Operations:
Drought conditions and extremely low fuel moistures aided in the spread of the fire yesterday, progressing over a mile, and mostly to the north and up McDonald Creek. Firefighters will continue to scout the road systems for establishing direct and indirect options and will look for opportunities to secure the fires edge down into the Black River today.

The Fort Apache Indian Reservation enacted modified stage 2 fire restrictions yesterday, prohibiting all campfires from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Find out more about these fire restrictions on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BIAFAAFireMgt/.

Closures:
To ensure the safety for both firefighters and the public, the junction at Y70/Y30, the Y40/Y70 junction, and everything south of Maverick and Tonto Lake is temporarily closed. The public is urged to drive with caution on the Y70 road due to logging truck traffic and timber operations.

Weather:
Today’s forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies, with a high near 80 degrees and expected wind gusts up to 18 mph in the afternoon.

Final update for the Sycamore Canyon Fire

Publication Type: News

  June 1, 2021 Daily Update

Acres: Approximately 1,858 acres
Start Date:  May 23, 2021
Cause: Under Investigation
Containment: 66%
Total personnel: 281
Location: 15 miles southeast of Sells, AZ
Fuels: Short grass and brush

Highlights:  The Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 4 will transfer command of the Sycamore Canyon Fire back to the host agencies at 6:00 AM on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. The Sycamore Canyon Fire will now be managed by a local Type 4 organization, led by Incident Commander Justin Wedo. The fire has shown no growth over the past few days and containment continues to increase thanks to the hard work of the firefighters. Crews have taken great care to mitigate potential threats to cultural resources, structures, and natural resources such as threatened and endangered species.

Operations: Moving forward, tactics and strategies for full fire suppression will continue to build on the efforts of the past nine days. Portions of the fire area that served as spike camps or staging areas will be naturalized to minimize evidence of this activity. Using large water tenders for transport, firefighters have successfully replenished over 300,000 gallons of water that were removed from local water sources for fire suppression. As command of the fire transfers back to the local agencies, assigned fire resources will remain until full suppression is achieved. Public and firefighter safety continues to be the top priority for the incident.

Weather: A weather event over northwest Mexico will pull moisture westward across the Arizona this week.  This will result in a slight chance of thunderstorms over the Sycamore Canyon fire area starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing into Friday.  These storms may result in what is called ‘dry lighting’, or the potential for lightning strikes and gusty outflow winds, but little in the way of wetting rainfall.  Otherwise, daytime high temperatures will remain near normal this week.  Relative humidity will moderate some this week, especially at the higher elevations and during the overnight hours.

Safety: Health and safety of firefighters and the public is the first priority. Firefighters are conducting operations under protocols to mitigate the risk of COVID-19.

Restrictions:  The Temporary Flight Restriction will be lifted on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. Due to increased fire activity and dry conditions, Stage 2 fire restrictions are currently in effect in southeastern Arizona. Visitors are reminded to comply with all restrictions to help reduce the risk for human-caused wildfire. For a more detailed explanation concerning agency restrictions and fire information in general, please visit  https://wildlandfire.az.gov/fire-restrictions or contact the nearest land management agency office.

Contact Information: The Sycamore Canyon Fire Information phone number and email address will no longer be active after 8:00 PM tonight. For future updates, please visit the Sycamore Canyon Fire page on InciWeb at: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7498/
