Yesterday’s Operations: Firefighters strengthened and mopped up along existing containment lines. In the early afternoon, fire activity picked up due to warm temperature, low relative humidity and moderate winds. This produced a lot of smoke which was visible for miles. The burning was within containment lines and the fire didn’t directly challenge lines but some embers caused spot fires. Spot fires were readily suppressed by firefighters on scene. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) were utilized to patrol outside containment lines and assisted in finding spots.
Today’s Operations: Firefighters main priority will be searching for spot fires from yesterday’s fire activity and then suppressing those outside of containment lines. The UASs will again be used to find spot fires. (Fire managers requested an aircraft with infrared capabilities to fly over the fire Monday evening to detect and map out heat signatures but the aircraft was unable to fly due to cloud cover.)
Strategy: The fire is currently being managed under a confine/contain strategy due to fuel conditions, geographic location and values at risk. The objective is to contain fire in the Middle Springs drainage, utilizing fuel type changes, natural breaks and burnout operations.
Weather: Today will be mostly cloudy, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temperatures between 68 and 73 and humidity above 25%. Winds from the South, 5-7 mph in the morning becoming west-southwest 12-16 mph in the afternoon. Safety of firefighters and the public are the highest priorities for incident management.
