Lime Complex Daily Update July 13, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of two staffed fires and sixteen unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 865,620 acres, and there are 150 resources assigned to the complex, an area covering 21 million acres. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. We continue to monitor unstaffed fires for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: It takes a large, efficient team to care for and feed all the firefighters in the field. While crews typically eat MREs (Meals Ready to Eat, prepackaged preserved meals) for the first 2-3 days on a fire, they are provided with fresh food boxes afterward whenever possible. Since the creation of the Lime Complex on June 14, the teams have flown 230 fresh food boxes containing all the major food groups, plus numerous “comfort food” items, to the different fire camps around the vast expanse of the complex. Of the 230 boxes, 149 were type A, meant to feed two people for three days, and 81 were type B, meant to feed four people for three days. Here are just a few examples of exactly how much food has been delivered: 622 steaks; 149 pounds of bacon; 3,576 potatoes; 1,490 oranges; 149 pounds of fresh carrots; 1,490 tortillas; 304.5 pounds of cheese; 690 loaves of bread; 149 jars of peanut butter and 149 jars of jelly; 2,462 packets of hot chocolate mix; and 1,869 candy bars.

Weather/Fire behavior: Mostly cloudy skies are expected today as an area low pressure system moves across northern Alaska and a cold front approaches the complex. Scattered showers are expected. Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 60s, while relative humidity should hold in the 55-65% range. Winds will be out of the south to west averaging 4-9 mph. Fire behavior/growth should be low today and for the next two to three days.

Staffed Fires in the Complex
Door Mountain Fire (#244) – 114,294 acres. The Malheur Rappel and Galice crews made good progress on the mop-up efforts around the Lime Village burn-out and put down a hose-lay on the northeast side. The Garden Valley and Idaho Panhandle crews repositioned to Tundra Lake to begin protecting allotments there. They estimate it will take three days to finish brushing and sawline there.
Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 293,970 combined acres. The Grande Ronde rappelers and Burns helitack crew have secured an allotment cluster and cabin site north of the Koktuli River. They were able to complete cold-trailing a portion of the edge. The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the southern portion of the planning area near Lake Iliamna. Aerial water drops and logistical air support remain active in this area when smoke and weather allow for safe flying. Fire Boss planes are staged in McGrath and may be working out of waterways in the Iliamna and Lime Village areas. Helicopters and other aircraft providing support to firefighting resources on the ground will also be working in the area. Please avoid this airspace for public and firefighter safety. Rememberthe fire area is a no-fly zone for private dronesif you fly we can’t.

Lime Complex Daily Update July 11, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of two staffed fires and sixteen unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 829,629 acres, and there are 155 resources assigned to the complex, an area covering 21 million acres. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. All unstaffed fires are monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values. Highlights: Yesterday the rest of the National Park Service fire crew demobilized from Iliamna and returned to Palmer. Air Operations conducted seven flights between Palmer and various locations, delivering and retrieving supplies. A DC-3 picked up seven pallets of gear in Aniak, totaling approximately 14,000 pounds of supplies including four miles of hose, pumps, and other firefighting equipment. Much of the work conducted yesterday in terms of mopping up and assessments will continue today. Fires 189, 193, 205, 245, and 246 will all be flown today to check for activity.

Weather/Fire behavior: The Aghaluk Mountain fire (#206) received several hours of rain yesterday morning, and the previously spotted smoke plume/hot spot were no longer visible during an afternoon flight. It is going to be warm and dry across the complex today, with occasionally gusty winds, meaning it will be a moderate to active fire day. Highs will be near 80, with relative humidity values near 30%. Additionally, new fires may start to pop up from lightning strikes experienced during the last few days of rain and thunderstorms. However, shower activity is forecasted to return Tuesday and Wednesday.

Staffed Fires in the Complex

Door Mountain Fire (#244) – 104,929 acres. Fire Boss aircraft were able to drop water around Lime yesterday, and Malheur Rappel crew and Galice Wildland Fire Module will continue to mop up around the Lime Village burnout today. The Garden Valley and Idaho Panhandle crews will work on the fire’s eastern flank, near Trout and Tundra Lakes. Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 293,970 combined acres. Grande Ronde crew was working yesterday to protect a cabin on the north side of the fire. Today the air operations team will attempt to insert more folks on the ground north of the Koktuli River to assess some areas not previously visited. The Burns Helitack Module will work in the Koktuli River drainage to gain access on food to several allotments that have not yet been cold-trailed.

