Containment percentage increase as dry and breezy conditions return to area
Related Incident: Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation:
Cloudy conditions suppressed fire activity on Wednesday keeping fire behavior minimal. Despite the cloud cover, the fire area received no precipitation. Today’s weather brings sunny conditions with dry, warm and breezy winds. Fire activity is predicted to be minimal with creeping and smoldering of unburned pockets of fuel within the current fire perimeter. The Sugarloaf Fire is 839 acres and 23% contained.
On the west side of the fire in Division Zulu, crews are mopping up hot spots and patrolling the fire line along Cow Creek. Interior pockets of unburned fuel continue to smolder within the fire perimeter which will continue to produce some visible smoke. Mopping up is extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines to eliminate the potential for fire spread.
On the east side of the fire in Division Alpha, a small number of hot spots remain in the southern part of the fire. Hotshot crews continue to patrol and utilize an infra-red drone to locate those hot spots and take suppression action when they can safely access those hot spots.
The Structure Division is supporting the other Divisions and completing back haul of materials from indirect fire lines and structure protection.
Weather & Fuel Conditions:
Over the next two days higher temperatures and drying conditions return to the area. Interior pockets of unburned fuels within the fire perimeter will continue to smolder with the possibility of isolated single tree torching. A summer cold front will enter the area bringing widespread showers and thunderstorms over the weekend.

Crews continue to make progress after completing successful firing operation
Current Situation: Tuesday’s firing operation on the west side of the sugarloaf fire was successful, utilizing lower intensity fire to eliminate fuels between the main fire and the indirect fire line at cow creek. Fire activity was moderate yesterday with primarily backing, creeping and smoldering fire. The cold front passed through bringing higher relative humidity, lower wind speeds, cooler temperatures and cloudy conditions. Today, fire activity is predicted to be low with creeping and smoldering of unburned pockets of fuel within the current fire perimeter. After yesterday’s successful completion of the firing operation, the fire now 839 acres and remains 19% contained. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are predicted with possible lightning and gusty winds over the fire area today.
On the west side of the fire in Division Zulu, the firing operation to bring fire down to the indirect fire lines at Cow Creek is complete. Today crews will be patrolling and strengthening the fire line by mopping up and putting out hot spots. Mopping up is extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines to eliminate the potential for fire spread.
On the east side of the fire in Division Alpha, the number of hot spots has been decreasing daily as the hotshot crews continue to engage with suppression actions moving south along the fires edge. These efforts continue today to reduce the potential for fire growth to the south. The indirect fire line on this side of the fire has been completed.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Moisture will continue to pass through the area bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms. Isolated thunderstorms with rain and breezy winds up to 20 mph are predicted. Another cold front will approach the area this weekend, with an increase in winds and showers expected. Light fuels and unburned pockets of heavier fuels within the fire perimeter may be consumed with minimal fire behavior, mainly creeping and smoldering activity.
Evacuations: An evacuation notice is in place for Bear Creek Road between the Garrett intersection and Friend Park. Pre-evacuation for Friend Park, and Fetterman to Garrett Ranch. If you are evacuating the Sugarloaf Fire area and need assistance with temporary housing, please contact Albany County Emergency Management at (307) 721-1815 or (307) 721-1896.

Suppression activities continue as cold front approaches, bringing strong gusty winds
Current Situation: Yesterday fire activity was moderate with primarily backing, creeping and smoldering fire. A smoke column was visible from aerial firing operations on the west side of the fire and smoke from other fires in the area combined with smoke from western states contributed to hazy conditions for much of Wyoming. Tuesday a cold front is predicted with increased winds, higher relative humidity, increased chance of rain, and slightly cooler temperatures. Fire activity for today is expected to be creeping and smoldering with wind driven surface fire and a potential for spotting. Based on infrared flight Monday night, the fire is 699 acres and is 19% contained. Yesterdays firing operation contributed to the increase in acreage.
A group of five engines is staffing the fire overnight monitoring fire activity due to the potential for increased winds.
On the west side of the fire in Division Zulu, if weather conditions allow, aerial firing operation with a PSD system (Plastic Sphere Dispenser) will continue slowly bringing low intensity fire towards the completed indirect fire line. Sphere introductions will cause an increase in smoke which may be visible from far away. Indirect lines are complete on the west side of the fire at Cow Creek.
On the east side of the fire in Division Alpha, the number of “hot spots” are decreasing as the hotshot crews engage with suppression actions. If windy conditions and terrain allow, they will hike into those areas and take action using a combination of hand tools and aerial water drops. These efforts continue to reduce the fire spread to the east and the potential for firing operations on the east side of the fire. An indirect fire line has been completed.
Firing operations introduce lower intensity fire under specific conditions. Low intensity fire is less damaging to the land and allows firefighters to strengthen containment along the perimeter by reducing the amount of vegetation available to burn. Weather conditions, such as humidity levels and winds, and the availability of qualified personnel to coordinate the firing are two factors that determine if these operations can be undertaken. If any of the required conditions cannot be met, firing operations will not occur.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Cooler temperatures will combine with higher humidity values over the next 24 hours as a cold front comes through the area. Isolated thunderstorms with rain and gusty winds up to 35 mph are predicted. After the cold front passes, cooler temperatures and less winds are expected Wednesday.

