GLIDE, Ore. – With critical anchor points in place, a new swing shift began strategic ignitions Thursday night around the Jack Fire and Rough Patch Complex.

“We started burn operations today and our goal is to continue to bring those around to reinforce indirect lines and secure containment lines in key locations,” said John Spencer, operations section chief for Northwest 13 Incident Management Team.

Ground resources continued battling spot fires and holdover ignitions around both fire footprints, as well as building, holding and patrolling containment lines.

Military support personnel have joined the firefighting efforts, with three wildland firefighting crews from the Oregon Army and Air Force National Guard deployed to the incident.

WEATHER:  Medford National Weather Service is forecasting a Red Flag Warning for the region today. Highs are expected to peak around 100° again today, with humidities as low as 10 percent. Temperatures will drop into the 90s for the weekend, reducing the potential for extreme fire behavior.

SAFETY: Heavy smoke can significantly reduce visibility during daylight hours. Motorists are encouraged to turn on their headlights and slow down when traveling around forested areas and keep an eye out for engines, heavy equipment and firefighters on foot.

CLOSURES:  Thursday, the Umpqua National Forest announced a forthcoming closure order that will encompass South Umpqua Falls to ensure safe access and egress for fire crews and equipment responding to the Jack Fire, Rough Patch Complex, and Devil's Knob Complex. Existing closures are in place for Steamboat Campground, Steamboat Falls Campground, Canton Creek Campground, Musick Guard Station and Mineral Campground.

Rough Patch Complex/Jack Fire update for Saturday, Aug. 14

GLIDE, Ore. – Fire crews made headway bolstering the containment lines on the Chaos Fire, while keeping it from moving farther west or south.  Work will continue today on mopping up along containment lines, conducting direct attack where feasible, and indirect attack where appropriate based on weather, fuels, and topography. Firefighter and the public safety are always a priority during wildland fire fighting operations.

Closures:  The Umpqua and Willamette National Forests have updated existing closure orders to encompass the Rough Patch, Jack, Archie Creek and Devil's Knob Fire Areas. This includes Canton Creek Campground, Musick Guard Station and Cover Campground.   

Roseburg District Bureau of Land Management has expanded its closure area to include the Scaredman Recreation Site. Francis Creek Road from the junction with Canton Creek Road north to the district boundary has been closed since Aug. 5.  

Highway 138 between Roseburg and Diamond Lake and Crater Lake remains open.  Slow down and be alert while passing through the fire area.

Jack Fire:  The Jack Fire does have containment lines that are holding on the west and north flanks of the fires.  Fire crews are patrolling these flanks and taking action to hold the lines as necessary.  The southwest and south flanks of the fire is seeing active fire behavior – tactics on these flanks include direct dozer line, the construction of alternate line using the road system and building and reinforcing contingency lines along the 27 and 2715 roads. 

Buckhead and Near Minky Fires:  These fires lay south of the Jack fire and have similar active fire behavior on the west flanks.  The contingency line being constructed for the Jack fire will extend to the south and act as the primary holding line to prevent these fires from moving to the west.  On the south and east flanks of these fire, heavy equipment is working to build fire line to hold and prevent fire from escaping to the south and east. 

WEATHER:  Forecasted weather will slowly trend from hot, dry, and smokey to seasonal averages with possible clearing, resulting in less aggressive fire behavior by Wednesday.

Weather:  Weather conditions are trending to more seasonal like conditions with better overnight Rh recoveries.  North-northwest winds of 8 to 12 mph with gusts 17 to 22 mph are likely to occur over slopes and ridges which will increase fire activity.

Weather:  Saturday night brough another night of good RH recovery ranging from 70%-90%.  Minimum RH for Sunday will be in the 20 percent range.  Northwest winds of 4 to 9 mph with gusts to 18 mph are likely to occur over slopes and ridges which will increase fire activity.