Lime Complex Daily Update  July 12, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of two staffed fires and sixteen unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 857,272 acres, and there are 157 resources assigned to the complex, an area covering 21 million acres. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. We continue to monitor unstaffed fires for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: Unstaffed fires were flown yesterday to check for activity and no concerning heat or smoke was detected. Crews on the ground remain focused on protecting structures, allotments, and the Lime Village area and continue mop up and cold trailing operations. Mopping up means to extinguish any residual fire to ensure it doesn’t spread outside of an established containment area. Crews work to break apart smoldering debris or moving burned debris so it cannot roll downhill and ignite any unburned fuels. Crews cold trail by carefully inspecting a fire edge to detect heat or any fire, digging out every live spot, and trenching any live edge. These are crucial stages in the firefighting process to ensure the fire perimeter is cooled down enough that it cannot reignite during high wind events.

Weather/Fire behavior: Yesterday was a warm afternoon with temperatures rising into the upper 60s and 70s across the region. More smoke than anticipated moved into the Lime Complex area due to increased fire activity north of the complex on Sunday night. This smoke helped limit fire activity despite the high temperatures and potential for active fire behavior. Cooler temperatures and chances for showers are anticipated today and heading into the rest of the week.

Staffed Fires in the Complex

Door Mountain Fire (#244)
– 112,274 acres. The Malheur Rappel and Galice crews completed sawline around the burn out and will continue working towards mopping it up 100% to protect Lime Village. Garden Valley and Idaho Panhandle crews worked the fires eastern edge along Lime Hills and have mopped up 100 feet in from the edge. They will now reposition to the Tundra Lakes area to start protection of an allotment and remain in the area to provide added protection to Trout and Kotokbuna Lake allotments.
Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 293,970 combined acres. The Grande Ronde crew continued work protecting a cabin on the north side of the fire. The Burns helitack module worked on gaining access to the Koktuli River drainage allotment cluster where they can scout and secure several allotments and by cold trailing.

Lime Complex Daily Update

July 10, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of two staffed fires and sixteen unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is
819,856 acres, and there are 164 resources assigned to the complex, an area covering 21 million acres. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. All unstaffed fires are monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: Mopup continues in the north near Lime Village, and cabins and allotments continue to be secured in the south. Air Attack continues to monitor fire 206 in the northwest and has seen a bit of smoke and some heat signatures, but they are not in an area of concern. An additional heat signature was picked up in a new area yesterday, but it turned out to be reflected light/heat from a manmade object such as a solar panel or radio repeater.

Weather/Fire behavior: Today the northern portion of the complex will be affected by smoke from the fires further north in the state. That smoke is expected to remain higher in altitude and act like cloud cover, keeping temperatures a few degrees lower. Iliamna will experience a mix of clouds and sun. The complex will likely experience continuing smoldering today but no active fire growth. With the decrease in fire activity and protection objectives being met, a Type 3 Incident Management Team has been ordered to arrive for transition later next week.

Staffed Fires in the Complex

Door Mountain Fire (#244) – 104,839 acres. A number of thunder cells that passed through the area yesterday limiting some of the planned aerial operations yesterday. If conditions permit those missions will be flown today. The Malheur Rappel Crew and Galice Wildland Fire Module will continue to mop up the Lime Village burnout. The Garden Valley and Idaho Panhandle modules will insert into an isolated portion of the east flank on fire 244 adjacent to Trout and Tundra Lakes. The modules will work to secure roughly ½ mile of hot edge. The remainder of this flank appears to be cold and is anchored into a rock scree and Trout Lake. Securing this portion of the fire will provide protection to Trout and Kotokbuna Lake allotments.

Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 284,288 combined acres. Grande Ronde Rappelers and the Burns Helitack module will work in the Koktuli River drainage to gain access to several allotments that have not been cold-trailed for hot edge. Unaweep will break camp and prepare for demob.

The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the southern portion of the planning area near Lake Iliamna. Aerial water drops and logistical air support remain active in this area when smoke and weather allow for safe flying. Fire Boss planes are now staged in McGrath but may be working out of waterways in the Iliamna and Lime Village areas. Helicopters and other aircraft providing support to firefighting resources on the ground will also be working in the area. Please avoid this airspace for public and firefighter safety. Rememberthe fire area is a no-fly zone for private dronesif you fly we can’t.

The Lime Complex consists of two staffed fires and sixteen unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 785,539 acres, and there are 158 resources assigned to the complex, an area covering 21 million acres. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. All unstaffed fires are monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: Since the start of the Lime Complex Fire, the logistics section has shipped 2,900 gallons of fuel; 373 miles of hose; 254 mark 3 pumps; and 37,800 pounds to sites around the complex. Aircraft are scheduled to fly a rappel crew out to a couple sites for assessments today, along with additional supplies. Fire activity should be limited to smoldering in unburned interior fuels and isolated heat along fire perimeters, with increased smoldering and creeping as the area warms and dries.

