Big Iron Fire Daily Update

July 27, 2023

8:00 am

Size: 150 acres

Containment: 75%

Date Started: July 24, 2023

Cause: Unknown

State resources from Texas A&M Forest (TAMFS) and Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) returned to the Big Iron Fire early this morning to continue to improve constructed containment lines, patrol, and mop-up. The fire did not experience any growth during yesterday's shift.

Yesterday, a 10-person handcrew module joined resources on the fireline to assist with mop up, a process of extinguishing all burning material near containment lines, focusing efforts in the drainage on the north side where the fire naturally held up on the first day. Efforts will continue to focus on this northern edge, where access remains difficult due to steep terrain.

Hot and dry weather is expected today with moderate south winds around 10 mph becoming 10 to 15 with gusts over 20 mph in the
evening. Minimum humidity should drop to around 24 percent with morning recovery around 80 percent Friday morning. With dry air in place, heat Index values will not deviate much from the temperature through Friday. Similar weather is expected Saturday, but even hotter weather may arrive Sunday into early next week.
