Lakeview, OR – Evacuations. Evacuation levels for the Bootleg Fire are being changed in the Summer Lake area because of predicted weather forecasts, change in drying fuels and observed fire behavior.

Effective immediately: Level 3 – GO NOW! A Level 3 evacuation remains in place for all areas inside the Bootleg Fire perimeter. The Level 3 extends to areas immediately adjacent to the fire line in all directions, and also includes Yamsay Mountain, Thompson Reservoir, and the Sycan Marsh to the top of Winter Rim.
Level 2 – Be Set A Level 2 evacuation is in place adjacent to the Level 3 evacuation area in all directions, and encompasses Highway 31 from milepost 73 south to Monument Rock.
Level 1 – Be Ready A Level 1 Evacuation is in place adjacent to the Level 2 evacuation area in all directions. Because of predicted weather forecasts, and the recommendation of the Incident Management Team, the Summer Lake area along Highway 31, from Mile Post 73, north to Picture Rock Pass will be placed at a Level 1 Evacuation. This will include the Ana Subdivision east of Highway 31.

While containment increases on the Bootleg Fire, Lake County must remain vigilant to hazards presented by the fire. The fire is still actively burning in many areas and firefighters and equipment are traveling and accessing the fire from Lake County roads and highways. Further, the Fremont-Winema Forest remains closed; see updated closure orders on the Fremont-Winema website under ‘Alerts and Notices’.
Fire Information. Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches are in effect in parts of Lake County over the next several days. This means current fires may become more active and new fire starts may occur.

Bootleg Fire Emergency Closure still in place for firefighter and public safety

LAKEVIEW, Ore. – Area residents and visitors are reminded that there is an emergency closure order for the Bootleg Fire on the Fremont-Winema National Forest for both public and firefighter safety and travel or entry into the area is prohibited.

To provide space for wildfire suppression activities to happen safely, preserve access to firefighter escape routes if needed and to help prevent vehicle accidents, it is important to stay out of the area.

“Whether it is curiosity or getting ready for hunting season, we understand our area residents and visitors want to get back into the Forest,” said Forest Supervisor Barry Imler.  “We also understand and share the frustration of our communities on the east side of the Forest to not have access to loved local recreation sites during the late summer and fall for the second season in a row due to wildfire.”

The Bootleg Fire has created serious safety hazards within the closure area, some of which will be ongoing until winter snows. 

The fire has burned over cattleguards, bridges and roads, resulting in damage.  As conditions allow, Forest Service engineers will be inspecting these structures and roads to determine the extent of the damage and if there is a need to repair or replace them.  Fire equipment has also accelerated damage to numerous Forest roads, making them unsafe for travel until repair and restoration activities are completed.

Among the upcoming priorities as the fire is contained and controlled is the removal of hazard trees along roads and near recreation areas to improve safety.

“We appreciate the support and cooperation of our local communities, residents, and visitors as wildland firefighting resources work on the Bootleg Fire,” Imler said.  “There is still a lot of work to be done after the fire is contained and shifts back to the local units.  Your patience, understanding and continued cooperation during that work will help us restore and care for the resources affected by the Bootleg Fire.”

The closure area is on National Forest System lands south of Silver Lake Road between U.S. Highway 97 and Oregon State Highway 31; west of Oregon State Highway 31 and U.S. Highway 395; north of Oregon State Highway 140 between U.S. Highway 395 and Sprague River Road; northeast of Sprague River Road between State Highway 140 and U.S. Highway 97; and east of U.S. Highway 97 between Chiloquin and Silver Lake Road.

All roads, recreation sites and facilities remain closed within the closure area.

The order is formally referenced as Closure Order Number 06-02-21-07.  Violations of the prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.

(Klamath Falls, OR) – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for this afternoon and evening. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Wednesday. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. Specifically, these conditions include continued warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Combined, they promote the rapid spread of wildfire and extreme fire behavior that could become life threatening 

Out of an abundance of caution and at the recommendation of the Alaska Incident Management Team, Lake County expanded the Level 1 (Get Ready) evacuation boundary to include the area north of Summer Lake. The expanded area extends from Mile Post 73 on Highway 31 north to Picture Rock Pass and east of the highway to include the Ana Subdivision. A Level 2 (Be Set) evacuation remains in place from milepost 73 on Highway 31 south to Monument Rock. A Level 3 (GO NOW!) evacuation remains in place for all areas within and adjacent to the Bootleg Fire perimeter, including Yamsay Mountain, Thompson Reservoir, and the Sycan Marsh to the top of Winter Rim.  

The Bootleg Fire containment continues to advance as firefighting crews mop up, improve fire line, and strengthen contingency lines. Crews are working tirelessly to ensure we are as prepared as we can be for the extreme fire weather forecast for the next couple days. 