Weather: Yesterday morning began cloudy across the complex, with dense fog and/or rain in some areas, but the weather cleared up and dried out throughout the day. Winds remained gusty in the Iliamna region but light in the vicinity of Lime Village. Today should be warmer across the complex with lower relative humidity values. There is a chance of increased instability in the Lime area, with a small potential for rain and thunderstorms developing later in the day. Iliamna is not forecast to receive any precipitation.

 Staffed Fires in the Complex

Door Mountain Fire (#244) – 84,434 acres. Resources in the North Point Protection Group will continue to mop up around Lime Village. The mop-up standard for the burn-out around Lime is 100%.

Highlights: Most of the work by crews yesterday focused on fire 244 near Lime Village and 240 near the Koktuli River. Despite the weather, firefighters were able to complete a few logistical flights and achieved an impressive milestone: with roughly 1,000 pounds of supplies shipped out today, that made for 150,000 pounds of cargo shipped to the fires to date. Logistical flights yesterday included sending out medical and communications technicians and fresh food boxes for the crews: 35 boxes to the northern part of the complex and 10 to Iliamna.

Weather: Rain fell across the entire complex yesterday, with over 3/4 of an inch received around Iliamna and about 1/10 of an inch at Lime Village. Today is expected to be a bit warmer and drier, with winds of 8-12 mph across the complex and higher gusts, up to 25 mph, in the south.

 Staffed Fires in the Complex

Door Mountain Fire (#244) – 84,434 acres. The focus in the north is on securing Lime Village and values in the Tundra and Trout Lakes areas. Today the Lime Group and North Point Protection Group (NPPG) will be combined into one unit. These firefighters will continue to mop up and secure the line around Lime Village to a depth of 50 feet. North Point Protection Group resources will also go into the Trout and Kotokbuna Lake area to continue work on protecting allotments.

Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 271,861 combined acres. The fires are 35 miles north of Iguigig. Crews will reinforce work previously done on and near allotments in the fire area as well as assess additional values on the Stuyahok River to the south.

Lime Complex Daily Update

July 07, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of four staffed fires and fourteen unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 785,539 acres, and there are 185 resources assigned to the complex. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. All unstaffed fires are monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: There was good visibility yesterday, and aviation assets were able to get out and check on the fires across the complex. The bulk of the activity yesterday, in terms of assessments and mopping up, was focused around fire 244 and Lime Village, as well as some of the allotments south of the village. We have not seen much growth on fire 245 and 246 and the other smaller fires around the lower portion of the complex. Crews are continuing to work on allotments around fires 239 and 240.

Weather: A rain-producing front swept across the complex, bringing cloudy skies, high relative humidity, and cooler temperatures with rainfall in the afternoon and overnight hours. A second front is expected to come through today, resulting in similar conditions and minimal fire growth. Light south/southeast winds are expected across the complex, except for the Iliamna region, which could expect gusty winds from a strong low-pressure system near Kodiak Island.

Staffed Fires in the Complex

South Lime Lake Fire (#190)/Swift River Fire (#228), Door Mountain Fire (#244), Door Creek Fire (#273), Hook Creek Fire (#188) and the Aghaluk Mountain (#206) – 321,359 combined acres. Daily flyovers of Fire #206 have observed very little to no fire activity. The bulk of the fire activity the past few days has been on fire 244. Crews continue to secure fire edge and mop up around the defensive burn adjacent to Lime Village. This burning operation effectively removed the vegetation in front of fire 244 so if fire activity picked up and continued towards Lime Village there would be no fuels in which to burn. Crews are preparing defensive actions for allotments to the south and southeast of fire 244 and reinforcing those protection measures already in place.

Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 271,863 combined acres. Lightning starts. The fires are 35 miles north of Iguigig. Crews continue to prep and reinforce protection measures on allotments along the western and southern flanks. Fire activity is expected to be minimal today so resources will continue to secure and mop up as needed.

Upper Talarik (#205) ~ 7,986 acres. Lighting start. The fire is 16 miles from Iliamna. Firefighters were inserted into fire 205 on Tuesday and continue to assess and secure fire edge on a finger along the eastern perimeter. The forecasted moisture is expected to assist.

The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the southern portion of the planning area near Lake Iliamna. Aerial water drops, logistical air support, and other aircraft remain active in the area providing support to firefighting resources on the ground. Please avoid this airspace for public and firefighter safety.

