Containment percentage increase as dry and breezy conditions return to area
Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News 08/05/2022
Current Situation:
Cloudy conditions suppressed fire activity on Wednesday keeping fire behavior minimal. Despite the cloud cover, the fire area received no precipitation. Today’s weather brings sunny conditions with dry, warm and breezy winds. Fire activity is predicted to be minimal with creeping and smoldering of unburned pockets of fuel within the current fire perimeter. The Sugarloaf Fire is 839 acres and 23% contained.
On the west side of the fire in Division Zulu, crews are mopping up hot spots and patrolling the fire line along Cow Creek. Interior pockets of unburned fuel continue to smolder within the fire perimeter which will continue to produce some visible smoke. Mopping up is extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines to eliminate the potential for fire spread.
On the east side of the fire in Division Alpha, a small number of hot spots remain in the southern part of the fire. Hotshot crews continue to patrol and utilize an infra-red drone to locate those hot spots and take suppression action when they can safely access those hot spots.
The Structure Division is supporting the other Divisions and completing back haul of materials from indirect fire lines and structure protection.
Weather & Fuel Conditions:
Over the next two days higher temperatures and drying conditions return to the area. Interior pockets of unburned fuels within the fire perimeter will continue to smolder with the possibility of isolated single tree torching. A summer cold front will enter the area bringing widespread showers and thunderstorms over the weekend.
