Update - Brice Creek, Dinner, and Grizzly Fires - September 13, 2023

Brice Creek Fire, Grizzly Fire, Dinner Fire
Publication Type: News 09/14/2023

Northwest Team 12 transitioned management to Northwest Team 6 at 8pm last night. Northwest Team 6 will carry forward the work done by Team 12 and continue with strategic management of the five fires in the area. In addition to the three fires listed in this update NW Team 6 is managing the Chilcoot and Ridge Fires further south on the Umpqua National Forest.

Brice Creek Fire: Size: 588 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 50%

Over the next few shifts fire personnel will be focusing on small-scale firing operations, burning off any remaining green inlands.  On the largest of these islands, on the southeast flank of the fire, fire personnel are constructing a containment handline.  This handline is south of Forest Service Road (FSR) 709 and north of containment feature FSR 22.  Firefighters will be patrolling all flanks of the fire, extinguishing hot spots and extending mop up to the fire’s interior where threats to the line exist.  Unmanned Aerial Resources (UAS/drones) will be assisting mop up efforts by flying the fire with infrared detection.  Water dropping helicopters will be available to assist firefighters if needed.

Dinner Fire: Size:  304 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 95%

Dinner Fire operations today will consist of patrolling.  Firefighters will drive or walk the entire perimeter of the fire.  Any hot spots, danger trees, or other hazards will be mitigated.

Grizzly Fire: Size:  111 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 0%

Yesterday, a heavy helicopter did numerous water drops on the south flank of the fire.  Fire activity hasn’t increased, but fire management wants to be proactive with the warmer temperatures expected later in the week.  Today, two water scoopers will be wetting fuels on the southern of the Grizzly Fire with water.  A scooper is a fixed wing aircraft that skims a lake surface and intakes water. There will increased aircraft outside the fire area today for skimming sites. The Wildland Fire Module that is on scene will be helping coordinate these water drops.

Weather:  Temperatures will range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s with minimum relative humidity in the range of 30-40%.  Valley and slope winds will be northeast/north in aligned drainages 4 to 8 mph otherwise variable to north 1 to 5 mph.  Ridgetop winds northeast/north 7 to 12 mph gusts 15-18 mph.

Evacuations:  Lane County issued a Level 2 Evacuation (Be Set) for all private lands and mining claims in the Bohemia areas within the Cottage Grove Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.

Safety and Closures: Please remember to stay out the fire area this includes flying any unstaffed aircraft, if you fly we cant. There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety.  There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire area.
