Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Daily Update July 1, 2022

Highlights: A Community Meeting will be hosted on Tuesday, July 5 at 6 p.m. will be livestreamed on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CalfCanyonHermitsPeak. The Camino Real Ranger District on the Carson National Forest and Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest remain closed as firefighters continue to work on suppression repair across the entire fire area.

North Zone (SWIMT3): Due to drying conditions on roadways, firefighters were able to remove heavy equipment from the fire area that are no longer needed. Road repair operations include creating inverted rolling dips to prevent soil erosion. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) is being used for reconnaissance missions to view the uncontained western fire perimeter that is unsafe to access by ground. The flight confirmed that there has not been any new fire growth in this area. Suppression repair operations, such as chipping and fixing fences are occurring in Mora, Holman, Guadalupita, Chacon, along the NM Highway 518 and 434 corridors, and in other areas as well. Firefighters will continue to assist with any new fire starts in the area of the fire.

South Zone (GBIMT7): Fire managers flew the fire today observing minimal heat and visible smoke. Plans are in place if fire activity increases. Handline repair continues on the west side of the fire with the majority of the work in the Geronimo area. This work will move into the higher elevations as weather conditions allow. Heavy equipment is continuing to repair dozer line on the southern end of the fire. Resources continue to scout areas across the fire and will begin repair work when the area is safe to access.

Weather: Monsoonal moisture will continue to increase over northern New Mexico over the next few days. This will result in increasing potential for showers and thunderstorms which will continue off and on into early next week.

Overall, the threat for widespread flooding and debris flows is low but remains more likely in the event a strong storm moves over high intensity burn scar areas.
