A few new starts from this storm have been reported to the Bonners Ferry Ranger District and crews continue to quickly respond and prioritize resources based on values at risk. The most notable new start is the Russell Mountain fire, which was detected yesterday in the Ball Creek drainage. The fire is burning above the Ball Creek Road on a south aspect and is terrain driven. A crew responded to the fire yesterday and estimated the size to be 7 acres burning in a mixed conifer stand with numerous snags. Today, a reconnaissance flight checked the status of existing fires and confirmed 2 new starts on Black Mountain. The Eneas Peak fire received the most precipitation through the night and both Eneas Peak and Trout fires showed minimal growth since yesterday. Due to the incoming weather system, resources were ordered to assist the District with initial attack. Resources include a Type 1 hand crew and a Type 1 helicopter. Today, the Type 1 hand crew has been assigned to suppress the two new small fires in the Black Mountain area. These lightning-caused fires are both less than an acre in size.
