Evacuations: Due to moderating fire weather and additional resources on the Kalama Fire the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the U.S. Forest Service and Washington Department of Natural Resources, has issued updated evacuation notifications for the “Kalama Fire” in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Southwest of Mount St. Helens (which is not affecting the City of Kalama or residents along the Kalama River Road at this time). The following updates are effective immediately:

Good AQI is likely throughout most of the forecast area today. Yosemite Valley is seeing elevated smoke levels in the early morning most likely due to local campfires. Communities on the east side are seeing impacts from the Mosquito Fire to the north.

Current Situation:
There has been no active fire growth in the last 48 hours. The fire is located in remote and rugged terrain. Due to heavy rainfall yesterday, overnight, and today, fire activity is expected to be very low. Containment has increased to 70% as crews have successfully built fire line breaks around the perimeter. This fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy, ensuring all actions reflect a commitment to incident personnel safety and public safety.
Operational plan for today:
A Type 3 helicopter continues to be assigned to the fire. A Type 4 Incident Commander will assume command of the Washakie Park Fire on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 6am. Future Information about the fire will continue to be posted to the InciWeb Information Page. Further updates will only be published if necessary.
Shoshone and Arapaho Fish and Game Road Closure:
The Shoshone and Arapaho Fish and Game have issued a road closure for the Washakie Park Road and Sage Creek Road to St. Lawrence located within the Wind River Indian Reservation.

Fire Conditions and Weather:
Steady, moderate precipitation is expected over the fire area today. Isolated showers and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty and erratic outflow are forecast. Winds from the west will be 10-15 mph. More precipitation is expected on Friday.

Current Situation:
Data gathered from aerial flights conducted on 9/13/21 mapped the fire perimeter and current acreage at 2465 acres. There has been no active fire growth in the last 24 hours. The fire is located in remote and rugged terrain. Containment has increased to 40% as crews on the west, south, and east flanks have successfully built fire line breaks around the perimeter. This fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy, ensuring all actions reflect a commitment to incident personnel safety and public safety.
Operational plan for today:
All divisions are monitoring the fire area for hotspots, conducting mop-up operations and securing the fire line for containment opportunities. The Type 1 helicopter and the Type 3 helicopters will continue water drops in communication with ground crews to work areas of heat and will transport crews to areas of the fire that are difficult to reach via the road system. As objectives continue to be achieved and with minimal fire behavior, the Wyoming Type3 Incident Management Team will prepare to turn the fire over to a Type 4 organization on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day along with gusty and erratic outflow winds that may gust up to 40 mph. Showers will be hit-or-miss in nature, and are expected to end overnight. Thursday afternoon and evening bring more chances for scattered storms, but no widespread wetting rains are anticipated.

Data gathered from aerial flights conducted overnight mapped the fire perimeter and current acreage at 2515 acres which appears to be a lower number than previously reported but is due to more accurate mapping. The fire is located in remote and rugged terrain. Containment has increased to 30% as crews on the west, south, and east flanks have successfully built fire line breaks around the perimeter. This fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy, ensuring all actions reflect a commitment to incident personnel safety and public safety.
Operational plan for today:
Crews will continue to monitor fire area for hot spots. All divisions will work direct on the fire line, conducting mop-up operations and securing the fire line for containment opportunities. The Wyoming UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) mod, equipped with an IR camera will conduct flights to give firefighters an aerial view of both the fire line and any spot fires that may be outside of the main fire perimeter. The Type 1 helicopter and the two Type 3 helicopters will continue water drops in communication with ground crews to work areas of heat.

Mid to high level clouds will increase over the fire area during the morning and into the late afternoon. There is a chance of showers and increased winds, possibly gusty and erratic, ahead of thunderstorms this afternoon and ending by midnight. Additional showers and winds will be possible Wednesday morning. Chances for wetting rains will be around 70% Wednesday afternoon.

Current Situation:
GPS data from ground crews working the fire line allowed for more accurate mapping, adjusting the total acres from yesterday’s aerial mapping down to 2488 acres. The fire is located in remote and rugged terrain. Current containment of the fire is at 15% as a result of direct line construction and fire line assessment from ground crews securing the fire line edge. This fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy, ensuring all actions reflect a commitment to incident personnel safety and public safety.
Operational plan for today:
Crews will continue to assess structure protection in Washakie Park and the St Lawrence Ranger Station. Direct line construction will continue in all divisions as well as indirect containment lines on portions of the fire in anticipation of any increased fire behavior from the anticipated weather pattern moving into the fire area on Tuesday afternoon. Work will continue with the Wyoming UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) mod, equipped with an IR camera. Flight imagery will be used to located and address any spot fires that may be outside of the main fire perimeter. The Type 1 helicopter and the two Type 3 helicopters will continue water drops in communication with ground crews to work areas of heat.

High pressure will continue to bring dry and warm weather through Monday night. Wind will remain mainly light, and terrain driven through Monday night. Increasing moisture moving in from the south will increase the chance of showers Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday.