Unstaffed Fires

Dummy Creek Fire (#247) ~ 179 acres; Cabin Creek Fire (#193) ~ 74 acres; Gagaryah River Fire (#197) ~ 38,087 acres; Kiknik Fire (245) ~ 45,734 acres; Maka Creek Fire (#207) ~ 1 acre; Nushagak River Fire (#189) ~ 10 acres; Stony River Fire (#198) ~ 39,166 acres; Telaquana River Fire (#216) ~ 7,791 acres; Titnuk Creek Fire (#246) ~ 53,291 acres; Upper Talarik (#205) ~ 7,986 acres

Lime Complex Daily Update
July 05, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of eight staffed fires and ten unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 782,468 acres, and there are 173 resources assigned to the complex. Each of these fires was caused by lightning. All unstaffed fires are monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: Defensive burning operations are expected to continue today from a prepared fire line around the community of Lime Village after being halted yesterday due to high relative humidity values. Ground crews are being supported by aerial resources when possible as firefighters continue to secure the fire edge and reinforce protection measures. Reduced fire activity was seen across the complex yesterday, and we were able to do some flying in the southern portion of the complex and pull some equipment out.

Weather: Cloud cover and high relative humidity values were observed across the entire fire complex yesterday, with smoke clearing in some areas but remaining in others. There is a low chance of rain today and only in the vicinity of Lime. From Sleetmute west to Aniak, expect partly cloudy skies, with mostly cloudy skies elsewhere. The chance of widespread wetting rain is expected to increase tomorrow and Thursday, with additional rain Friday. Fuels are extremely dry though and could dry out again quickly, depending on the extent of the rainfall.

Staffed Fires in the Complex

South Lime Lake Fire (#190)/Swift River Fire (#228), Door Mountain Fire (#244), Door Creek Fire (#273) and the Hook Creek Fire (#188) – 203,037 combined acres. Defensive firing was not initiated yesterday due to the high relatively humidity values in the area, but crews are in place to complete the burn today if possible. Mop-up and patrolling of previously burned areas will take place. Resources will continue moving pumps and fuel tanks further up river banks in expectation of significant rainfall and rising water levels. They will scout out several allotments in the vicinity of fire 244 that have not been assessed to date.

Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 271,493 combined acres. Lightning starts. The fires are 35 miles north of Iguigig. Resources are engaged in mop-up at several allotments within the fire footprint. Crews will continue to secure and patrol these areas and scout additional areas that need to be assessed.

Aghaluk Mountain (#206) – 115,620 acres. Lightning start. The fire remains 51 miles east of Aniak. Fire activity has been minimal. Resources continue to assist with point protection and structure protection on fires to the north.

The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the southern portion of the planning area near Lake Iliamna. Aerial water drops and logistical air support remain active in this area when smoke and weather allow for safe flying. Fire Boss planes are working out of Lake Iliamna, as well as helicopters and other aircraft providing support to firefighting resources on the ground. Please avoid this airspace for public and firefighter safety.

Lime Complex Daily Update
July 04, 2022, 9:30 am

The Lime Complex consists of eight staffed fires and ten unstaffed fires. The total size of the combined fires is 778,877 acres and there are 197 resources assigned to the complex. Each of these fires were caused by lightning. All unstaffed fires are monitored for growth and potential threats to identified values.

Highlights: Defensive burning operations were initiated from a prepared fire line around the community of Lime Village in response to greater than expected growth to the east on Fire #244. The burn is progressing as planned and is being supported by aerial resources as firefighters continue to secure fire edge and reinforce protection measures. Somewhat improved visibility is providing an opportunity to insert supplies and additional resources to augment crews already in place, reinforce existing structure protection measures around Lime Village, and conduct aerial reconnaissance of fires that have been hidden by smoke and/or clouds the past few days.

Weather: Cooler temperatures, cloud cover, and high relative humidity values were observed across the entire fire complex yesterday. Very light rain was seen across the southernmost fires in the morning, but the remainder were precipitation free. The trend toward wetter and cooler weather will continue today with an uptick in shower activity, though total rainfall will only be up to a tenth of an inch. Winds will remain light and out of the west or terrain driven.

Staffed Fires in the Complex

South Lime Lake Fire (#190)/Swift River Fire (#228), Door Mountain Fire (#244), Door Creek Fire (#273) and the Hook Creek Fire (#188) – 199,825 combined acres. Visibility improved in the early afternoon yesterday which provided an opportunity for air attack and Fire Boss planes to support. Supplies and additional resources were inserted to reinforce protection measures. Moderating temperatures and favorable winds provided an opportunity to implement defensive burning operations to further protect the community of Lime Village.

Pike Creek (#239)/Koktuli River (#240) – 271,114 combined acres. Lightning starts. The fires are 35 miles north of Iguigig. Resources continue to assess allotments along the fire perimeter to assess the extent of heat present. Crews continue to mop up to secure fire edge with assistance of UAS with infrared. Helicopters are assessing outlying areas.

Aghaluk Mountain (#206) – 115,620 acres. Lightning start. The fire remains 51 miles east of Aniak. Fire activity has been minimal. Resources continue to assist with point protection and structure protection on fires to the north.