Current Situation: On Sunday, fire activity remained low with primarily creeping and smoldering as lighter fuels begin to dry, smoke production was more visible over the fire due to a test of aerial firing operations on the west side of the fire. Today warm, dry and breezy weather conditions will make for moderate fire activity with backing and single tree torching activity depending on fuel conditions. Based on infrared flight last night the fire is 553 acres and is 19% contained. A module of engines on night shift was added overnight to monitor fire activity.
In Division Zulu, if weather allows, the aerial firing operation with PSD system (Plastic Sphere Dispenser) will continue slowly bringing low intensity fire towards the completed indirect fire line. Sphere introductions will cause an increase in smoke which may be visible from far away. Indirect lines are complete on the west side of the fire.
In Division Alpha, hotshot crews will continue using aerial resources to locate “hot spots”. If weather and terrain conditions allow, they will hike into those areas and take suppression action using a combination of hand tools and aerial water drops. These efforts are to reduce the fire spread to the east and the potential for firing operations on the east side of the fire. An indirect fire line has been completed, the search for alternate indirect lines closer to the active fire perimeter continues today.
Firing operations are conducted to introduce lower intensity fire under specific conditions.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Warmer temperatures will combine with lower humidity values over the next 24 hours as afternoon showers are isolated thunderstorms become possible. Brief heavy rain, small hail, gusty outflow winds to 35-40 mph and dangerous cloud to ground lightning will remain a threat from any thunderstorms that pass over or near the fire. Warm, breezy, and dry conditions are predicted with possible gusty winds tonight. A cold front will arrive by late Tuesday bringing more moisture the area.

Hours of Operation: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Current Situation: Warmer and drier weather continues to move into the area, leading to an increase in smoke production on Saturday. Fire activity remained minimal with primarily creeping and smoldering as lighter fuels begin to dry, isolated single tree torching was observed. Similar conditions are anticipated today. The fire is 524 acres and is 19% contained.
Firefighters and bulldozers have spent the past several days constructing and improving indirect containment line and installing a hose lay which will deliver water to the indirect line along the east and south sides of the fire. This was done in preparation for a possible planned firing operation, which would involve the use of a PSD system (Plastic Sphere Dispenser) that drops spheres similar to ping pong balls out of a dispenser attached to a helicopter or drone which controls the output of these spheres. The spheres contain a mixture that combine on impact and ignite the vegetation on the ground which allows the fire to slowly back down to meet the fireline securing the edge of the fire. These spheres are used to introduce fire in remote areas or where the terrain is too dangerous to insert firefighters.
In Division Zulu, on the west side of the fire above Cow Creek, a Hotshot crew is planning to utilize PSD to introduce a small amount of fire near the top of the drainage, just below the existing fire edge. This is being done as a test for a potential planned firing operation tomorrow. This operation is an effort to bring lower intensity fire down the slope to Cow Creek. Sphere introductions will cause an increase in smoke which may be visible from far away. In Division Alpha, one the east side of the fire, several days of precipitation have led to a decline in the amount of heat and fire being detected. Due to the steep, rocky, and rugged terrain, an unmanned aircraft will be flying over the fire perimeter today to locate remaining pockets of heat. If “hot spots” are located, hotshot crews will be hiking into those areas in an effort to extinguish them, if safe to do so. A risk versus reward assessment will be conducted based on location and fire conditions, before sending firefighters to the location. If these crews are successful in eliminating these “hot spots,” the planned firing operations along the east side of the fire may not be necessary.
Firing operations are conducted to introduce lower intensity fire under specific conditions. Brief heavy rain, small hail, gusty outflow winds to 35-40 mph and dangerous cloud to ground lightning will remain a threat from any thunderstorms that pass over or near the fire. Temperatures will be warming by 2 to 3 degrees a day through Monday with humidity levels possibly dropping below 20 percent on Monday.

Drier Weather May Result in an Increase of Smoke
Related Incident: Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: As a drier weather pattern moves into the area, there may be an increase in smoke over the Sugarloaf Fire. Lighter fuels, such as grasses, will begin to dry out after several days of rain and higher humidity levels allowing them to burn more readily. Fire behavior is expected to remain minimal with creeping and smoldering in heavier fuels such as logs and stumps. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are still possible. The fire is 516-acres with 0% containment.
With little heat remaining on the north edge of the fire, crews will begins focusing on completing indirect line along the south end of the fire. As bulldozers continue improving the existing two-track road that extends from the east side of the fire to the south, handcrews will be working behind them, improving the completed line. Improving the line involves using chainsaw and hand tools to remove smaller vegetations on the sides of the bulldozer line to reduce the amount of available fuel should the fire reach the line. It also allows firefighters to introduce lower intensity ground fire ahead of the main fire during firing operations, if they are needed and when conditions allow.
Crews that have been working along Cow Creek, on the west side of the fire, will be constructing handline from the south end of the creek towards the east. This line will meet the bulldozer line to form a continuous, indirect containment line across the south end of the fire.
While improvements in the Cow Creek drainage and construction of direct handline along the north edge of the fire have been completed, firefighters will continue to patrol those areas to ensure no new areas of heat develop.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Drier conditions will be moving into the area over the next 24 hours, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms becoming more isolated. Brief, heavy rain, hail, gusty outflow winds to 40 m.p.h. and dangerous cloud to ground lightning will remain a threat from any thunderstorms that pass over or near the fire. Temperatures will be warming by 2 to 4 degrees a day through Monday with humidity levels dropping below 20 percent Monday.

