted natural features to assist with perimeter control and have been able to minimize fire spread to protect values at risk, including the town of Wickenburg, Williams Ranch, the Owl Springs Subdivision, Castle Hot Springs, Crown King, Castle Creek Wilderness, active mining claims, and other various infrastructure. Crews have more than half of the fire contained, and despite afternoon winds, report containment lines holding. The southeastern side of the fire is the only side that remains uncontained at this time. Even though progress is being made and containment numbers are increasing, more thunderstorms producing outflow winds are expected over the next few days. Those outflow winds pose a concern as they can create active fire behavior, push fire over containment lines, and spread the fire in multiple directions. Only a 10% chance of rain is expected with those storms. Some area road closures remain in place for both the safety of the firefighters and the public. Castle Hot Springs Road is closed to thru traffic into Castle Creek by the county camp. Constellation Road at the Scenic Loop-area is also closed. Resources from across the state are assigned to the fire, including local, state, and federal cooperators. Approximately 130 personnel are actively working the fire, including two hotshot crews, one Type 2IA hand crew, multiple engines, water tenders, and various overhead. The fire started Thursday, August 20, nine miles northeast of Wickenburg within the Wickenburg Mountains. The fire is burning through short and tall grasses along with Chaparral.   Know before you go. Fire restrictions remain in effect throughout Arizona on both state and federal lands, including in Yavapai County. Check firerestrictions.us before heading out. The fire has grown to 11,252 acres, but is now 30% contained. Additional fire growth is expected over the next few days due to high winds associated with evening storms and firing operations being conducted by crews. The potential for increased fire behavior due to outflow winds means the fire may make multiple runs in different directions throughout operational periods. Today, fuels burned actively with prevailing winds pushing the fire to the northeast. Late afternoon storms continue to create extreme fire behavior caused by outflow winds spreading the fire to the south, southwest, and west. Evacuation orders are in place for five residences within the vicinity of the fire. Incident objectives include, protecting and minimizing fire threats and impacts to the town of Wickenburg, the Williams Ranch, active mining claims, and critical infrastructure. Firefighters continue to provide structure protection by utilizing thinning and firing operations to burn out fuels around the threatened areas. Firing operations is a tactic used to control the fire’s spread and reduce the fire’s intensity in an effort to slow its forward movement. Smoke Visible from Interior of Medio Fire

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

SANTA FE, NM – Oct. 12, 2020 – A green pocket of fuel surrounded by black inside the Medio Fire perimeter is burning, putting up visible smoke but posing no threat to any values at risk. Local fire resources are monitoring the interior pocket which is about a quarter of a mile from the Medio Fire’s eastern edge.

Fire managers anticipated the possibility of unburned pockets of fuel igniting and generating smoke until winter weather settles into the area. The 4,010-acre Medio Fire was caused by lightning on Aug. 17 and declared fully contained on Sept. 14. Based on the amount of fuel in the area that is burning now, including several large downed logs, the smoke may continue for a few days.

Warm and dry conditions will continue through Wednesday which is forecast to bring record high temperatures for this time of year and single-digit humidity.  A cold front Thursday is expected to drop temperatures by 25 to 35 degrees but conditions will remain very dry.

The closure order remains in effect prohibiting members of the public from entering the area around the Medio Fire, including all Forest Service lands, roads and trails, roughly defined by the Rio Nambe Trail #160 on the north, the Borrego Trail #150 and Forest Road 412 on the east, Forest Road 102 on the south and back up the forest boundary line on the west to meet the Rio Nambe Trail #160. Although the Santa Fe National Forest does not have fire restrictions in place, fire danger is very high due to very low fuel moisture levels and continued hot, dry weather.

About 30% of the fire area burned at high or moderate severity, increasing the potential for post-fire runoff. Although the SFNF does not usually see monsoonal-type precipitation in October, residents of communities downstream from the burned area are advised to stay updated on weather conditions that could result in heavy rains over the Medio Fire footprint. Current weather and emergency notifications can be found on the National Weather Service website and through Alert Santa Fe.

If necessary, additional information on the Medio Fire will be posted on the SFNF Facebook and Twitter pages, Inciweb, NM Fire Info and the SFNF website.
