Ridgetop winds picked up yesterday afternoon along the northern end of the fire with sustain windspeeds of 20 mph. Fire crews are patrolling the river to assess needs for structure protection for private property, historic structures, and infrastructure. There has been limited fire movement to the east as it remains in the Mallard Creek drainage.
Another weather front will be coming in today bringing in possible thunderstorms across the fire area. Strong winds have the potential to impact fire activity on both the Dixie and Jumbo fires.

Dixie and Jumbo Fires Update August 2 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
DIXIE FIRE:
The most active portion of the fire continues to be along Blowout Ridge on the western side of the fire. The northwest portion of the fire continues to burn steadily, holding a significant amount of heat. The fire will likely continue to smolder in the Red Creek drainage in the southern portion of the fire, creep up Noble Ridge in the east, and move slowly down canyon into Jersey Creek to the south.
Crews will continue to monitor the fire's progression down river near Jersey Creek. Give the recent precipitation, crews will implement direct (closer to the fire's edge) containment actions in the Comstock and Dixie areas. To the northwest, crews will assess and determine opportunities to contain the recent push across Road 1190. Crews will continue to patrol Road 421 and contain areas of heat in the Noble Creek area.
JUMBO FIRE:
The Jumbo fire is burning well within the wilderness and is moving slowly north on the western flank, as well as south towards the Salmon River. Though the fire remains active (creeping and smoldering), it has not moved nor increased in acreage. Fire managers will assess the fire's status and progression, evaluating and planning for further actions.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
Wetting rain yesterday afternoon and evening dampened fire behavior. Heavy fuels will continue to smolder, especially in sheltered areas under the heavy canopy. The fire received over an inch of rain on the northern flank, with lesser amounts elsewhere on the fire. Today's forecast calls for afternoon NW winds gusting up to 16 mph, temperatures in the 80s, and zero chance of precipitation. Relative humidity will remain around 30%. Weather is predicted to change quickly, with a drying ridge approaching the area.
Dixie and Jumbo Fires Update August 3 2021

DIXIE FIRE:
Crews completed direct (closer to the fire's edge) containment actions in the Comstock and Dixie areas. Crews will scout for additional opportunities for fuel breaks in the area. If river conditions allow, crews will boat up the Salmon River to check the fire's status and increase containment along the southern perimeter. To the northwest, crews and heavy equipment continue to contain the recent push across Road 1190. Crews will continue to patrol Road 421 and contain areas of residual heat in the Noble Creek area.
JUMBO FIRE:
Fire personnel arrived to the Jumbo Fire area last night and will begin assessing the fire's status and progression today, evaluating and planning for further actions. The fire is burning well within the wilderness and has been slowly creeping and smoldering north on the western flank, as well as south towards the Salmon River. Fire behavior analysts do not expect any movement or growth today.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
Overnight relative humidity recovery ranged from 65 to 100% across the fire area. The thin layer of fog in the low-lying areas is expected to lift before noon. Temperatures are expected to be in the high 80s to low 90s with relative humidity in the high teens to low 20s. There is a slight possibility of rain tomorrow evening into Thursday, with increased cloud cover likely, as a weather disturbance moves through the area.
There is little evidence of heat in the lighter fuels; these "flashy" fuels are likely to dry out quickly. Weak smoke production continues to highlight areas of concentrated heat in the heavier smoldering fuels, especially where sheltered under the thick canopy. Minimal fire behavior is expected through the end of the week, although drier conditions are expected today. The effects of recent precipitation are expected to last a few days.
Dixie and Jumbo Fires Update August 4 2021
Related Incident:

DIXIE FIRE:
Crews continue to construct and improve fireline in the Comstock and Dixie areas. To the south of the fire, crews boated the Salmon River and scouted fire activity. They confirmed the fire has not crossed the river, with little fire movement along the southern perimeter. To the northwest, crews continue to monitor and contain the recent fire push across Road 1190 and "gridded the green" (checking unburned areas outside the fire's perimeter for embers and isolated heat). Crews will continue to patrol Road 421, repair and replace culverts burned by the fire, and contain areas of residual heat in the Noble/Mallard Creek area. Helicopters will assist in moving supplies and equipment to fire crews working near Mackay Bar.
JUMBO FIRE:
Personnel are on site at the Jumbo Fire and are continuing to monitor the fire's status and progression. The fire is burning well within the wilderness and has been slowly creeping and smoldering, with some areas of heat and smoke in the interior. Fire behavior analysts do not expect any significant movement today.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
Temperatures are expected to be in the high 80s, with relative humidity in the high teens to low 20s. Thunderstorms could pass through the area on Thursday, with potential for 25 mile per hour wind gusts from the southwest. A cooling pattern, with some potential for additional precipitation and isolated lightning strikes, may follow later in the week.
Despite the drier conditions, the effects of recent precipitation have continued to result in minimal fire behavior. The northeast corner of the fire near Noble Creek received the smallest amount of rain and is currently the most active area of the fire. Fuel moisture in the surrounding area is expected to slow fire movement and limit the potential for spotting. The active burn window is predicted to be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Needle drop could result in the potential for reburn; firefighters will watch these areas.

DIXIE FIRE:
Crews along the Salmon River further scouted for fire activity upriver. The crews, along with helicopters from the Dixie helibase, assisted several smokejumpers with a new start south of the Jumbo Fire, east of the Crooked Creek drainage (within the 2007 Rattlesnake fire footprint). On the northwest section of the Dixie fire, crews continue to monitor and contain the recent fire push across Road 1190, checking unburned areas outside the fire's perimeter for isolated heat. Crews will "plumb" the area with water-handling equipment and address heat in the heavy canopy. Crews will continue to patrol Road 421, repair and replace culverts burned by the fire, and contain areas of residual heat in the Noble/Mallard Creek area.
JUMBO FIRE:
Personnel are on site at the Jumbo Fire and are continuing to monitor the fire's status and progression, as well as water-handling equipment near area structures. The fire is burning within the wilderness and has been slowly creeping and smoldering, with some areas of heat and smoke in the interior. The area of most concern, given today's predicted winds, is the southern perimeter.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
There is a RED FLAG WARNING in effect from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for dry thunderstorms and gusty, erratic outflow winds. Temperatures are expected to be in the 80s, with relative humidity in the 25-30% range and ridgetop winds at 25 mph. Outflow winds associated with passing thunderstorms could gust to 50 mph. A cooling pattern is forecast for the next couple of days, resulting in more relaxed fire behavior conditions.