Just as firefighters have been preparing for the weather conditions, you should, too. Fire starts are not just from escaped embers and lightning but can also come from a trailer chain dragged on pavement, a hot catalytic converter in contact with dry grasses, or shooting firearms. “Any accidental or negligent release of sparks or heat can result in a fire that quickly gets out of control,” says Kristian Knutson, Fire Prevention Officer in Palmer, Alaska, and incident Public Information Officer. “Be sure to remove combustibles from around the outside of your home, such as firewood, fuel tanks, and gas grills. Keep shrubs and tree limbs away from your house and off the ground.” At this time of year, one less spark could mean one less wildfire.

Smoke:  A new complex of fires in Northern California sparked by thunderstorms started to put out a lot of smoke in the afternoon yesterday. Winds will likely carry that smoke into Oregon. Critical fire weather conditions later today could also increase fire behavior, putting more smoke into the air. How To Support the Firefighters on the Bootleg Fire

We greatly appreciate the support and generosity of the community! Our team’s focus is on fire suppression and our number one priority is firefighter and public safety. Our wildland fire crews are well equipped and cared for, we provide them with all the food and supplies they need.

We are unable to accept any donations at fire camps.

For those asking how they can help support our efforts, here are a few ideas:

1. Keep firefighters safe by adhering to road and area closures and by creating defensible space around your home. Learn how to create defensible space at http://firewise.org.
2. Post "Thank You" banners or signs in the community and on social media. This is a great morale booster for firefighters after a long shift and many of our crews are working throughout the night when, under these extremely hot and dry conditions, it is actually safer!
3. Though we cannot accept donations of food, beverages or clothing, we can accept pre-stamped post cards for firefighters to send home to spouses or children and this small gesture has wide reaching effects.
4. Volunteer for or donate to your LOCAL fire departments. Call first to find out what they need.
5. If you are looking for ways to assist communities affected by the fire, look to local disaster response organizations, such as American Red Cross.
6. And finally, consider a donation to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. This non-profit group provides immediate support to the families of injured or deceased firefighters and provides the lifeline that many families need.

Bootleg Fire Update, August 4, 2021

(Klamath Falls, OR) – A Red Flag Warning and a Fire Weather Watch are in effect this afternoon and evening for the second day in a row. These conditions promote the rapid spread of wildfire and extreme fire behavior, but so far the Bootleg fire line is holding. Helicopters kept dropping water on the active fire yesterday to cool it so crews could continue to work. 

Southwesterly winds yesterday brought smoke to the Bootleg Fire area from fires burning in northern California. The smoke was helpful in that it created overcast skies that allowed less solar radiation to the active fire and kept temperatures cooler. 

Overcast skies, from clouds or smoke, also dampen updraft winds that fuel active fires. Think of a chimney on a wood stove. If the flue is completely open, the heat from the fireplace is drawn upward and the updraft feeds oxygen to the fire. If the flue is somewhat closed, the updraft is lessened, and more heat stays in the wood stove and the fire burns more slowly. 

With fires burning across the West, more people are impacted by smoke. For most people, smoke is a nuisance. But some people are more sensitive to smoke and it can be dangerous for them. At some levels, smoke can be dangerous to everyone. The best way to mitigate the impacts is to limit your time outside, and when you are outside, avoid strenuous activity so less smoke is drawn into your lungs. If you are concerned about the amount of smoke, or if you or someone at home is especially sensitive, you can get sensors to alert you to unhealthy levels.  

If you anticipate heavy smoke, there are things you can do to minimize smoke in your home. “Like anything you are concerned about, the best thing you can do is to get ready ahead of time,” says Air Quality Advisor Margaret Key. “There are simple things you can do to get smoke ready.” Some effective measures include closing up rooms in your home and putting towels around the windows to keep smoke out. Box fans covered with a HEPA filter forces air through and filters out smoke. See links below for smoke maps and tips for being smoke ready.

Evacuations:  Lake County expanded the Level 1 (Get Ready) evacuation boundary to include the area north of Summer Lake. The expanded area extends from Mile Post 73 on Highway 31 north to Picture Rock Pass and east of the highway to include the Ana Subdivision. A Level 2 (Be Set) evacuation remains in place from milepost 73 on Highway 31 south to Monument Rock. A Level 3 (GO NOW!) evacuation remains in place for all areas within and adjacent to the Bootleg Fire perimeter, including Yamsay Mountain, Thompson Reservoir, and the Sycan Marsh to the top of Winter Rim. The best way to view the evacuation designation boundaries and details is on the interactive map available at tinyurl.com/bootlegevac