Rain and High Humidity Levels Continue to Limit Fire Spread
Related Incident: Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: For the second day in a row, precipitation fell over the Sugarloaf Fire limiting fire activity to backing, creeping, and smoldering. The fire remains 512-acres with 0% containment. Limited fire spread is expected to continue until a change in weather occurs.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms, along with higher humidity levels on Friday, will continue to moderate fire activity allowing crews to strengthen handline along the north end of the fire between Cow Creek and the eastern edge of the perimeter. Firefighters will be working to extend an indirect line from the northeast corner to an existing two track road east of the fire.
Along the west side, the fire continues to creep and back downslope. Crews are working to improve areas along Cow Creek to take advantage of the transition from timber to lighter, green fuels along the creek. These improvements could assist in slowing fire spread and reducing fire intensity, if it reaches the bottom of the drainage.
Bulldozers have completed improving the existing two-track road on the east side of the fire and will continue working along the road to the south and west. Additional fire personnel continue to scout for additional opportunities to develop containment lines along the southern end of the fire.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Scattered showers and thunderstorms occurred over and near the fire over the past 24 hours and brought light rainfall amounts ranging from 0.05 inches to 0.15 inches. Another round of showers and thunderstorms are expected Friday with gusty winds, brief heavy rainfall, and dangerous lightning. Conditions dry out this weekend with temperatures gradually warming into the middle 70s to lower 80s.

Firefighters Taking Advantage of Decreased Fire Activity
Related Incident: Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: On Wednesday, a second day of minimal fire activity allowed firefighters to complete direct handline from Cow Creek, along the northern edge of the perimeter, to the eastern edge of the fire. A helicopter assisted handcrews with water drops in areas where pockets of residual heat remained along the line. Following an overnight flight, the size of the fire has been updated to 510 acres and remains 0% contained. The increase in acreage is a combination of the small amount of growth over the last 24 hours and better mapping from the overnight infrared flight.
Today, crews will begin extending indirect handline from the northeast corner of the fire perimeter to the east where it will be tied into an existing two-track road. Bulldozers are working to improve the two-track road that extends from the east side of the fire to the south and around to the west where it meets Cow Creek. Firefighters are also clearing vegetation along Cow Creek, on the west side of the fire area, in preparation for potential firing operations in the future, if they are needed and when conditions allow.
Engines assigned to the structure protection group continue to assess and prepare properties along the Bear Creek corridor.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Overnight, the fire area received some rain from thunderstorms, potentially up to .10 of an inch. Today, chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase through the day and into the evening. High temperatures will be in the low 70’s with humidity levels increasing from a low of 40% to 90% overnight. Low temperatures will be in the 50’s.

Sugarloaf Fire Experiences Minimal Growth on Tuesday
Related Incident: Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: This morning, the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team three, under the command of Bill Waln, assumed command of the Sugarloaf Fire.
On Tuesday, fire activity was minimal with fire behavior consisting of backing and creeping; resulting in little growth of the fire. The extensive aerial firefighting efforts on Monday and Tuesday helped keep this fire to the current 396 acres. Two Hotshot crews and one Type 2 Handcrew worked the north side of the fire to establish handline along the fire’s edge.
Today, firefighters will continue constructing line, while additional crews arrive and are added to the incident. Fire personnel will be scouting for opportunities to establish containment lines in an effort to limit impacts to surrounding properties. Crews will also be conducting structural assessments along the Bear Creek drainage today.
A Complex Incident Management Team designation replaces the traditional designation of a Type 1 or Type 2 Incident Management Team. Complex Incident Management Teams are configured to respond to large, complex fires and can expand and reduce staff in all functional areas as necessary to meet the needs of an incident.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Mostly sunny with a slight chance of early afternoon showers and thunderstorm. Storms may bring gusty, erratic winds to the fire area. High temperatures in the low 70’s with humidity levels of 32-34%. Northwest winds will shift to the northeast, 6-14 m.p.h. with gusts to 20. Similar conditions will continue overnight with low temperatures in the 50’s.
Evacuations: An evacuation notice is in place for Bear Creek Road between the Garrett intersection and Friend Park. Pre-evacuation for Friend Park, and Fetterman to Garrett Ranch.
